You asked a question and I stupidly engaged knowing full well what you’re response would be like . Wasn’t a brag or a look how tough I am comment. You’ve never had to prove yourself or really stand up for or to anything because it was all handed to you. You’re soft as fuck with some shitty positions that you can only defend with your guns. Buh-bye.
Obviously there's some overlap but which of these statements do you think more accurately describes human behavior?
- We are individuals who independently choose and direct our own desires.
- We are social creatures who are influenced by others in forming our political positions, aesthetic tastes, career ambitions, consumer habits, etc.
If you answer #1, would you say the same thing about status-obsessed teenagers?
I’m pretty sure that posting pictures of your baby Yoda decorated magazine makes you just as douchie

I’m an asshole on the internet, probably in real life too, however, I will go out of my way to treat people decently and with compassion in my day to day interactions and don’t find it difficult to behave like a decent human being

We’ll agree to disagree on that

Regardless of what type of magazines I like to buy, I seriously doubt any of you would have an issue with me in real life. Regardless of what we might think, this type of forum removes a level of decorum that is present in real life. I also think thats why places like this offer a level of cathartic release from normal, every day interactions.

I don't believe in the (behavioral) distinctions between online and irl.
So my theory is:
"Things spiral out control when one group or one person hierarchically tries to dominate another into submission. In response the behavior is imitated and returned ‘with interest’ i.e., with greater force."
And your theory is:
"Only that culturally, as evinced here in this thread and across virtually all TGNarr discussions as well as the broader American mediascape, disrespect, personal attacks and out and out insane rants are widely manifest. All that shit just leads to more rage and rage is where I think a lot of the dysfunction of mass shooting roots."
That's the sameness I'm talking about. We're both describing how things spiral out control. You're "trying to be nice" but there's a conflict. The conflict isn't because we have a big substantive disagreement. Disrespect and dominance are synonymous in this context. It's because you "try to listen, understand and show respect" but even so my position is somehow disrespectful.
If I don't reciprocate by acknowledging your theory is clearly superior then "yeah, fuck it, I write them off." That's the paradox of demanding distinct recognition, that small differences cause conflict because of hypersensitivity to details of differentiation.
So just to be clear. I'm convinced that the negative impacts of all these guns being so easily obtained by non felon US citizens pretty greatly outweighs the benefits if us having such easy access to guns, especially semi auto high body count designed systems. A big part of that is the unintentional arming of our kids and the true criminals due to not property securing them..
Even without that, the damage done when people lose their minds in workplace or domestic situations is not worth the benefit of me feeling a little more secure having weapons available to feel safe and to have fun with.
Still, I'm not going to give mine up unless we all give all of them up together.
Is there anyone who really believes the costs of these relatively low probability but high visibility tragedies added in with the road rage, workplace, and domestic murders are really worth the benefits of personally feeling safer driving to Walmart or sitting at home?
It's irrational but I admit to being at least a part of the problem. This is why we need representation making decisions for us we'd not make personally without some threat of legal consequences for not complying with what's best for the community versus what we'd prefer personally.
No, I’m an asshole in real life but if you meet me I’ll be courteous and generous to most anyone.

Your partitioning of options is overly simplistic. Some dominance is logical, that is, better reasoned, at least for a while until some polemic becomes paradigm.
Are you actually claiming I find your positioning disrespectful? Isn't that just a little presumptive? Maybe you misunderstood.

I generally don't find this exchange disrespectful, but I don't accept it either.
I don't think you understand what I mean when I write something or someone off. It means I don't bother with them, either because I'm tired, or tired of them or find their conduct childish.
Again, it's extending sufficient respect, at least for a while, to listen to try and understand differences, not necessarily eradicate them, that I think American culture is losing.
