East coast berms are a Biatch to build by hand. Our soil is rock, so building a high berm is brutal. Essentially your building a rock wall and throwing what little soil you have on the face. So freaking time consuming for 2 seconds of your ride, but makes it 100% more enjoyable.
And every berm is different based on the slope and terrain you're working with, so some will naturally be better flow and drainage than others when hand built with no culverts or whatever brought on site

Took the advice and steepened up the face as much as possible. This section is on private land, so we need to keep things pretty small and not make the landscape look super disturbed (no culverts, etc). Thankfully this spot is always pretty dry (MANY more drainage issues elsewhere we're working through). Noticed my front tire was basically on the top edge, added more height to it and steepened as much as the dirt would allow. Thankfully Jackstraw, we have actual dirt up here in Portland! At least in parts, and almost entirely clay (for better or worse).

I noticed when people were coming into it, they were taking the old line tight to the tree on riders' left. So pointed almost straight into the middle of the berm. Considering putting a rock or something on the inside to discourage that line... thoughts? Extended the berm earlier uphill, and bt that and steepening it up, if you take the wide line, and esp. if you tap a little back brake and let the rear slide :) , you get pointed very quickly right to the exit.
Will likely be back for future fixes, but steepening it up really helped. Thanks for the tip!
And YES, I agree, seems a consistent habit of trailbuilders to not build enough support late in the turn. Def trying to keep that in mind as I slowly figure out these turns.
Pictures dont do anything justice, and i dont know the speed coming into it so maybe the berm is working great. But, to me, that thing looks too small right now, and its obviously not compacted so its gonna shrink a lot. I would suggest digging out 3-4' inside of teh berm to get the dirt and stacking that shit up much bigger. It will all compact down A LOT over the winter.Quote:

I've posted this one. Took a long time to build, but it's holding up. It is at the bottom, so drainage was/is a concern. I ended up digging a trench at the low spot and filling with large rock/boulders and filling on top of it. And the inside is the low spot, so hopefully pooling would happen there and your tires would be on dry soil.

Yeah, definitely. And just to clarify it's not mine nor my kids. It's the company he works for, SC Mtn Trail Stewardship. Ibis and SC bikes treat them well for obvious reasons.
I’ve started volunteering with a group of people building and maintaining a nice little system in NorCal now that I’ve moved down here. Sunday we replaced four of these janky bridges built on small and rotting doug fir logs with donated redwood from the local mill. I’m still super sore and tired from carrying boards and beams up and down the trail.

Started on a few other spots but realized I was about to rip open Pandora’s box, that’ll wait for another day.
Saying about never being done dirt jumps/pump track is totally true. Was about to start building a hip jump into the berm from the right side/left hip, but that too will have to wait, maybe spring project.
My local trails are in need of some chainsaw work as well.

yeah been a good couple of weekends for that! worked on clearing some deep puddles and drainage in Squamish last Saturday, then Sunday took Dakota to her (nick)namesake (B.S.) in Whistler and spent a few hours clean up on it, since hadn't done much on it in a couple years. yesterday went and raked almost all of High Side as it had also been a couple years too, so plenty of slippery needle muck and drainage clean out.Quote:

First time doing some dirt work here in SC and it's just delightful [emoji16] There's no freakin' rocks! The soil is very interesting. It's powdery but sets up like cement.
