14/?? The OFFICIAL Tahoe Thread

Alpine skied way better than I expected on Tuesday. I just got back from instructing at Mammoth for the past two weeks, and it's was way better here. Mammoth was a wind sculpted, rock hard slide for life up top, and pumice strewn down low. It was impossible not to hit something every run (groomed or off piste).

Alpine was a totally different story. Skied four hours, didn't hit anything. The corn cycle was in effect on Lake view. Nice change to ski snow I couldn't hear. I'm back out tomorrow, with renewed stoke. Yes, we need snow. But it could be worse, as evidenced by my trashed skis from two weeks in Mammoth.

Keep the faith, it will happen.

I will be in Berkeley next week for a few days for non-skiing related reasons. If I wanted to ski for a day (maybe spend one night if necessary, don't care if resort or touring) where would I best do this and could I get there without a car? I visited Berkeley once when I was 5 and have no idea how these things work there. Any pointers would be appreciated.

edit to add: could bring boots but will not drag skis along so would have to rent. guessing this wouldn't be a huge problem?

Snowpals on yahoo forums is the quick way to find a ride up and back. There has been recent backlash on high prices and I expect costs to be reasonable for a while. Also a few posting on Shredshare and Craigslist sometimes has rides in the ride share section. When are you looking to go? I might get up there Friday or Saturday.

Renting gear at resort is no problem, and I know that Kirkwood resort actually has gear compatible with AT boots. Other resorts may not have gear compatible with AT boots, so you need to call around.

In Tahoe, best resort coverage right now is at Sugar Bowl (closest to Berkeley), Alpine Meadows, and Kirkwood (highest elevation).

Let me know when you are planning to ski, and I can point you in the right direction for touring. Not much chance of bagging any first descents on this trip ;)

Thanks guys! I arrive in B next thursday (15th) and leave the following wednesday. might find time to ski monday or tuesday but really not sure yet. Just trying to figure out what would be possible with limited time. Not looking to bag first descents, just check out new mountains :)

Clouds yesterday kept anything in the E bowl from softening (we could see the shine). The warming trend made the shaded N-aspects snow sticky unfortunately, as stuff near and below treeline was not wind affected and otherwise would have skied great on a supportable base.

Thanks much for the timely report. Due to time constraints, opted for dogshit lake peak. Didn't smell like roses, but south facing was soft and fun, then n-facing was crusty and variable. You might have done well to hit the stuff with the mirror shine: it was glazed pow and skied pretty nicely.

They also have a nice cheese selection (including Mt Tam at a substantial discount off what I pay in the Bay) at the Tahoe City store, located conveniently a block from Tahoe House. One stop shopping.

To add to good advice that others have shared, bumming rides is probably the one time when going over the weekend is going to be easier. And crowds shouldn't be too bad, judging from this past weekend and the lack of new snow.

Well Tahoe isn't the only place that has had upside down snow lately. Headed home from skiing targhee the last two days. A few good knee plus deep turns in places but then it turned to buttery smooth pow. Still had a blast. But it was not the fluffy fluff pow pow I had hoped for. Im sure some of you have seen the photos circulating instagram lately of terminal cancer looking to be in pretty good condition. Wondering if anyone else has been out to the rubies recently. I talked to a friend out there and he said it was pretty good a few days ago but im a little worried about this warming trend, record highs out that way. Anyways thinking about making the jaunt over there on friday. Please chime in if you have been out there recently or have any tips for where to stay, food, access, ect. Hope everyone is making the best out of our clockwork begining of the year drought

elko has plenty of cheap lodging but it's 40 or so miles away. i've slept in my subie at the base of the canyon and been totally comfortable. and i enjoyed the beer here. food and playoffs too

There was a group of girls at Alpine skiing in sports bras today. I guess it really is spring time. Pond skim next?

The snow was actually pretty good but Sherwood is cooked and not really worth the hike over.

Does squaw not bother shutting down the high T once the corn gets cooked? Always though that was the best part of Alpine's snow policy.

Corn isn't cooked, Sherwood Express loading area is now totally burnt.
