Zipfit Grand Fuckin’ Teton Liner

GregL can do it. He punched two Langes for me, RS 130 and Xt3 140, both right on the pivot. I bet others could, too, with care.

A question for those w miles on the GFT and Intuitions:

I'm pretty intrigued by these tourable zips as a do-it-all liner but wary of the reported coldness. I've skied Intuitions for 15 yrs and have always loved the warmth. For active resort skiing w/ long traversing, short bootpacking, sidestepping, etc when I'm on the edge of sweaty but w/ comfortable core and warm dry hands, my feet are usually on the edge of cold with an intermittently numb right toe. And that's with a "scuse me I gotta Lange" to unbuckle the lowers on every lift ride.

I have good shell fits and good liner bakes with double toe caps... great Intuition fits that ski great, or so I think.

Q: will a similarly good fitting GFT just be too fkn cold for me? Or will the goo pressure distribute so perfectly that I could expect a better skiing system with less buckle pressure and maybe slightly less impinged circulation?

Have you guys previously stoked and just-warm in Intuitions been able to keep warm toes in the GFT?

I had a similar feeling but it was caused by too much cork over the ankle bone making the fit really tight around the pivot point of the boot. This was the case even after baking them to get an initial fit.

What solved it for me was heating up the liner, putting it on, and using my thumbs to push all the cork away from my the painful area of my ankle bone prior to putting the liner in the boot.

That got me to a point where the pain was much better and they’ve become comfy around that spot after a few tours.

For the zipcurious - how important is it to get fitted for a zipfit at your local bootfitter? Is there more or less room for error when fitting at home vs intuitions?

I ask because it appears that zipfit and my local shop is out of the my size / suggested liner… If I could find that liner lightly used or online order from an out of state shop, should I move on it? If I am confident on my shell fit, how accurate is zipfits online liner selector?

If you know how a boot is supposed to fit and you're patient and ok with a little pain during break-in you'll be fine with diy. I've done a dozen intuitions at home (hundreds in a shop) and zips are the easiest and most forgiving liners I've ever fit myself. Make sure you have the plunger tool and some omfit tubes with the new liners. I used the microwave method: wrap the liner in an old t-shirt and heat on 50% for 1:30 for the initial break in. Dead easy. Can’t fuck it up and you can try a million times. Just get it warm, nothing crazy.

Bigger question is why don’t you bring it to your local bootfitter that is familiar with zipfits and have them do it? We charge $30cdn to fit them initially and $10 per tube plus time for extra cork and fitting. It’s literally the easiest thing the bootfitter will do all day.

Easy as could be, Velcro doesn't really stick very well to the plastic on the gft, but doesn't really matter.

Ski the whites has a nice selection of spoilers, fwiw.

Did you mold your shell at the same time? I can barely get my foot in there with the GFT and no shell mold.

I did not shell mold and perhaps I should have.

Regardless there are thin spots right at the ankle bone that maybe a shell mold would have helped. I ordered a few tubes of cork to see if it solves the problem. I'm not $600 into these things and based on everything I was reading/listening to I hope these last me a decade at this point.

I’m endlessly trying to resolve my wife’s ultra low volume feet touring boot issues. Inbounds she’s happy skiing 95mm Dobermanns (rivets removed) unpunched, with intuitions, extra heel padding, and cranked down. She could easily go narrower if there were some sensible options.

She’s currently touring in Lange XT3 LVs (claimed 97mm) which are way too heavy and have minimal ROM, but they’re they were the only touring boot that comes close to fitting her. However, even with a HV Intuition pro tour liner, and extra padding to try and lock down her heel, she has to crank them down in ways that are uncomfortable, is still swimming in them, and in anything other than perfect powder she hates them.

Is it plausible (it’s an expensive road to go down) that Zipfits could actually work to take up all the volume she’d need to make one of the mid-volume, do it all, 1300gm touring boots ski and and walk like the 93-95mm touring boot she actually requires?

Sounds like my wife. I’m going to keep a lookout for some zips for her Langes over the summer.

Scarpa Quattro is an lv touring option.

I went scarpa quattro after not being able to make the zgtp work reasonably and it’s pretty sweet if you set aside all the scarpa tongue and rivet weirdness. It’s very low volume through the mid foot but it’s wider in the forefoot. I still needed a thin shim and some padding over the top of the toe box of the liner to dial it in. It also doesn’t have the same heel hold. But it’s the best of the new line of lightish/siffish touring boots so far.

Would be pretty awesome if you could just use the GFT liner for everything although I’m not sure it would work to swap between Nordicas and scarpas regularly…she might just always be in the remoulding phase and rarely be truly dialed.

I can definitely get a little heel lift when I’m skiing hard. The instep is pretty low, though. So it kind of depends on the shape of your foot whether it will hold your heel down or not.

Maybe that was a bit too harsh. I don’t have major heel hold issues on either after fitting. when the bootfitter added those foam butterfly’s my heel retention on the zgtp was pretty good. With the Quattro, there is such little instep volume that it holds your heel fine. But I do notice a little bit of lift here and there especially if buckles are loose. It just doesn’t seem to have as pronounced of a heel cup.

I've done this for touring focused trips with a couple days in bounds. It's fine, but way lower volume and softer than a gara. That being said, a Cochise shell +gft is probably as high performance hybrid as you can get.

The GFT definitely skis down better than a Gara walks. Unless your boot is way too soft, the GFT is a sweet upgrade to any alpine boot.

If her foot is truly that small, a zipfits won’t convert a mid volume touring boot into a higher compression ultra low volume fit.
Zips are great for snugging up a shell that’s pretty close, but the areas outside the cork pockets will still feel roomy. Forefoot width obviously, but also base of heels and lower achilles.

Where does everyone stand on removing the liner strap and/or laces to improve walkability? I removed the strap for a tour yesterday and found it walked much better, with the downside of the tongue doesn't stay as tight to the shin. I was able to remedy this by using my power strap half on the liner and half on the shell. Will probably go with this going forward, and just add more cork to the tongue. Boot is a ZGTP (25.5 with 25.5 liner).

When I got home I removed the laces as well, and was surprised that it's still quite easy to step into the boot, and that it walks even better. Has me seriously considering going lace-less as well. What are you all doing?

The only thing the strap and laces do for me is make the liner stiffer. In doing that, it kills the walk mode because it forces the entire liner to flex rather than allowing the tongue and cuff to act separately. . I pulled the strap off right away and now just have the laces only on the bottom fabric lace loop to keep the ankle tight when the boot is loose. Also, if you are using laces, get rid of the toggles for tightening and tie it shoe laces style. No plastic thing on your shin and you don’t have 12” of extra laces flopping around.

As for keeping the tongue tight to your shin, put your power strap above the shell, only on your liner. I find the GFT tongue to be concave so it does make the strap try to slide down. Remedy this by running your strap through the tongue pull loop or duct tape a 2” long rigid piece of material to the pull loop and run your strap above it. This will create a catch for your strap to sit on. Will post pics later.

Has anyone run their GFTs in alpine boots? How’d they ski?

I have a pair of pretty beat World Cups in my Hawk Ultras and have the GFTs in my Hawx Ultra XTDs. I was thinking about replacing the World Cups, but am wondering if I’d be just as well served by running the GFTs in both boots given the shells are pretty much identical other than the walk mode on the XTDs.

Can’t hurt to try? Is the shell fit different between the two? Folks at oly said the GFT actually has more cork in the rear ankle area so heel hold might be better than gara lv.

The hold will be better but the GFT is like a whiskey dick compared to the gara or World Cup. So it’s definitely not going to be as stiff or respond as well. But will be able to go all night.

Only thing I didn't love about the GFT in the Zero Gs was that liner cuff was much higher than the shell. Picked up one of those Atomic dual straps and so far seems like the move. Excited to try this out - might be the last thing needed to make this the perfect boot for me (famous last words).

Jealous. I ordered a dual strap 8 months ago and it still hasn’t shown. I will also be replacing the wire buckles with something like the Hawx buckles to make for easier latching.

Does anyone have any experience running GFT's in tele boots? I really like my TX Pro's, but I've got some skinnie little feet (alpine boots run a 97mm last), so the wide lasts of the scarpa's aren't the best. I'm thinking about getting some GFT's, and throwing some extra cork in there to take up the volume. Anyone have experience doing something similar?

I ski my tx comps with regular zips. I’m sure the gft would work the same.

I think you'll be a fan. My goal was to mimic (or improve) the same "close to shin" feeling when you use the built-in liner strap. My first attempt was using 3 tubes of cork - no dice. I find the liner strap affects ROM when walking, so hopefully this is the best of both worlds.

Interesting choice on replacing the buckles. Would be curious to see what that looks like. I haven't had any complaints with the buckles personally, but I do happen to have an old pair of Hawx XTD laying around. So If I ever do have issues I could be tempted to try that as well.

the cork pockets still don’t run that far out into the last of the boot, it is more neoprene out there then anything else. I would be half tempted in your situation to size up on the liner and put more volume in there if you go with a GFT. Or get a higher volume Zipfit then the GFT. Like a gara hv or a freeride. But those still aren’t giving that much more volume to the last area of the foot….

needless to say I would find a Zipfit dealer and go stuff the two different sizes in your boot.

the gara does ski a lot better then the GFT. The stiffness is definitely noticeable when I change liners. I have skied my GFT and my gara stealth in the same boot on the same day. I could definitely feel the stiffness difference. I would tour in a gara if the cork didn’t move around as much as it does when hiking. The GFT doesn’t have a cork migration problem that is noticeable to me at least.

Wat about the GFT in the Tigard?? Need to get this stock liner out ASAP

I have GFTs in Tx Pros, and also like a 97mm last in alpine boots. After adding I think 2.5 tubes of cork to each liner, the GFTs are pretty amazing. Definitely not the lightest touring boots out there, but the added weight is worth it for me over Intuitions that pack out too quickly.

Thinking about putting these into some 1300g touring boots (Atomic Backland XTD Carbons). Recently diagnosed myself with a Mortons Neuroma, and want to add more width in the front, but my chicken ankles are already feeling a little loose after 3 days in the stock liners.

Will I regret adding these to a lightweight boot? Sounds like everyone is happy so far, but I'm already 1k into the boots, and don't want to be 1500 into something that isn't going to be 100%.

i'd say go for it. if you're already feeling ankle looseness at 3 days, it's only going to worse and you'll need to take up that volume somehow.
if you don't like em, i can't imagine you'll have much difficulty selling them near the purchase price.
those aren't exactly gagnoux mountain boots either. the downhill performance and comfort will more than offset any perceived weight penalty.

You don't think you can address this with some Intuitions and footbeds? I also have Morton's Neuroma, both feet, one foot has had surgery to correct and the other foot can be fairly painful. I also just got some new Backland Carbon XTD's and have zero days in them, I haven't really even done an in depth try on yet to be honest. I've been in Scarpa Maestrales for the past 5-6 years. Like you I also have wide forefeet and skinny heels.

For me, if I need to correct the fit, I'll start with an insole that has a Met pad, probably a Sole brand. My next move would be an intuition and punches.

May not solve your problem, but a much cheaper experiment than ZipFits.

The Cochise is much roomier than the 0G. If you’re the type of person who would add a bunch of cork to make the Cochise feel snug everywhere ei th no voids, it would be too tight in the 0G.

Since you need them for your Cochise, you may as well fit them for those boots and then see how it goes with the 0G. Perhaps you can just not add cork to the Cochise and buckle it a little tighter to compensate.

I size up in my Zipfit. If you have a 10mm shell fit or don’t like the feeling of a tight sock, size up. Haven’t found a downside to it yet.
