You're talking about Shine. Those "probiotic, fermented slaws" are pretty awesome. They're basically variations on pickles, sauerkraut and kimchi - super flavorful. The fennel slaw is my personal favorite. And the place isn't all vegan and gluten free; their house bread (comes with yam butter) is excellent, and they do a solid roast chicken. I'm not a health food nut, I just like good food, and they've got it (though it's kinda silly expensive unless you're there at happy hour). Great back room for music, too.
I remember reading that article about Boulder years ago, and thinking the same thing: apparently the author isn't very good at finding friends he's compatible with. Yeah, there are assholes here, including the pseudo-hippy and extreme-athlete variety. But it's not like you have to hang out with them; I rarely come across them, and they're good for a laugh when I do. There are also awesome folks here who are fun, smart, down to earth, and like to do the same recreational stuff that you do. If you can't find them, you're not looking very hard.
