Thanks. I don't know if I'd say the company is shitting the bed, but it's sure not Rosey. I was told it was not performance related, but who knows. Never had a bad review or missed a yearly raise. Hit all expected targets. The focus is likely more dev, but you still need a pretty solid systems guy typically. The new investor might already have a guy they like that could get up to speed. The new investors are kinda calling this shots. Risk is 100% on them for sure. I hear tell the deal states if no profit is turned in 1.5years they will be liquidated.
Maybe it's for the better for me, but I probably would've gone down with the ship given the chance.

Totally get it, nobody wants this to happen. But here's the way I look at it. Six months from now, maybe a year, maybe 2, you'll find yourself in a good situation, at a job you like and are happy to have. And you'd never find yourself in that situation in the future if not for this layoff. So it will work out for the better.

The only offers I've seen are part time with no bennies, sometimes one will even pay more than it costs to take the job. I've gotten hosed a couple of times because on my resume there are only 2 jobs for the previous 20 years. I've been told, more than once, that there is no way I could possibly have the variety of experiences necessary to thrive in ... environment because my work experiences don't support versatility or something similar. The bimbo at the state unemployment office even told me to make up things so I would have more jobs on the resume and tell people to give me references if they're contacted.

There just aren't any full time permanent gigs for anyone over ~45 anymore other than in select spots and even those will dry up soon. Those retail jobs you say you'll fall back on are already gone, there's nothing full time and nothing pays enough to be worth making the effort to get to.

Question, for those with dependents that have been down this road, how did healthcare work out? I've (noc on wood) never missed a paycheck and have built up very good savings, but have always been W-2 and beleive in being ready for what may come. Have dependent family/kids, near as I can tell any health insurance policy runs $1k? $750 ? a month...

Lots of variables in pricing healthcare but $1k/month sounds very cheap for a family.

That's true that automation and AI are replacing people in the historically easy hire arenas. There's still part time work pretty available. Just about every restaurant and big box store I go to have help wanted signs up. When you live in a state with only 6 weeks of very low unemployment benefits taking two or three part time jobs becomes a necessity rather than a burden that costs more than it's worth. I remember once getting 18 MONTHS of unemployment after the dot com crash. Now I could only get 6 weeks tops so I'm not passing on anything remotely doable over $10/hour if I lose my current gig.

Most everyone has been laid off at least once if you've been working for 20yrs or so and it does suck.

Twice for me, but luckily I was young with no reponsibilities. First company went under and the second one in Taos he "laid me off", but actually canned my ass because I gave the ducks water. Imagine that...me giving ducks water because they didn't have any. That's a whole nother story. I still hate those idiots with ducks on the mesa.

You could try running the numbers on your state exchange if you have one.

I was just talking to this guy doing some work here he pays $1K/mo with a $6K deductible just for him and his wife

^ ^ ^ That's at or a bit below the mean in WA or OR. Add kids and it goes way the fuck up. HC coverage is the big wild card for self-employed/consultant until you hit 65. Sad there isn't a 55+ y.o. self-employed/unemployed Medicare buy-in option.

We were shopping plans when my wife was laid off then starting a new temp job. Until she got a temp job with good bens we were looking at taking my insanely high deduct plan for myself and her and putting the kids on the ACA because it was legally doable based on our other metrics. Now her temp job changed to a different vendor with good long term perm possibility.. but even shittier benefits.

If new investors are involved it could just be the never-ending quest to cut costs. Those who make the decisions don't always know or care what everyone contributed or what the job entails and just expect that those who are left can pick up the pieces. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Some employers just plain suck at communicating, too.

This is what it appears to be, but ya never know, maybe I do suck. Reviews would tell you different.

I really like contracting. Being freed from office politics is nice. Nobody gives a shit what a contractor thinks and no one will tell you shit. You get your assignments/projects, and meet your dead lines

I didn't have a gig yesterday, and I got one today...

I don't know if I can be part of a "team" again. Offices suck... there is always some fucking tool bag trying to make points at other peoples expense
