Niacin, toe warmers and an antiperspirant stick

I don't have any experience with the gft's, but I've skied my freerides in -20F air temps, with wind chill somewhere around -45F. Toes were chilly, but fine. No toe heaters or electronics or anything like that. That was also riding lifts, where my feet are generally colder than if I'm touring.
It's a vasodilator, and an old trick from a former life ice climbing in the north east. Never taken it for skiing but it will keep your extremities warmer. The suppression of the vasoconstriction response when cold does make you more susceptible to hypothermia though...

How does the width of the gft toe box and overall length compare to a tour wrap? I’ve been skiing a 27 tw in a 27.5 Hoji Free. The width of the toe box is perfect but it feels a bit short even after molding with double toe caps. I know I can fit a 28 tw in the Hoji to get the length/width comfort but the heel hold will still be less than optimal. I would happily take the price/weight penalty for a locked in heel if the width/length is similar to a 28 wrap.

The neoprene toebox for Zipfits are quite thin, stretchy and forgiving. Even if they’re a bit short or narrow at first, IME they will stretch to accommodate your foot after a day or two. I have more forefoot room with GFTs than pro tours, even after padding/moulding the pro tours.
I have used Zipfits for the past decade. Oldest pair in my Scarpa touring boots and the newer pair in my Tecnica Mach 1 MV. Both liners are Gara. Boots are 26.5 and liners are 27.5. 26.5 liners were too short for me.

I mean that’s going to depend on your personal shell fit. My 27.5 zipfits work well in all my 27.5 shells. But I have a snug fit in a Lange. If your foot fits well in the shell to begin with then I’d just match the sizing. But if you have funky stuff like a low instep in a high volume instep boot then that will change some things.
Just a side thought…. I have added a tube of cork overall and I’m tight with no slip anywhere. If you are adding more then 3 or 4 tubes of cork then the shell is probably too big to begin with.
Sometimes you don’t get much choice on shell though. I’ve got ZeroGs sized down as far as I can without toe work, and I still have movement with 9 tubes added. My feet also like to go a bit numb but I think that’s because I am playing around with forefoot shims to deal with the massively tall toe box of the ZeroG that the Zipfit has no capacity to deal with and actually makes roomier.
Ps. Pre punching my navicular and entire outside of my foot are pressed against the shell in a shell check. Low instep and low volume ankle with a desire for a snug boot.
Used to have the Hawx. My shell check is tighter in the zero g than the Hawx for the most part after punching. Hawx is a heel spur machine though. I can’t put my foot in them anymore.
Hawx has way better heel hold. Zero g is tighter at the bottom and seems to open up at the top of the foot. Like a wedge.
Most people I know who have zipfits have at least 6 tubes. Zipfits are really thin compared to intuitions and have no squish so it’s either tight or loose. Even if you have a hard stop on your heel lift.
ya. Which brings me back to my original statement…. Probably not the right shell fit. Sure I can make a round peg fit in a square hole, but I’d rather make a round peg fit in a snug round hole that’s close to correct to start with.
I can’t believe you got 9 tubes in without blowing apart the bladder.
A size larger liner gives more space than the stock liner, especially with the thin toe box of a Zipfit. This shows that I am tight in my boot. Not sure what you’re getting at there.
My foot measure 253mm. There’s no chance in hell I’m going in a 23 for a touring boot. Do you work at Pulse in Revy or something?
You were quick to suggest I ski in a Hawx. I’m curious what other low volume performance touring boots you would have in mind. Because the options are slim. Quattro is on my list but it didn’t exist when I got my boot and I’m sceptical about them so far. Also, I’d need a large punch at the back of my 5th met which would be limited by the carbon reinforcement.
if you can show me where I recommended a hawx, it would be appreciated, in fact any time I’ve ever recommended anything from atomic or Salomon would be appreciated. And no, I’m come from a race background and have spent tons of hours on race room benches being ground into plugs, I’m just saying there is a better shell fit. As for your assumption, I’ll make one myself, you stuff every jerry out there into a 130+ flex boot that fits incorrectly and chase problems with aftermarket liner sales. Sounds like a great sales tactic.
This seems like a silly argument. Goldenbc's in zero g's which are the 2nd? 3rd? lowest volume touring boot on the market that actually skis decently. If he says it takes 9 tubes of cork to fill it out, I'd believe it. Fucking touring boots are all too damn wide and roomy.
Thank you for the input!
The dreamliners I was running in my Vulcans are cut longer than my tour wraps and the wraps didn’t stretch as much as I expected. I really miss having a bit of a void in front of my toes. I finally found a pair of 27.5 gft’s locally so I’m going to try them on in the morning. Good to know they can stretch if necessary.
@ sovt, my bad that was the other guy asking about the Hawx. My comments still stand.
Well I got all ready to order a pair of GFT’s and emailed them ahead of time.
Turns out they don’t play nice with the Hoji boots so it’s either new shells and $500 liners or back to the drawing board.
I found the honeycomb material catches on the hoji free walk mode wings when going from walk to ski mode. I’m sure some gorilla tape or minor surgery might fix that

+1 to this. What’s the 1st (and 2nd) lowest?
I’ve been trying to chase volume issues on the zgtp too. Bootfitter liked the shell fit better than the hawx and said if I went down another shell size he would have to punch the heel out so much it would interfere with the ski/walk mechanism. Two full length shims, ankle butterfly’s a spoiler and a green superfoot later I feel like I’m doing something wrong…
So I picked up the Quattro xt on a whim as REI happened to have a used pair in my size. Best out of box fit I’ve had since the la sportiva spectre. Only issue is it feels like there still might be some room over the top of my toes…but nothing like the zgtp’s (or Cochise) where I was rocking back on my heels inside the boot in variable snow.
This thread has actually been very helpful as I loved my zip fits but found them too stiff for touring and was wondering if I could use the GFT to take up some room in touring boots (especially over the top of the forefoot). Sounds like that’s a big no and a higher volume intuition liner is still one of the only decent options in that regard?

When the venerable mercury liner was on it's way out I was starting to hurt my toes by curling them. Tightening the front buckle hurt my bunions. Full length hims hurt my instep. I fixed it by putting foam on top of the toes. GF complained about arch pain. I found it was caused by her curling her toes. Foam on top fixed it. I have not seen this done before, but in my limited experience it is very effective at improving fit without cramming the toes and instep with shims bellow.
Remove that lower honey comb reinforcement so it won’t catch on the Hoji lock. It makes a smooth rearward ROM too.
Very carefully cut the stitching. Be super careful cutting the stitching inside the little pouch. Cut the honeycomb off and leave the last bit stiched into the edge of the liner, under the black edging.
Great reviews from everyone who has done it so far.
Thanks GoldenBC. Great to hear that surgery works well for the hoji
I keep asking about putting padding over the toes! Most people just kind of look at me like I’m crazy.

Anyone stick a spoiler between the calf strap and the liner? Perhaps with some stick on hook and loop? Seems like it would stay put.
On the back of the boot, yes. It’s easy. Just break the glue on the Velcro strap so you can pull it off the liner a bit. Squeeze it in there and you’re good. Add some duct tap to make it bomber. Easy mod.
Not that you were asking, but for the other guy, I put the plastic from a tecnica tongue on the tongue of my Zipfit so that it wouldn’t fold in half over the shell. Worked great. Stiffened the liner a touch since it’s such a soft flexing liner. Also gives a good ledge to hold your powerstrap high without falling down all the time. Attachment 452033

I did the lazy version of your elegant tongue mod just to figure out the right lean on my boot/binder combo. Turns out I didn’t need to be any more upright
I have two days in the GFT in my Hawx 130 ultra (and one day resort touring in the xtd variant) and my ankle bones are in a bunch of pain. I am pretty sure it's the area with the least amount of cork after it's migrated to other areas around the ankle bone.
I got them fitted at the show by baking them but no extra cork.
Any solution here? Add some cork to the outside pocket of both boots to soften the ankle area up? Trying to figure out when you add cork, tough because the fit seems tight when I put them in the boot but not so bad once I'm in after a few runs.
