holy crap, i had one of those in 88-89, it was a Nova with the Concourse trim level i want to say it hada 305ci in it? it was ear wax gold in color and banana fast on the highway (i made it from Calgary to North Vancouver in under 7 hours and vice versa a bunch of times) it had a hatch so you could put 215cm Super Gs up between the seats, great ski car for a single guy. thanks for the memories
You seem to confusing personal finance with having a hobby that you do on the cheap.
Fixing up your own car to save dough does not equal the gearhead who wants to have a couple fun toys but doesnt want to blow the bank. You want to save as much money as possible, where the gearhead knows hes blowing money, but doesnt want to take a second mortgage on the house..
So yeah, two different intended meaning of the word budget going on here.
No. I merely read the title of this thread, which includes the preposition "for the budget minded," and suggested that collecting cars and being budget minded are usually inconsistent pursuits. Pretty fucking obvious.
Well, if you consider a "couple," i.e., two, cars a "collection," never mind.
A 1969 (IIRC) VW Squareback is the earliest car I remember my parents having. I definitely do not recall it being fast, but it was rusty and loud.
Dad replaced it with a 1980 VW Dasher, which is the car that got handed down to me in 1988 or so. 4-cyl + 3-spd automatic = 35mph up I-80 in the Sierra.
... these are/were the start of my skepticism of VW products.
Quit fuckin arguing about the word collection. Yes car collecting and budget are conflicting terms. But if I were to pick up another car, (the 633csi bimmer on ksl is calling my name, just no more space, and my wife would kill me) I would have 5 cars, I didn't mention the wifes 04 4Runner. Not sure where you draw the line for collection, but 5 cars for 2 drivers, or 4 cars for one driver (she ONLY drives the 4Runner) is a good sized quiver. We were there for a while back when I had the 944 race car.
Maybe we can turn this thread into a budget maggot version of bringatrailer.com
Here is that bimmer on KSL. $3500 asking price. Car is in Salt Lake. It's a manual, and if you were to throw a better set of rims on there, and get the euro bumpers, you have a pretty nice looking classic BMW for cheap.

He had the 1968 "Fastback" with a 2.0 Type4 motor in it, IIRC, which was also used in the 4 banger 914s. Dunno if he bought it that way or did the conversion himself.
It actually looked more like this:

Oh, so sorry for your butthurt. OP goes on TGR and says "I am on a budget, I have a new baby and a new house with a larger mortgage" and asks about a "car collection for the budget minded," and you think he didn't invite someone saying hey dude you've got a new baby and a bigger mortgage and you're asking about expanding your car collection? Padded Room is officially fucked up if you can't flip that kinda shit. Next time I'll remind myself that it's impolite to interrupt the consumerism/blingwannabe circle jerk with any mention of thrift (and thus setting oneself up for an early retirement and thus more skiing and other mountain travel).
Back to the subject matter: My family had a VW Squareback with the stock 1.6L. A Squareback or Fastback with a rebuilt 1.8L or 2.0L would be a fun worthy project, decent snow car too.
Well I am on a budget, and skiing is expensive as well. You can flip it back on me if you want, but my 3 cars cost me less than my wife's used 04 4Runner. 3 cars for a total of about $12.5k, that's fairly budget to me. Yeah I spend a couple hundred here and there on maintenance, or the occasional upgrade, but I buy my parts used when I can and it makes sense, I perform all the work on my cars myself. Not sure what isn't budget minded about all that. We aren't stretching the food stamp budget to buy the milk each week.
If it doesn't fit your idea of budget minded, that's fine, forget the baby and the other stuff, and just focus on affordable interesting cars.
It's cool. This the Padded Room, where something aint right if somebody aint breaking your balls
No collection, but I do love cars and I finally bought the car I have dreamed of since 3rd grade.... 911. It's an '03 Carerra 4 (AWD) It's pretty much everything I had hoped!

My Brother-in-Law in Breck had one of those as his daily driver, well - the 993 variant. As soon as it snowed he hated it - said it had too much power in the power/weight ratio and thus was faaaaar harder to drive & handle in snow than a simple Jeep (his wife's car.) He had an older 911 RWD that he said was more predictable in its handling on slick surfaces, and putting chains on the rear of a "normal" 911 makes for a much better ski car.
He LOVED it in the summer tho. Turns out that just because it's AWD doesn't mean "snow car" after all.
Gee, that car driving funky in snow? Imagine that. Gotta kick ass in rain tho.
Yeah, even my old man's Audi TT isn't a very friendly snow car.
Be careful with that 6 Series shark. Those are maintenance whores, and that one e36 M3 wheels. May be a clue of some other "weird" items in its history. Get one with old school BBS type wheels that looks original.
Not this is my type of thread!
My ghetto mountain vehicle collection:
"Wang" 1985 Toyota 4Runner 22EFI, SAS, 4" OME lift 33" BFG's, T-100 tranny and transfer case. Daily driver and back country hunting rig.
Attachment 130292
"Mogwai" 1979 Ford F150, 300 I6, 2" front springs, 33" Mud Terrains, fabbed winch bumper. Ranch truck and good-timer.
Attachment 130293
"Detlef" 1995 F350 7.3L, 5" exhaust, intake. Ranch truck and daily driver.

Next vehicle might actually be a car. As odd is it sounds from the above, I too have been eyeballing those older Mercedes and BMW's.
Nice mallards.
What age? Things like the 2002 - where the owner's manual included a wiring diagram for the car and there's plenty of room, or most other BMWs/Benzs before the 80s (sedans of the age with a slushbox included push starting instructions for the slushy) are a different beast than the 80s and later critters.
Another bucket project is to make a rote sau replica/big benz rally car. A benz with a honking V8.
Don't let this one get away.

I almost bought one of these in 1984,
Attachment 130540
but ended up ordering a 1985 Mustang GT (and waiting 4 months), I have no idea why, I think I was tired of working on unreliable cars and thought maybe the Mustang wasn't as bad as it really was.
I guess I have a collection now but it's more practical than fun, Pick up, camper, island car, and off island car.
You all know what they look like...
Volvo 1800 ES
Jag XKE hardtop with the straight 6
71-74 MGB GT
early '60's CJ5 with the 225 V6, Muncie tranny and Dana 44's.
76 Ford Econoline with a Vista Cruiser roof and shag carpet would be fun
You guys and your 240 SX's, meh. My first car was an 81 200SX and that thing was a hoot. I think that if I was doing it now I would want an 84 200SX Turbo though.
87 Isuzu Impulse Turbo - suspension by Lotus and plenty of power where it was needed.
84-86 Supra or Celica GT would be fun.
A Grand National or T Type or even the corresponding Hurst Olds.
What's with the 635? Try a 3.0 CSI if you want easy to work on and just a silly fun car to drive.
Ha on the Omega with the 260! I learned to drive in a 79 Olds Cutlass Cruiser with that motor and would definitely pick one up if it was worthy. I'd also love to have a late '60's/early '70's Vista Cruiser with the 350.
Other than the Jag and the GN/T Type these are all pretty affordable if you can find one that hasn't rotted away.
I currently have three that satisfy most of my needs.
First is the 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has now been relegated to a ski rig/awful weather beater. The 249 transfer case is a pain in the ass, and the 5.2L 8 sucks down gas, but it works really really well in snow.
Second is a 99 M3. It does most things very well. I have stiffened the suspension significantly for autocross and track use, but I've never had anyone complain about the ride.
Attachment 130662
Third is my baby, a 94 Dodge Viper. This thing is more crude than you can imagine. It has no AC, windows, roof, power anything, or exterior door handles. It does have an 8L V-10, obscene amounts of rubber, and a T-56 6-speed. I didn't appreciate how hard it has been trying to kill me until I bought the M3. It's that much more frightening now that I kinda know what I'm doing driving.

I'm not sure what the next toy might be. Well, I know what it would be in each class of how-much-money-I-have-to-blow. Just gotta find the dollars.
Thought I would bump this thread. I did some work on a couple of my cars this weekend. Fixed the sunroof on the bimmer, painted the wheels, and swapped out the ski rack for a second bike tray.
Cruiser got a new front wheel bearing.
Mr2 doesn't seem to need anything except some open road and the radar detector.https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-e...429_191358.jpg

And this for sale in SLC for $3300? I'm lucky I don't have more garage space, cause I want to s52 swap one of these suckers.

Love the old Citroens!
You bought it? Nice!
congratulations I always think I want to do this but have not made the move. Enjoy your ride
