heres a photo showing where the edges stop. Same proportions on the tail of the ski
Also noticed when i got my skis back after having them mounted that they're not aligned. It's about 1cm difference give or take a little bit. Is it worth going and getting it remounted or will the screw holes be too close and possibly cause failure? Not impressed at all to say the least.
So Alka, since we've got your attention...
How 'bout that indemnification list?

I really don't think you are going to see any significant decrease in durability with the edge only running so far. UHMW is a pretty strong material and once you get past a certain point in the rocker, the the edge just isn't really doing anything. As long as the edge isn't pulling out, I think you'll be fine. We've talked about doing something similar in a new large pow ski we've been working on. Our goals have mostly been focused on decreasing weight in what is a pretty huge ski, but it will also help the tips from being so hooky. We haven't tested this out on snow yet, so can't comment from personal experience, but for a pow oriented ski I think it can definitely work.

An off center mount is definitely the shop's issue. Every single shop tech, from the dumbest to the smartest, is taught to measure the jig/mount point from the tip and/or tail. Unfortunately it looks like you got had by a first year shop kid. Sorry man, total buzz kill.Quote:

I'm just being a jerk. I'm critical of general cap construction because it ushered in a wave of mass-produced, cheaply built skis. I guess you could say, I'm wary of it. When cap construction first came on the scene, it was billed as a revolutionary new concept when it was actually a way to more cheaply manufacture skis and snowboards.Quote:

^^^ I feel the same way about the traditional cap ski. I was working in a shop when things went from all torsion box to nothing but caps. Pain in the butt to rebuild damaged sidewalls. But by that time, Salomon had been buiding their monocoque skis for years and personally I think it is a big distinction. For those that dont know, a cap ski is just a smaller torsion box ski with the edges spaced out a bit from the torsion box and then a cap placed over it. The cap actually transmits very little energy to the edges. A monocoque ski is different in that the thing that looks like a cap is actually structural. It is really hard to picture, but if you have ever held just the cosmetic cap from a ski and the top of a monocoque ski the difference is amazing. Picture the difference between a piece of sheetmetal vs. an I-beam.
Now back to your regularly scheduled thread about Rocker 2s. BTW anyone skied them since last night :D
It would be interesting to see a cut of that compared to a cut of a traditional cap.. I always though monocoque was just sollys name for cap construction.Quote:

Yea they did... as well as 1080s. But those skis did not last. Your rarely see them on the hill anymore. You see plenty of Explosivs, Seth pistols and other iconic skis from that generation, but not the sollys.Quote:

The Rocker2 isn’t going to officially be released until next year, around November 2012. If you’re lucky, or have mad skills, you could get one of the roughly 30 pairs in the U.S this season; I would assume the number of Rocker2’s may increase as the season goes on, as more people will get them for testing.

This information comes from one of Colorado’s Salomon Reps, as of Wednesday night. The rep also said that some lucky guys got to test a few pairs at A-Basin last week for a promotional shoot.
If you’re lucky, or have mad skills, you could get one of the roughly 30 pairs in the U.S this season; I would assume the number of Rocker2’s may increase as the season goes on, as more people will get them for testing.
Does anyone who has skied these know how they compare to the K2 Hellbent. Are they more versatile than the bent's?
^^^ Looking at the pictures, it looks like these are going to have some camber under foot which should put them in a different league than Hellbents when you hit something groomed. But that is just my $.02 from looking at the pictures. Bump for someone that has skied them..... again :D
I got to see them in person and had them next to 183 Bent Chetlers. I was curious to see the similarities since they're from the same parent company.
The rocker profile on the Rocker2 is quite similar to the Bent Chetlers, the main difference being a bit less camber underfoot but still some. They are stiffer through the midsection and tips and slightly lighter weight. Also, the 184 Rocker2s are in reality about 1 cm longer than the 183 Bent Chetlers, meaning the sizing is somewhat consistent between the 2 lines.
MD9 may be out on them today. He may have something to say tonight.
If they're sufficiently stiff, they look really nice. Douglas has a great way of convincing you that they think things through on ski design. Sweet.
I took them down to the bird today and while the conditions were not what this ski was designed for I had an awesome time. FYI, I mounted mine +3.5 of the line or 1" back from the actual center of the ski (where Douglas mounted his).
I just hit Regulator off the tram as to not rock the new/rare skis. It was pretty icy and vis was less than good. The skis wanted to go fast, but it was my first non pow run of the year and I wanted to dial them in. On the steep, icy groomed it felt like I was putting a ton of pressure right under foot to try and keep speed in check. Once I got around the corner by the top of Gadzoom and off the icy manmade stuff they started carving really nicely.
There was some smooth windbuff right under the zoom chair that was fun to smear them around in. They're super quick edge to edge. You can maneuver around really quick. It's weird sometimes you think they ski short and sometimes you think they ski long.
The skis are really nimble given their size. I think the swing weight concept really paid off. I caught up with a buddy who's a bird local and is a great skier. He skis through trees pretty fast. He was on thinner skis, but I had no problem throwing them around in tight spots and keeping up.
The biggest thing I noticed is these things are like auto pilots for spins. I'm thinking it's all about that swing weight concept again. All the weight is under foot and not out in the tips and tails. It keeps you super balanced when spinning. It's also insanely easy to spin them. 184 cm and 122 under foot is not exactly small, but they're so easy to whip around. I can't wait to get them out on a pow day... and pow days are on the immediate horizon. :D
These things should be monsters for tricking cliffs.
