Car decisions, chapter 249:
My 16yo has an ‘08 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, manual. 145k. Not my first choice of a car for him, but it was a gift from family. He’s pretty cautious as a driver but it’s still too fast for a 16yo. It also needs some $$$ and I worry about keeping it on the road. It’s also not super practical for his hobbies - he likes to MTB and ski and fish.
My DD is a ‘13 allroad with 155k. I have the itch to upgrade, but have her in a good spot at the moment I think. With no other considerations, I’d trade it in and buy new next spring/summer. Probably an A6 allroad.
Thinking of selling the eclipse, picking up a gx470 or similar. Something that’s bulletproof but still road trippable. He can drive it until he gets something else and then I can petition the GOTOS thread for local and internet fame.
Also thinking about swapping cars with him, selling the eclipse, and putting that toward my new whip sooner than later.
Or I just push…. Keep the eclipse on the road through the winter, and probably swap him the allroad then. If I do that I’m in for a set of snow tires for the eclipse.
WWMD?

Brakes. Steering and suspension bits. Which I’m doing anyways. After which I’ll have spent more on this car in a couple months than I’ve spent on the allroad in two years. Granted a lot of these issues were preexisting.
If we keep it, maybe a muffler. Tires for sure. Might need wheels.
And just started tracking a possible oil consumption issue.
The Audi hasn’t been bad, and after a brief journey in the desert I have an Indy shop who knows what they’re doing and doesn’t overcharge.
