Nice MB on the cheap (and with a mechanic in on the plan).
I'm returning my TDI and have narrowed down my replacement wagon to a 2014 BMW 328 wagon or an Allroad. I dove the 328 and liked it a lot but my question is with snow tires on both cars which is better in deep snow and frozen roads?

6 of one, half dozen of another. The Allroad might have more clearance but that's gonna be the only difference.
Weight, tires, and clearance will affect snow and ice handling the most.Quote:

BMW has more RWD bias in the system for easier donuts. My e91 with snows is really solid until it runs out of clearance, but requires runflats so tire options are limited.
They both work very well. I have a 2011 328 wagon, and a golf with Haldex 4, and have a friend with the Allroad. Maybe a very slight nod to the Allroad for the very slight extra bit of clearance. Both the VW/Audi and the BMW work very well. The systems that operates the AWD are very sophisticated in both. I would choose based on the car and it's ability to fill your needs, not on the AWD systems.
But we're buying another BMW.

Did that in mine. Can't recall the year but dumped snow on Xmas. Driving back home from Syracuse back to NJ. They actually closed interstate 80 at Wilkes Barre/Scranton and kicked us off the highway. The entire exit ramp was like that above video. Hammer down and hold on. She did admirably 2001 a4 1.8t. No snows.Quote:

I had a moment like that when I was back home visiting family for Christmas one year and was making the drive up to Holiday Valley for a day of skiing. Torsen equipped Audi's are also rear biased, 60/40 IIIRC. Big difference from the Haldex equipped models (TT, A3). My torsen A4 can be steered pretty effectively with the skinny pedal when conditions are right.
I didn't want to stop I could've made it home. Was only like 2 hours more. I had made it past the worst part. Was ahead of the storm, but they literally had state police pushing you off the highways . No biggie hotel room and nearest bar. Nice! My wife has the same wagon but in black. Just hit 62k. Only complaint is the turbo lag. But once it spools up it really pulls. Have a great mechanic nearby and plan to keep it for at least another 10 years.Quote:

I've driven no problem on unplowed roads in NJ last winter. 8-10" with deeper drifts. 2012 A4 Avant. Crappy all season tires. Car plowed through no problem.
With that said I may be selling it asap!
140k on mine and trust me the turbo lag in Saabs is much better than Audi or subbie imho. Most forums non Saab turbo owners are jealous.Quote:

I can tow a 4x8 or 5x8 uhaul trailer with mine according to the uhaul website. NJ to MT for $305. How much is my car going to hate that?
