Way back when I was still in school one of my history classes had a component on regional conflicts in the Middle East and the Balkans. One of the theories I still remember is that a primary cause of continuing conflict is childcare being provided by grandparents (primarily grandmothers). The parents of whatever faction go out and try to make a living, probably working with members of whatever opposing side/religion/ethnic group with no issues. Yet grandma is at home looking after little Johnny filling their heads with stories of the evil Jews/Arabs/Serb/Croat/Armenian transgressions of the past.Quote:

But you don’t see any protestor suggesting that, or anyone in the Arab world, because they don’t really want peace, they want Israel.
That's simply not true. There are many statements from Arab and Muslim countries condemning the Hamas attacks and calling for peace.
Using Palestinians as pawns is true for some, certainly in the case of Iran, but most leaders in Muslim countries are no longer gratuitously antisemitic. They're pragmatic. They need to signal alliance with the worst groups in their populations, who are, because they lack democratic legitimacy. Like Israel, a lot of these countries are weary of the Palestinian issue. All the same they can't sit by and allow America and Israel to boss other Arabs around and treat them like pawns because of their country's own recent past when it happened to them.
Without agreeing with it, folks need to see the large angry crowds and at least be aware of the zeitgeist.

While universal condemnation of Hamas would be welcome, this map shows Syria, Iraq, Qatar & Iran are the main dead enders in the Middle East. Other countries may not support Israel, but it's less ideological and more out of self interest. Russia & China, for example, see this conflict as an opportunity to further their own interests (while cynically calling for peace) but they don't categorically deny Israel the right to exist.
