2017 Praxis Skis Info and Resource Thread

I quite like almost all the new topsheet graphics. I ended up choosing "dino" for one of my pairs. Almost took the grim for another, but thought it might come across as bad juju with some touring partners. Thought it would look really awesome on a veneer as well. "Wolf" came really close as well but ended up going with Jamaican Lion for the second pair.
Shrooms, Elevate, final frontier, mountain spring, trees, skull island also all really cool looking. Wasn't a fan of "nukin" but I'm sure it'll be someone's cup of tea.

My everyday/travel ski is a 193 MVP with 3+ flex and heavy core. Also owned, and sold, a 4 flex 193 MVP with heavy core. I kept the 3+ because it's a more friendly flex for my (lack of) style.

I must be in the minority - carbon is awesome. I have the 184 Rx in enduro with carbon, #4, and maple ambrosia and now have one day on the 182 9Ds, heavy with carbon, birch veneer, and #4 (mounted -1 from the dimple).

First impressions of 9D: it has been a long time since I’ve ridden skis this skinny, but the conditions were perfect for them and they were a fuckin’ blast.

Conditions = hadn’t snowed since Tuesday, stayed cold so snow was firm but pleasantly dry (very few icy spots). There had been a few crazy windy days (Thurs. and Fri) — Taku winds if you’ve been to SE AK. Groomers and bumps were very fun and easy; wind scoured areas were very variable and challenging.

Handflexing, the 9Ds are fairly stiff. Skiing, I found them quick to turn, super easy to ride, hold an edge exceptionally well, and very stable, esp. for their size. IOW, they carved well and handled our mini bumps well. For skinny skis, I’m not a fan of substantial rocker, esp. with a lot of tip/tail height. Seems to me that for the conditions one would want a 90 mm, you’d sacrifice a lot with rocker and gain a little.

I’m 5’10”, 190 lb, with 3 rugrats in elementary school, I spend most of my time coaxing and chasing them, and a pinch of time touring for turns. I would definitely tour with the 9Ds through the spring. I also tend to prefer skis (or mount locations) in the -7 to -10 range.

I would also love to compare them to 9D8s with the identical core/veneer/stiffness, someday . . .

I’m still choosing a touring ski. 105mm underfoot +/- moustache profile.

Didn’t get enough interest in a 184 BC to get keith to build it.

So, since the mvp is now 109 underfoot, my choices:

183 mvp
184 skinny RX
182 fat yeti

Could still do 180 BC as well. If anyone else has thoughts here, lemme know. I’ve emailed keith, but I suspect so has everyone else. Leaning mvp. If i don’t like them in the BC, it looks like a fun inbounds Kartel competitor.

3+, ambrosia, enduro

Torn between lion and tattoo. Or wolf? Or a different new one.

These decisions do tend to erode my time a bit. Bummed the veneers aren’t free this year.

Those all seem like very different ski choices. How do you like to pivot and finish your turns? Are you thinking about this for "who knows" kind of PNW resort snow conditions?

Here's my on-paper take of your choices, also based on what I know from physically handling, but not ever skiing, the MVP and Yeti.

MVP has a lot of tail rocker and more of a pintail design than RX. Probably more versatile, more loose in all kinds of funky snow conditions, and less charger than the other two. More center mounted than the other two, if you like to ski like that inbounds or out of bounds.

Skinny RX has most traditional sidecut shape and the least tail rocker of all 3, I bet it skis something like a damper (now that it's carbon instead of titanium) and more powerful Cochise.

Fat Yeti is interesting ... the sidecut gets pushed back toward the tail most of all 3 skis, so you have that early rise nose with gentle reverse sidecut that rises really well for 104-underfoot. If you nail the flex for your weight and style, I bet it ends up being like a BC just with a slightly longer apparent tail and more edge bite ... probably more powerful and less jibby than the BC.

I don't know how big you are ... but 180 BC, even in stiff flex, is a seriously short ski. I'm 5' 8" 135 lbs, ski in the backseat a lot (so I have problems with super long and stiff tailed skis) and that size feels perfect for me.

Is there a way to see what various graphics look like over the veneers? Feel like there should be but I just spent some time fighting with the website and couldn't figure it out..

Best to just peruse on here, website, and Praxis for pictures of past graphics on Veneer and infer from there

Good stuff Schralph! Think a fat yeti sounds like a dope bc rig! Good call Chx! I've always really really (and still do) wanted a MVP but in your req enviro I'd go fat Yeti for sure. Just my 2 cents.

Helpful. I appreciate it. I'm 6', 170#, and I thought the 187 GPO was just right for me for pow touring. For daily/longer tours, I could go a little shorter than that, but I don't want to try to GS turn down a cornfield and overpower the ski. The MVP is super stable in my experience and quite versatile. Fat yeti is intriguing, but overall I'd say the +10/-10 experiments have more misses than hits. So while on paper, that looks like arguably the best touring shape (I don't jib in the BC - props to those that do), it also looks like the bigger risk...

Fun thought experiments though...

Huh? MVP has a 6 mm narrower tail than tip. RX has a 13 mm narrower tail than tip.

MVP has more taper and rocker, sure, but RX is more of a pintail. Unless I'm missing something...?

Now I'm debating the 187 MVP vs 184 RX in enduro+carbon w. veneer as a mid-winter touring ski, ideally a more-progressively mounted and very slightly looser replacement for my current 0G 108.

Yeah, I agree. It's been mentioned that there's a Praxis Facebook page with additional photos of completed veneers. Definitely just a sample though.

And damn, there are a lot of new graphics, and even some hippie stuff to spruce up the bases.

Someone said this earlier, but the less involved the graphics, the more the wood veneer comes through. That said, I personally think things tops like Screaming Bear, Bucks Beach, Max, etc. come out looking very sweet on veneers.

Abonimal snowman would be a cool veneer topsheet.

That Dino graphic on a veneer will be tasteful, high contrast, and quite steezy. A man can try to be financially responsible but damn praxis is making it hard

Totally agree with chx on the learyness on going +/- 10 but I feel like the Yeti is a great experiment as well as the MVP! I've slightly suggested a skinny RX to a couple folks, but when a ski has that kind of accolades it's pretty tough to imagine it being any better than something designed to ski smaller... I am totally trying to walk myself off the skinny MVP plank, Piste Jib is just too damn short for me and as much as I adore the Concept for daily duties this season has me wanting a more locked in carver that will ski slush and bumps way better... I don't fucking know, 98 doesn't seem progressive enuff for my tastes

Edit to say; Think the fat MVP would be a sick pow ski for someone with the chops to really do something with it!!

My older-ish MVPs (2-4 Years appx) measure 190.5cm straight pull

Love them, thanks again main. I Previously owned 184s at -1, so I went -.75 on these and they felt very familiar, just bigger and faster and heavier. They’re quite maneuverable and damp, at the expense of some rebound in the turn.

I face it, they absurdly overlap with The 193 MVPs I’ve got, but those at least have a frame binding on them for differentiating purposes. MVP is a little more springy / less damp but equally loose. I find both skis will carve and slarve, ski from center for quick turns or get on the shovels and bend them into carves. The Dev may plow and slither thru chop/ mostly soft variable crud better, but the MVP is quite damp and good at that too. I can ski both faster and still feel like I’m having fun than I could with 184 Head Monster 108s, so I sold those. I prefer to try and ski what the mountain gives me to make turns vs dedicated radius arcs.

Any medium-sized humans on 194 Quixotes? I'm 6', 190#. Previously been on 190 Bibbys, 187 Protests, 187 MVPs (no me gusto), 190 BCs, etc.

Thinking long-term about 194 Quixotes with Shifts for a dream days, heli, and travel ski. I read somewhere that Alto uses 188s for trees, technical terrain, and 194s for open faces. I do not, however, ski like Tabke. Probably would just go stock - 4 flex with veneer.

I also read that Quixotes are kinda between RX (traditional big mountain ski) and the GPO (new-school big mountain). That sounds perfect. (But... a 196 Protest sounds perfect too haha...)
