It's not an audi thank god. So I think you just gotta pull the fan and radiator makes it a bit easier. But there is a fair amount of engine disassembly required, vanos, tensioners, cam chains, etc... And a lot of while you are in there parts that make it a pretty big job. I looked for a while for an e39 540i, but a pre requisite was that they have a record of the chain and guides being done, and only one did, but the car had lots of other issues, including the fact that it was an automatic. Every other one I looked at needed to have it done, and I think was the impetus for selling.
Drove my 540i up to solitude today, it was pretty fun. I like to put my foot into it.
