ON3P SKIS Discussion

The second one plus BG’s and a big day ski like a Cease and Desist or Spur. I’ve been amazed by the BG so I think you are doing urself a disservice not including those regardless.

I’ve also been impressed with my Woods 116 but honestly think I would grab the Billy Goat if it was a Fresh day or a weird snow day or heavy day.

I’m really impressed for a wide ski the Woods groomer performance. They are super solid underfoot and feel really great goin fast. Pretty quick edge to edge also.

The Wrens just seem to go hard. Less versatile as the Woods imo but I’ve really enjoyed the reliability on a fall line go fast day.

I like having all three for options in my quiver but it is sorta ridiculous the rad overlap they all have in a good way. I think it’s tough to peg a quiver as ideal with so many great options out there. I’ve learned to embrace the overlap and tap into each skis ability to excel and adapt.

Those 98s are a fun ski. Find them to ski big for their dimensions - in a good way. Can’t go wrong with that cargo!

For Alta/Bird I'd personally go with the first one, and wouldn't rule out the Cease and Desists instead of the Billygoats. Why not go big if you ski somewhere that legitimately gets big dumps? I have wren 96s and they rule but they do like to ski fast and hard all the time. They aren't difficult to ski, but they really want to chew up vertical. I think the Woodsman 108 would be a bit more versatile as a daily driver than the wren 108s, and better for taking air off all the various hits at Alta. I should be back at Alta next winter, and will be rocking Wren 96, Deathwish, and (hopefully) Cease and Desists as my three ski inbound quiver.

I’ll be back in Seattle in a few days and my 184 Wren 114’s have Demo binders on em. I find them way more versatile than popular legend suggests, and would like some agreeing acolytes - message me if interested in trying.

Returned the Wren 108 to Japan after three years and finally got to let it go free in some japow again.

this one sounds more my speed, ymmv

i DD a K108 due to local conditions and the awesome versatility, that said if the woodsman was availible when i bount my K's i'd have probably gone that route.

-98 wren/98 fischer ranger
-108 Kartel
-118 BG

I hear ya, my quiver used to be 7 skis deep. Now I’m lucky to ski 30 days in a season, so the quiver is thinning

^^^ Wren 108 is my favorite ski, I find myself grabbing them more than anything else these days. I also ski really fast and the Wren is so stable... like it's finally happy let loose.
For what is worth.... I run DPS 112 , JJ's, Wren 108 and older Tycoon 98s

I’ve gotten caught up in that remorse but I reassure myself there will be a day and the flip usually isn’t worth the effort, tho it can be enjoyable.

The mini me should be renting books outta the library soon so that helps to justify a ton of skis on the wall. So much good shit out there to try.......

An interesting observation, and I think I know what you're getting at. I just recently re-started skiing those Wren 98s (184) last week and find that I enjoy them more than all of my other skis in anything other than 6+" of chop or the deep stuff. In those conditions, I do notice the 184 length and wished that they were longer. Today I skied them against my 108 Wrens (189 and disguised as Steeples in the above pic), in two-day-old freshies, and the 98s were way more fun and easier for me to ski. Gonna try this again tomorrow, but reverse the order that I ski each.

Around 95mm underfoot seems to be my sweet spot for most conditions . I already tried the Woodsman 98, but that experience was painful- That ski made no sense to me at all and I was flailing pretty badly on 'em. Now, I'm contemplating next year's Wren 96 Ti, but need to decide on length. 184 is mostly fine, but they feel short on certain occasions, as mentioned above. Plus I'm thinking about putting my 108 Wrens to bed for the rest of the season. I find that I'm liking that ski less and less unless there's 6+ inches of fresh. I guess I'm hoping for would to be to ski the new Wren 96s in anything and everything, until it's too deep and them reach for the Billy Goats (el Goatarinos).

Am I a high maintenance bitch, or what?

W98 is a polarizing ski, it seems. I didn't love mine, although I can't rule out the possibility that there was something funky going on with them, tune-wise. Tune aside, I still didn't gel with the flex pattern.

Fwiw, this was a proto serial number, so perhaps not quite the same as what eventually hit the market. If the flex was indicative of all wren 98s, I would say it's way too soft or inconsistent for fatties. I'd be curious to get back on a pair some day and reevaluate.

Fwiw, the blister guys seemed to think that the last iteration wren98 was a little too soft, and the wren96 was a big improvement in flex pattern

Makes sense....my Wren 98s are great in bumps. Very easy to navigate these puppies through tight turns.

I have both the Wren 98 and 108 in a 189 length and have probably over a 100+ days on my 98s and would not consider them “softish” (this is the first time I ever have heard/read this) It is not demanding at all but still can get after it and I have yet to find a weakness on it... For me it is extremely versatile and it never lets me down... I am 6’4” and 205ish and could not imagine it ever out of my quiver...

Viva, interested to hear more on your woodsman98 experience. Contemplating that for low snow ski in pnw. Everything else I've seen looks very promising but those have all been the wider platforms.

I just couldn't ski 'em on anything hard. I took them to the shop on the mountain to retune the edges for a more aggressive bevel and that helped, but I couldn't stay centered and couldn't turn (or stop) on groomers without seriously muscling them. Could ski 'em fine in looser snow, but by then I was a bit apprehensive and wasn't in a position to really evaluate them.

In all likelihood, the geometry / mount point of the Woodsman is beyond what I'm used to and, maybe, doesn't suit my personality when skiing. They sure were purty, though.

i feel this way about my wren98 these days, they certainly haven't got the love they need this season but the K's have been spot on for me given the fortunate conditions i've had so far

quasai a/b between the two over a couple days proved the wren platform expects more acceptance to the valley floor in all conditions

having never skied a woods, my only guess based on feedback here would suggest a skier would have a forward body position with a looser feel in the tails meaning tighter terrain would be more manageable than a wren

all my on3p skis do prefer softer snow, firm days require piste edges and clump piles on groomers

Yes you have heard it! From me, last time I mentioned it a few years back. We concluded 184s were the wrong length for my 220lb heft and that I should try someone's 189s.

Never got around to that, but wouldn't be opposed.

Mattig, I totally believe you I just don’t remember it being brought up... I will be at Bach in April for my end of year ski trip and will probably have my ON3P quiver with me (Wren + Supergoats makes a great travel quiver)... I know you make it to Bach throughout the season and would love to make some turns with you... You would be more than welcome to try whatever I bring in big boy size...
