Since you are stoked and "up for a challenge", then they won't "suck" for you like your friends say. Still, they might not be the best match for you. I don't know.
You'll get on top of the Squads and be really stoked for powerful skiing in the right conditions, but Squads are stiff, so you gotta muscle them to turn tighter than their 34m radius. So there will plenty of other days when you'll get tired of forcing your Squads into tight turns and say "maybe I should have ridden my im88's today". If your goal is to avoid your im88's, then go for Squads and swap the im88's for something cheap/used that you're more stoked about. Otherwise, forget the stiff-ass Squads and get a more watered down everyday ski (new Goats, 186 LPs)---then you never really need to ski the im88's anyway.
Still on the fence? I heard Squad mount line is pretty far back (necessary to keep a stiff tip floating up in pow). Consider mounting Squads slightly forward (maybe +1cm?). Still takes muscle to bend them into tighter arcs, but FW mount reduces swing weight when unweighted or in the air (tight bumps/jump turns on steeps), and reduces pivot resistance from the edges while in contact with the surface (forcing/skidding tighter turns). This increases tip dive in pow, but not for lucky you---you have Lotus 138's on floater days.
Best is to demo if you can. Squaw Valley Sport Shop is steps from KT, so you can demo 4-5 pairs at the one-day rate if you're quick about it.
