Maggot qualifications?

As far as gear swap goes, the seller can sell to whoever he'd like and I definitely think its fair game for him to give preference to established board members. But I think it is stupid to try and put a limit on any other part of the board.

Sure if you wanna keep a stash's location secret be chill about it, but I'm not laying down any tracks by looking at it. What I am doing is seeing people having fun on the snow. Seeing, sharing, and communicating with other people who have a passion for what they do is what this place is about. You don't need to meet someone, or get a certain post count to do that.

I say anyone who loves the mountains and loves the snow has a maggot in them. The day they play some part in the sharing of that passion the maggot becomes exposed. I don't think they need to be given the title by some whack on the internet.

Or all of them. Or some, but definitely not others. Whatever the case, there should definitely be a way on this board to discriminate against people, that’s for sure.

Didn't read through the whole thing but, here's my thoughts.

I consider myself a Maggot, even though I live about as far away from skiing as anyone on here ('cept Hook- he is 2 hours south of me). Why do I think of myself as such, especially when I fish a lot more than ski these days? I'll tell you.

1. I have met and skied with several maggots across the country, and they have showed me their mountains.

2. I have eaten shit and scared myself pretty good with some of those maggots.

3. I constantly think of life as a possible TR. Painting the house TR, building my new deck TR, fly fishing TR(still in the works- just need to catch something yet this year), going to buy my Jeep TR(one of the few I have actually completed), etc.

(edit)4. I still have an open invite to any mag that comes to Tampa/St.Pete for some backcountry flats fishing. Can't promise bites, but I can promise some great scenery and good times. It is the least I can do to repay those mags that have toted my ass around their mountains.

If you think like that, then I think you are a maggot.

The failsafe- have everyone post a picture of themsleves right now. The ones that come up rexes are not true participants here.

I've been working on a particularly boring assignment that is for a course that I'm taking in order to get my Master's but I'm constantly being distracted by post on TGR which are far more entertaining :) Not sure which one is worse: American Idol or this assigment on "Performances of Understanding". :rolleyes:

yup. there's one major qualification - a surplus of testosterone and a raging desire to insult.

I would just like to say that I have only met a few maggots, all of which were fun to ski with and seemed like good people. As of three years ago my quiver consisted of 177 rossi gs skis and 160 rossi slalom skis (which I thought would be good in powder because they had so much sidecut they were almost fat) and I had never tried anything over 80mm underfoot. I have also never posted a single TR, and I'm a newb. Oh, I'm also a gaper.

But...

I have sold things on gear swap for less then I probably could have gotten elsewhere, I know the proper use of :fmicon:, I would readily lend any knowledge or expertise I have if someone asked for advice on here, and I am aware of the fact that I am not the most extreme skier on this forrum even if I am the most extreme skier in my office.

I would say if someone approaches you and askes for change for a nickel, then you are probably a maggot.

Im probably far from a maggot status, whatever that means, but Id like to think Ive contributed a little bit and dont plan on leaving anytime soon. Having said that, my first post was to nab a pair of 180 explosivs with 10 days on them for 300$. I lurked for a good month before even registering and posting for those skis the same day. Anyway, I think its hard to draw a line beforehand as to who can and cannot participate in Gear Swap based on the amount of posts or contributions.

You might as well call TGR, Tau Gamma Rho, since youll be preemptively judging someone much like a frat would do if someone doesnt wear American Eagle or whatever that bullshit is. One of the great things is that anyone can participate in this forum, granted they dont like markers :tongue:

I do however see your point.
Maybe let them buy once, and then let them contribute to earn their place?
Perhaps some sort of rating system like ebay?

This might be a little presumptious for a newb like me, but I would venture that one thing that would make you NOT a maggot is being a prick to people on here for no good reason.

funny how that works out, some Fletch always beats me to a message board.

Difficult to define for sure. I had like 900 posts on Powdermag in like 5 months, but I CERTAINLY wasn't a maggot (I didn't even know the history behind it all or what a finger moustache was or what change for a nickel meant). I have like 1300 posts now, and like 50 of those (maybe) were worth anything.

Ya, people know who I am, but I don't think I can say I am a valuable contributor to the board. I ask a lot more questions than I provide answers, and I see a lot more pictures than I post.

But I would probably rather ski with "maggots" than anybody else because I feed off how stoked they are on the hill (just as I am), so that might make me a maggot, I dont know.

I'd say purposeful attendance of a mini or summit and purposeful association with people from this board is about the only surefire way to distinguish. It's easier to say "ya, that guy qualifies because he has posted a shitload of super-sweet pictures and helps out everybody" than "he doesn't qualify because he only has 23 posts."

Bottom line is that it's up to the seller. I would not encourage giving away deals to anybody because that sorta messes up the economics of the place, and I would say that in order to reap the benefits of a super-cheap deal for good gear, you should probably contribute SOMETHING, but there's no way to quantify that something.

Just contribute whatever you have. That's what I do... I just don't have much to contribute (yet ;) )
