    Maggot qualifications?

I think it's lame that lurkers can just go into gear swap, nab good deals and bail.
If there's low interest in an item and they're helping out a maggot, that's one thing....but not contributing to the community and at the same time taking advantage of it doesn't seem cool to me.

Soooo, what makes us a maggot? Is it just someone who posts here once, or is it someone that becomes part of this community?

I think there needs to be some sort of criteria standard to be met before someone can obtain maggot status. Thoughts?

For starters, I think you have to be able to ski or ride pretty well.

    Really?

Your point makes sense, but how would someone selling gear go about simply saying "no" to someone with only a few posts? I guess maybe a general rule could in gearswap could be that the seller has priority to choose, but that pretty much kills the whole "dibs" thing....

As a longtime lurker, I tend to agree on a gut level. I already get far more out of the maggot community (through TRs, great info, funny stories, etc.) than I give, and that's without going into gear swap and getting a sweet deal on an LS9000.

On a more intellectual (though realisitic, in this case!) level, a seller is perfectly aware of a potential buyer's "community" credentials, so the market is efficient in that regard. Because of PM's, it's not like there's any real way to regulate transactions on gear swap if the seller is intent to unload their wares. By limiting gear swap to board members with a certain number of posts (for example), thus dramatically constraining the number of potential buyers, my sense is that many people would forego the board in favor of other outlets when attempting to sell many of the best items.

I don't know if I even qualify as a true maggette myself yet.... but I think if you post enough, contribute enough, so that people on the board pretty much know who you are, then you're a maggot. Obviously someone coming in here to buy shit with no contribution is not a maggot. Also, I think true maggots do what they can to help one another out.... a true part of a kick-ass community.

Oh, and BTW, all of you who hate moguls: it's b/c you just don't know how to ski them right! Anyone can ski pow. It takes years to learn to rip in the bumps!

Well, what if all shops gave bro deals to the public?

Is everyone in the world one mouse click away from being a maggot, or does it take participation?

I hear ya, but I think it goes against the "Welcome Wagon" to start to create some sort of requirements.

If you don't want a newbie gear swap poacher to buy your kit then don't sell it to them. Gear swap is a good thing for both buyers and sellers, though ebay seems to make more sense.

I hear you, but I only use gear swap as a good example. How about lurkers reading TR's and poaching those areas, never to give back to the stoke here?

    D Lemma

oh the D Lemma. Say something clever about hating moguls or contribute to the thread ... hmmm. I do so hate moguls.
But ... Blurred has a point here. I am not sure how one would enforce "qualifications" and outwardly the concept seems to go against what this loose community is all about. Maybe if we just self regulate by being discerning in who we choose to sell to in gear swap the issue could be resolved. Good point there Blurred.

Even the Supreme Court has trouble defining maggots:

"I shall not today attempt further to define....and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it" -Justice Potter Stewart (Jacobellis, 1964)
