Just what mountain town are you talking about? Boulder is in the flatlands (it's just against the mountains) with a population of 100k - not exactly what I think of as a mountain town (course, wouldn't consider slummit a mountain town either).

Kinda funny, tho'. Originally published in a magazine (Outside) located in a city that makes Boulder look like Columbus (Santa Fe).

Damn, can't anyone grasp that this guy is is being fasicious? The only way to do that is to grab something that somewhat rings true & expand it to ridiculous proportions.

I've lived in Boulder for 13 years, & don't see myself moving anytime soon.Everyplace has it's issues & can be mean ,heartless ,& cruel.

Yes, you can also say things like this place has more hot ass than a rump roast cook off,& can pontificate about all the ones & zeros,but the basic fact remains,this a great place to live ,that's why people come here.

I guess some folks need a more regular eye exam!

Stuff like this just means you hang out at The Mountain Sun too much. I see many pretty people every day in Boulder, and sometimes they happen to be the #1 ranked person at whatever activity/sport they do.
I've loved moving up from Denver some time last year as I was commuting in for work. It's funny how much people are like, Boulder is this, Boulder is that, but Boulder, like anywhere else, is whatever the fuck you make it. My buddies and I spout off about our skiing and snowboarding endeavors every chance we get (too ourselves and other friends) but none of us are anything special. It's really just what we like to do, do shit, then talk about. By no means have I ever had anyone here look at me while I was talking about skiing or Mtn. Biking and tell me they were the best ever...

There are a lot of truthes to that rant though, and I found it funny as hell, as I read it mainly tongue in cheek...

I'll give people their qualms about the real weirdos here too, including the left as hell, the prairie dog brigade, etc....

That's funny... I moved here from Charlotte- and I'd say I enjoy the girls here in CO a lot more. Of course, I'm one of those guys who like fit, good looking girls instead of pretty, "healthy" southern-fried girls who want to get married at their daddy's church when they're 20 and have kids when they turn 21.

Yeah I reside in Boulder for the time being and I feel what many of you say about the people here...BUT what I found is there is almost every type of person here, so you can hang out with the hippies or the yippies or the 'really tan white kids' or anyone you wish. Personally I enjoy it.

And YES, IMHO the women here are somthing else....

Sorry by something else I mean there is an abundance of beautiful women in this town

I don't consider it a mountain town in that it is on a mountain, but more for the fact that it has lots of people who come there to do things in the mountains (climbers, skiers, etc.). I live in Mammoth, and there are lots of the people like the ones described in the story out here.

And to point out the obvious, the author of the boulder bashing piece still lives here and doesn't plan on living, umm, leaving.

I used to live in breck, which yes, I consider a mountain town, and I chose boulder first for grad school and second cuz though its not a mountain town, its as close a compromise as you can get while having a payin job and other city type amenities, and you can still be on a hike by yourself in the woods in 5 mintues.

If you chose it for Grad school, then that's fine, if you were compromising then where is the snow? I'd rather ski than hike, although I spend most of my time hiking (skining) up hill. There are lots of Colleges and Universities in the West, IN mountain towns (and yes you can actually find a job if you're willing to look). What "city type amenities" are important? I can only think of a few, because most amentities are wants, not needs.

the snow is 1 - 1.5 hours away. (30 min for eldora) and we can come back down and bbq.

there are no grad schools in mtn towns in the west that I know of. and SLC is obviously the best for access, but I think I'd rather stick myself in the eye with forks than be constantly subjected to SLC culture.

amenities are things like farmers market, live music with good bands, bookstores, coffee shops and restaurants that stay open past 8pm, a demographic other than 22 year old transients and 38 year old divorcees, cheaper food and gas, broncos and rockies games, bbqs w/o hoodies and mittens in july, biking around town (ok ok the boat, CB and jackson have got us beat), mail delivery, off the top of my head.

of course there are good jobs in mtn towns, just not many is alls I'm sayin. I loved livin in a mtn town, I got out cuz I made a choice, and who knows maybe one day I'll go back.

SLC doesn't have too bad of a culture, you should check out their mayor. He's sure bucking the trend.

Do you want to ski or do you want amenities? 'Cause that drive from anywhere along the Front Range up to the high country is a nightmare. Much more dangerous than avalanches on Berthoud. I think I'd rather live in Co. Sp. and sneak up to the mountains the back way, but I doubt I'd ever move back to that side of The Divide again.

Meh. the drive's not that bad. There are bad days a year fo sho, but mostly all right if you play your timing right.

montana state does have grad programs, just not the one I did (JD).

And flagstaff is more of a mountain town with skiing? news to me.

And if Rocky Anderson and I could drink a few beers and hit alta, that would be great. I know there are cool folks in SLC. Maybe its cool to be in the minority, but hey, in the people's republic its nice when the arguments are only over what level of protection we should give our land and water.

I want my cake. I want homes everywhere and a budget that doesn't matter.
but, here's the most important part. I've made my friends and buddies in boulder, and so what's the point of heading to another part of the rockies to start over?
