The reason they have these events in arenas instead of convention centers is twofold: The media and the media.
It's not a convention in the traditional sense - no booths, no product demonstrations - it's basically one biiiiig photo-op, or kinda like a concert. There's a big stage where the speeches are made, then on the floor and in the lower stands is where the delegates gather around their little state markers and cheer and wave those stupid little hats, then make announcements that surprise no one. Above and around this circus are the camera risers and liveshot positions which bring this highly important :rolleyes: step in the electoral process into your living rooms. (I apologise for my small part in this)
You need an arena for the sightlines. A convention center floor, no matter how big - is FLAT. That's why the RNC convention is in MSG, not the Javitz center.
