I doubt that MAC group warning applied to AK. For one thing, there are hardly ever caterers there. In my day (probably similar now), you brought 3 days of MREs or pre-packaged foods (the jumpers put together their own) with you on IA (initial attack), then you got ‘fresh food boxes’ every three days with things like steaks, ham, hot dogs, veggies, soups, cereals, bread, pb&j, fruit, etc. All cooked over campfires, sometimes by the ‘camp bitch’ that stayed in to cook, make camp livable, protect the food, etc.

Before they ditched LA and moved way, way north last fall, my kid’s family lived off of Mulholland at the top of Laurel Canyon. Terrifying from my ‘when this burns…’ POV.

Well, now we’re getting smoke from BC fires in Central OR again. Just read of one near Vernon (White Rock Lake?) that was blowing up. Vibes to the el hefe clan

Yeah it's nasty but it is 2km across the lake at least.

Watching the tube this evening there was a new evacuation order for the Dixie Fire for an area south of the southern edge of the fire--a direction in which the fire hadn't been spreading significantly until now.
Winds today down our way varied from calm to westerly to easterly and back to calm.

Not sure what forestry techs make but you could apply with blm for some of their seasonal jobs. Med and fire certs play well for applying. blm was hiring drivers for $28/hr. last time I looked five years ago. Not sure what forestry techs make but interagency migration isn't too difficult if you want to do something else.

Maybe also keep your eye out for pathways positions. They are for students and can be extended while in school, etc. They can also transition you to a FT, permanent positions non-competitively when you graduate etc. Just throwing that out there for thought. Not that would “recommend” working for the feds.. The entry level jobs in most occupations pay too little these days. If you ever have questions, let me know.

If your college education lines up with working for a federal agency, it might make sense to get into the pathways program, but only if you can line up a career ladder that gets you to the GS-11 level fairly quickly. Otherwise I would recommend finding a summer position with a company doing work in your field of education and future career goals.

Also, if you do apply for fire jobs, try to find somewhere that offers employee housing. You will save a ton. Also, realize you will probably need to have an application in by Christmas to be hired.
