Maybe AWD is bad for all those reasons posted above but since I got my first car with AWD, I'm not going back. No doubt driving uphill on snow covered roads, it really helps. Our driveway is probably the steepest thing I drive regularly. Sucks to have to park at the bottom, and haul the families shit uphill, like 10 trips.
AWD is great, and I’m not going back either.

Momentum, planning ahead, and driving skill will compensate for 2WD in a lot of situations. Low speed stuff without room for momentum can be a bitch, though, and parking lots and driveways are actually two of my favorite places to have the option to drive all four wheels.Quote:

I've had Falken Wildpeak AT3W on my Ranger and while it was pretty good in snow and ice for AT tire, the thread life in summer wasn't great. Last winter I switched to Blizzaks and it's been way more comfortable and predictable. For the rest of the year I have a regular Nitto Terra Grappler G2 which gets better mileage and better thread wear.Quote:

True story: an old acquaintance ran un underground shop out of his garage. He had a lift and a tire machine, so along with fixing cars, he'd install tires that customers had purchased online. So one night after hours he's down at the local tire chain adding tires to their scrap pile, and the cops show up. But here's the twist: they thought he was taking the tires. tire stores will often have used take offs for whatever reason, maybe they have to replace both tires on an axle when one fails on warranty, or a near newtires on rims for a popular model are really easy to resell so the dealer will take them on trade when the customer buys a new vehical
I don't know if there are disposal fees on a used product its kind of a moot point to me if it get me out of a jam or saves assloads of money but you seem worried about paying tire disposal and use that as your reason not to buy snow tires

But you do learn how to drive on AS's and realize that owning a dedicated winter tire for your vehicle when you are constantly driving on icy and hard compact snow is preferable for your winter driving anxiety to have a tire that actually is designed for such conditions.
