:D
I mean, it's hardly a heat wave here - two days is no "wave" in my book.
And now we've got a thunderstorm... perhaps the monsoon is revving up? That would be nice.

Still a hard no from me. If a land manager decides to close land because the actions of one may endanger public safety or the resource itself, then....maybe. Otherwise, educate about the dangers and the possibility of a delayed rescue and let them go at it. I find it strange that I have to make this counterpoint on a message board for outdoor sports.
The internet says El Niño is gonna make this a hot one, alarmingly so in some places. I’m gonna regret saying this, but it’s been relatively mild here so far. I mean it’s hot and humid, but could be worse. Even so, A/C has been going steady since May. 72 during the day, and 70 at night thanks to a secret thermostat schedule that kicks in after everyone is in bed.
Wifey goes to bed in pajama pants and a shirt at 10 with a nice toasty 75 degrees and she uses 3 blankets (one of them a heavy comforter). At 11 programmed thermostat goes to 73, midnight to 72, 1am to 69 degrees. Then I go to bed and sleep under the sheet in nothing but my panties.
6am back to 75 and she never knows…..
100 year old house with a sub-grade basement. With the thermostat set at 75 the upstairs is 78ish, main level is 75 and basement is 68. We sleep on a cheap memory foam mattress on the concrete floor of the basement this time of year.

My people! Pretty disappointed in myself for not setting the nighttime temp to 69, though. Gonna go remedy that.
One aspect of the recreation in the summer vs our backcountry fun in avy terrain is that we are a bit better at self regulation. It started with ski touring and now with sledders. Those that know and are equipped to deal with the hazard (and the consequences) have come leaps and bounds over the last 30yrs. The summer general public crowd has no such tight circle of enthusiasts to educate and group monitor the situation. Which is a big deal for SAR.
Our winter operation are now mostly broken bones and lost (downed machine) sledders; way fewer fatalities than even a decade ago (granted it does swing year over year). Summer is filled with unprepared folk not knowing where they are, wholly unprepared (flip flops and no gear heading for a day hike into the alpine, thunderheads building), etc.
Not saying closing the woods here - this is Canada and there is just too much land to effectively close except in the worst situations (I.e wildfire), but the recreating public over each season and rec activity are entirely different populations, and I can see how popular trails in the US could be closed for any number of public safety situations.
$10,000 is 1% of the value on a $1m house. That goes to fire fighters, police, schools, roads, trash, public transportation and almost everything else done by the local government. 1% is the national average.[/QUOTE]
$10k is $833 a month, not $1300.
National average is 1.1% of assessed value which is usually lower than actual value, most places significantly lower.
Sure, a 2/1 is worth $1.6 million of assessed value in some places, but it’s pretty rarified air.
I’m grateful my property taxes are no where near that expensive and I still get fire fighters, police, schools, the whole shebang!
I told you people.
68F indoors at 10:20 am.
It was 65F indoors at 7 am after leaving upper windows open and lower windows cracked all night. 55F outside at 6:40 am.
Heat pump ac generally kicks on at 2:00pm or so. With a high today of 86F, it will probably cycle every 20 minutes until 9:00 pm when the outside temp drops below 70F.
The heat pump is a good investment. Never thought we'd need it in the PNW.
It's been a mild summer this year in EWA. Finally hitting the triple digits which is normal for August.
One more day of this then it's back down to the 80s.
Not at all sad that the heat dome passed us by this year. [emoji41]

100F in Central OR the last two days with AQI 500 yesterday and about 250 today. Have been outside a total of 15 minutes the last two days
Supposed to cool down in next couple of days, but don’t know about the smoke. Lightning in forecast for Thursday and Friday. Fuck me
Heat domes.... politics..... wars.....feels like end times.....
101 in EWA today, 104 tomorrow, 108 Wednesday and so on. Gonna be dryer than a popcorn fart by week's end.
What chu got?
92F on Union Hill today, probably 100F+ in downtown Redmond.
Forecast to be 91F Monday and 93F on Tuesday up on the hill. Then back to 85F Wednesday with onshore flow again through the week.
I'm so glad we got a heat pump.
72 in Northern Wisconsin today. Beautiful day on the lake. I have family in town and spent the day out on the island. My cousin’s grandkids are 8 & 11 y/o boys, they were doing cannonballs off my dock.

We’re burning up over here.
Vegas beats the all time record of 117 with a whopping 120 today.
105.6 at my house. I'm heading to the Sierra hoping to find cooler air at 10k'.
Insane rains here... felt like Their Eyes Were Watching God. (If you have't read it, give it a go.)
35C (95F) today, Tuesday forecast to 40C (104F). Actually seasonal in my experience here since ‘08. And a slow May melt, so H2O table at normal. No complaints.
Redding broke their all time high too. Everywhere near Sacramento to Vegas seems to have at least broke their daily high if not all time.

99F today in Central OR, gonna be 103 by Tuesday. Lows in mid 60’s.
I can keep the house 25F below ambient temp during the day, then open the windows at 0300.
MTB ride will commence at 0730 tomorrow - will be 90 by 1000.
Our mountain areas at 5-6000ft will be just as hot as our inland areas the next week with highs in the mid 90s. Maybe 10 degrees cooler a bit higher up at places like Big Bear.
So I'll be staying close to home until the heat wave passes. I don't have much to complain about though since it's mid 70s for a high where I live near the beach, with a few areas I can ride without melting.
Was up in Roberts Creek BC over the weekend where it was in the upper 70s F max with cool maritime influence. As we drove through Vancouver it hit 92 quickly. Seattle is toasty but the heat pump is saving us big time.
I turned the AC back on around 9:00 this morning. It's heating up fast.
110 with 90% humidity. :fuckyou:
That seems... unlikely. :D

Only 100 here, seems unnecessary
