Oh, that's probably a good catch. They might be pretty dark on more open ski slopes. I use them a lot skiing groomed trails in the trees and they seem to not adjust dark too much. Especially now when the sun is low.
Later in the year, when the sun gets higher, they may not be as clear.

I always keep a pair of these in my pack. I usually wear polarized sunglasses but if the light fails and it's snowing hard, these are nice to have. 15 bucks, w no fog. They will fog in some conditions but their better than most. They come in a bunch of lens colors

The amazing Diggins won back-to-back events this weekend in the Tour de Ski in Toblach, Italy: her first-ever classic WC win today (15km mass-start), after winning the freestyle sprint event yesterday. She races in the 20km freestyle on Tuesday.

Any favorites for 20 degree weather jackets? I got a Dhaehlie Power Jacket for X-mas, but the fit is pretty restricting even on my relatively thin build. It's a combo of softshell and some light chest insulation.
I assume you will be skating groomed track like the devil is on your tail
with a warm yurt/hut/vehicle waiting for you at the end?

I’ve been watching Tour de Ski all week, incredible skiing on display in the beautiful Dolomites.
Today was firm and fast, things are starting to really click again. Such a crazy hard sport, when the balance and the timing come together, that feels nice. The Rossi’s are especially good when it’s firm.

Nice g! Perfect winter day in Vermont. The addition of the snowmaking at Woodstock Nordic is making a huge difference. The cutoff between northern Vermont and southern Vermont is stark, way less snow south of Killington.
Lots of folks out today enjoying near perfect weather and conditions.

Question for the home waxing people who wax every outing or so and tailor it to the expected temperature - what are you using? Traditional wax with an iron, rub on or..?
Any recommendations?
Used to iron/scrape/brush glide wax every time. But the spray on wax is so easy - that’s all I use now unless I’m going for a long skate (over [emoji638] hours). The iron in wax seems to last a bit longer.
Kick wax is still the same stuff I’ve been using for decades. I don’t bother with klister - if it’s warm I skate or use skin skis.

I’ve been waxing every couple of outings or more if temps change drastically. I don’t really care to much but it certainly sucks when the wax is wrong skate skiing.
I was actually wondering as I waxed my skis last time if people base grind their skate skis?
Mine have a few minor scratches and no base structure so I was wondering…..

Skate skis and tips'n'tails on stride skis, I try to hot wax every other outing or so.
For kick wax, I prep the skis' kick zones by rubbing in some green special and then ironing that in. Rubbing & corking the blue extra or whatever the day calls for goes on nicely when the mid-ski base has been prepped in advance with a cold kick wax. As with teledad, if it isn't a blue or a maybe-blue-maybe-purple (and ends up being purple) kind of day, I'll use something other than kick-wax stride skis (I have all sorts of klister in a drawer purchased decades ago that I never use).
Yes grinding skate skis makes a huge difference. The stickers on the tops of my skis indicate different grinds for different conditions. I’m lucky one of the best Nordic techs in the country is ten miles away from my garage!

Thanks guys. Time to up my xc wax game. I've been using the same can of generic rub on paste for longer than I want to admit.
EDIT - One hopefully last question - on wax less skis with a fish scale glide zone is there any purpose to waxing that area? On my last outing it was warmer and snow was sticking really bad underfoot.
I've been using Vauhti liquid wax this year and have been pretty pleased with it. It has a wider listed temp range than Swix CH wax and there is no scraping involved just hitting the bases with a nylon brush after waiting 10-20 minutes for the wax to dry. I'm sure it isn't the best possible glide but damn is it convenient.Quote:

Do you guys think XC is growing?
My exposure is limited to Snowmass Village. But the trails seem to me, to be the least busy, they've ever been.
I attribute it to the explosive growth of uphilling on the resort.
Lots of people that would have been XCing, are now skinning.
Covid gave it a boost here in E. WA.

Hoping to get out tommorow afternoon. No new snow and not expecting any, and the temps will be just a degree or two below freezing on a very sunny day.
Last time I went in similar conditions snow was sticking to my waxless classic skis. Real bad.
Still putting my wax arsenal together so don't have a ton of options. If it is sticking, how terrible an idea would it be to apply a temperature-specific liquid wax on the fish scale area? Seeing tons of mixed views online.
Use the coldest (hardest) wax you have. I apply wax on the kicker only in one direction so it doesn't clog up the scales. You could also try paraffin from a candle in a pinchQuote:
