ESAW Update!
Now that the world’s only superpower once again has a functioning gov’t, the USFS snow rangers have returned from furlough so we are closer to wrapping up our presentation line-up:
- - Doug Richmond (of Bridger Bowl & the American Avalanche Institute) will present on “Human Behavior at the Ski Area Boundary” and discuss Bridger’s snow safety program.
- - Continuing an annual theme of "Eastern avies somewhere other than the Prezzies" we will once again have Gaspe/Chic-Chocs, and new for this year will be Baxter/Katahdin.
- - If you were there in 2011, then you definitely remember the woman who presented on upslope snow: a very intense and captivating speaker! So, she's back, this time on field wx obs in dynamic conditions.
- - Tim Brown, a fully certified IFMGA guide, is flying in from CO to teach an avalanche instructor refresher course the following day. I'm not even going to bother listing his topic, since he was such a good presenter at our last refresher course two years ago that he can make any topic valuable and interesting!
- - Roger Damon (who has been teaching avy courses since the 1960s) will present on avalanches in-bounds at ski resorts...in the East! (One of the incidents is kind of like the Monty Python castle swamp skit.)
- - Panel discussion by int'l climbers on avoiding big avalanches on big mountains...ya know, like the equivalent of the Northeast Snowfield taking out Joe Dodge Lodge!
- - A world's leading authority on snow physics, Sam Colebeck, will for the third year in a row present on something I can't understand at all. The topic is different this year, but since I won't be able to understand it, the topic is kind of irrelevant. Still fun being overwhelmed like this, plus the microscope pictures are really cool too!
- - The nation’s foremost authority on avy rescue just happens to be passing through the East at this time during his typical intercontinental travels, so we’re hoping to wrangle him into a presentation also.
- - AvaTech. So what is AvaTech? Googling reveals just kind of a shell website. But here is a teaser pic from their guest presentation at an avy course I was teaching this weekend -- it's essentially the future of snowpit hardness profiles ... today:

Time for a new ECRC!
Laser is AWOL in Florida and seems to have lost touch with winter. As the man with the morning BoB reports,I nominate VT-F to start the new thread...
Anyone second?
Weird dream. I went to my local hill in august, and it was full of snow. Stoked, I grabbed my adrenalins with bd ascents to try them. The hill was frozen solid. I couldn't climb an inch.
^^^ second that! Lets get it going. This weather keeps up will be climbing ice in a couple weeks. Gotta be time. And VTF is the perfect man for the job.

Voodoo is looking pretty sweet at Magic:

^^^^^ I would second that the new ECRC should be started by VTF.....its a shame Laser is mia but like Ullr fest the torch must be passed.......
If you haven't seen the VID BD posted about helmets , its worth watching...touching to say the least,,,,,,great educational tool....
ROG you should watch it twice maybe three time
TBATT....well done, looks awesome for sure ......scary as hell as well
I'll swing by his work and hit 'em in the head with an ice axe and when he's laying on the floor I'll put a helmet on him and hit the other side of his head. Then I'll stand over him and say "SEE!...you dumbass! The second blow didn't hurt, did it!?"
Then and only then will it sink into the stubborn massholes head!
:fmicon::fmicon::fmicon::fmicon::fmicon::fmicon::f micon::fmicon:
+1 on BD's nomination of VTF, if for no other reason than the daily morning reports.
May gal and I were just discussing this, funneh Nuff. She called me a stubborn bastard, but followed that up with saying she wouldn't want me to change a bit. Guess that settles that!
60 degrees light breeze and sunny up here in North Conway. Spectacular riding conditions! Just did a nice 2 hour single track loop on the east side with my sweetie. Gonna do a longer west side ride tomorrow. The top o George stayed frosty white all day.
Vt free! Get the new roll call goin, would ya?!

One vote for the cock
Laser acknowledged that he needs to start a new ECRC over on FB...give him a day or so.
Voodoo is the politically correct name just in case it ever ends up on the trail map...no way t stays a secret after the first pow day.
I don't think anyone expected it to be a secret right next to the lift. Really? I think part of the plan is to continue create glades that rival jay and stowe and increase skier visits and the experience for all.
The glade is now at least 150 feet wide with more than numerous lines all the way thru it. DoWork and crew did an exceptional job and did not overthin. So well done.
Should be getting fresh turns for several runs if you wear camo and keep the woots to minimum. That will be hard!
Plus watching DoWork rip thru it on the first big pow day in his bright red fartbag from the lift should be the end of any secret. I hope to be right next to him! :)
Now some of the other lines that will be cut this fall ... well, those won't be on a map soon. :)
Magic has sooo much potential for future amazing glade development. Hope to participate again soon as much as they will have me.

We can tuck this one in..and turn out the lights. Slevin, err, #7 is up.
Off to 7 it is...
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how to find threads that haven't had a post in them for over a year? I was curious how 6.0 and it 10,459 posts stacks up against previous roll calls. Seems like we have been pretty consistent at achieving the 10,000+ mark for the last couple of years. Even if half of those posts are summertime pissing matches
Whatever it takes! Doh here's one more!

This is pretty much it. If we want to keep Magic the bastion of the freshies it has been for many of us for years, that honestly means there has to be a plan to have more tree skiing as time goes on. Be it by way of improving existing areas or carefully making new runs, I feel this will be of increasing importance in the coming years as we garner more and more skier visits. That and the mountain has such potential in so many places, it's hard not to muse about the possibilities when they are it's just everywhere you look. Mix in Management's desire to keep improving the mountain & dig an ever-deeper foothold in the natural and advanced skiing niche, the constantly growing and evolving volunteer program and all the positive feedback we've been getting recently and it's just a winning combination. The mountain stays fresh and exciting and the natural state of the place is carefully preserved- I know that you know how hard we've worked to keep a healthy, sustainable forest/habitat (most important even above the skiing in the long run) and I'm glad you're pleased with how it's been carried out for sure. That means a lot to me!
Voodoo is absolutely an exercise in the potential of working together to make the future better- and sustainable. Management, volunteers, patrol... It takes a village for sure, but I believe in us. I believe in Magic. :) :yourock:
The only bad part about all this is the anticipation of actually ripping it... I seriously cannot wait to shred that line
