I'm a 42 year full time ski patroller, and by definition, a professional skier...

Freeskiing is tough to judge because you make all your money from product endorsement. Contrast that to ski racing, where someone like Shiffrin can make well over $500k a year in just race winnings (excluding all her endorsement money; not to mention the USST pays for travel and lodging). And in ski racing, it is safe to say someone like Shiffrin is objectively the best female ski racer on earth when she wins the overall title. Where as the freeskiers in say, a TGR film or the FWT are damn good skiers. But can you say that they are objectively the best on Earth? As Supermoon points out, there may be skiers out there doing even ballsier, more creative adventures but not cashing in or promoting themselves. It's difficult to compare today's freeskiers (who increasingly must rely on instagram and youtube for money, which, lets face, is kind of annoying) and those in the past, who just had to sell skis and redbull.
obviously I'm not fit to drink your bath water
Unfortunately the pay and benefits aren't good enough for that to be the reality for many professional athletes. Heck, Home Depot has done commercials showing how many professional athletes they give jobs to. In some sports the endorsement opportunities are pretty lean and they survive on stipends from their governing organization and part-time jobs.
LOL, having raised a beer with both of you two crusty old farts, I know you'd get along just fine.
What happens after these athletes have some screen time (TGR, etc)? Living the good life off their TGR money and 401k? Back to tending bar and ski bumming?
They can always sell off their extra goggles
‘Professional’ is based on three items - competence, remuneration, and accountability. Most have some form of the first 2, but most can’t claim the third (and social media by itself isn’t accountability in a true sense IMO)
Always liked that kid jasonsomething that went and skied the Colorado 14ers by himself on college break. Years ago.
Got vibed from Dawson and davenport I think? Who cares.
Under the radar savages are everywhere.
incest?
There are still pockets of places where people quietly get shit done and don't spray about it. Those people are probably the ones who sit quietly in the corner while a bunch of bros brag about tagging another guide book masterpiece. That corner is shrinking but you better believe they know more than a few other obscure options that required more than picking up a book at the local Safeway..

Per CG’s IG, illness and weather turned her around in her attempt to ski G2.
That damn weather and it's micro aggressions towards her cannot be tolerated.
This.
Accountability.
Professional athletes must have this trait. If they don't have it, they're either at the top of their sport or about to be axed.
Ya don't get to spew as a sponsored athlete.
Ya don't get to really defend yourself when attacked, gotta suck it up.
And have the mind power to sleep well without venting.
Social media athletes get to say whatever the f they want, and are not accountable.
Can't lump all athletes together...
Ski patroller is a snow worker, maybe an avalanche professional or a medical professional depending on track. They aren't paid for their skiing; skiing is just a tool for the job.

Sponsorship types
Skate shop sponsorship
Obligations under the terms of a shop sponsorship vary but are usually light and the rider usually represents the sponsor by wearing branded apparel and by submitting media (videos and photographs) for use in advertising campaigns. Shops commonly employ skateboarders and sponsor their employees. This occurs along with traditional discounts to subsidize pay or as part of an employment agreement.
Skate shops may sponsor both amateur and professional skateboarders.
Amateur sponsorship
Amateur skateboard sponsorship involves the light provision of merchandise and equipment along with the occasional payment of travel and accommodation or living expenses when representing a sponsor in an out of town competition. Amateur skateboarders are not paid to skate and many are too young in any event, as per law.
Company flow sponsorship
Flow sponsorship is similar to shop sponsorship in that it generally involves the sponsorship of an individual by a small to medium commercial skateboard company or enterprise. However, flow sponsorship usually involves the provision of free merchandise but the offer is not traditionally consistent or long term. Flow sponsorship is seen as one of the first stepping stones of opportunity which an aspiring professional skateboarder might accept on their journey to become pro. And is often used as an incentive before a skateboarder joins a team whilst they are considering all available offers from interested parties. The trade of goods mostly revolves around featuring in print, online and video based media.
Professional company individual sponsorship
Professional sponsorship is sponsorship attached to royalty payments and comes with a regular salary in all but the worst of contract formats. Contracts vary but coverage of living expenses which allow the skateboarder to travel and practice to be able to compete on a full-time basis without the need to work full-time, may be factored in. Healthcare, image rights, bonuses, product design and art work licensing are commonly covered in professional skateboarding contracts. Sponsored skateboarders receive monthly packages of sponsored merchandise and equipment as well as branded clothing and other promotional items which feature the sponsored skater's name or personal logo.
Professional skateboarders may receive royalty payments collected against products sold by their sponsor(s) which display the skateboarder's name or logo
