It must work or a race team wouldn't use it but I'm not really a fan for a couple reasons.
It's actually an anti-gravity bleed. Gravity pushes air bubbles up, not down. The only thing pushing the air down is the weight of the fluid.
Without any actual pressure applied, it's very possible for the fluid to just simply slide past a bubble rather than dislodging it.
Also, the whole gravity thing is a good reason to stick with a bottom-up bleed system. There's really nothing more sure-fire than pressurizing the caliper and pushing the fluid/air bubbles up through the master cylinder. To those of us that came up bleeding with two syringes, the bleed funnel is a pretty idiot-proof advancement.
