[QUOTE=Yanos;6107983] Two reasons for the combo. First, the Arneson could be pulled out of the water when not in use to minimize drag. It would go about 50 knots on just the diesels, and the turbine added about 10 knots (and 4,000hp at 300 gallons an hour), so it would usually be reserved for relatively calm water as overspeeds could be a real bitch.
Second, the waterjets can tolerate slippage, so having them in combination with the turbine/prop worked out well. Couldn't use CPP's because of the losses, and this thing was just designed for balls-out efficiency.
Even in midocean there was a lot of junk that clogged up the jets, and a lot of time was spent opening up and cleaning them out.
True that. Tom was a really interesting guy, and a genuinely nice guy. Self made from real estate in California (Vacaville) and Hawaii. He was typical of the super successful people I've met - always on the run, two or three phones going at once, faxes and juggling a dozen projects at once. Very generous in many ways too.
This was at the end of the Transatlantic.

He loved everything fast, and the garage on the North Shore is something I still drool about 30+ years later.
His project manager on the Eagle and (legendary) throttle man and I still stay close, and have Thanksgivings together every year with new wives/girlfriends typically in attendance. He almost took my head off when testing a 100+ mph 14 ft scale model for the old Popeye's owner Al Copeland back-in-the day that decided to go airborne within inches of my head. John is still the coolest guy I know, making Dirty Harry look frantic, and after that just said sloooowly, "guess the wing need adjustment". Yeah, guess so JC.
The boat lost about 10 knots with all the extra weight when it became a yacht, and really made no sense with only one stateroom, but it still sent quite message in the water. I well remember JC bringing the 100ft down the New River, and Shooters bar getting rid of all the boats so we could tie up there. Couldn't buy a drink whenever we crewed it.:)

I miss the way Shooters (Ft. Lauderdale) used to be. Sadly, I have been refused alcohol and asked to leave of that bar for unruliness on more than one occasion. ...Those were the days
Huh, that’s a good point... Never really thought about that since I/Os are so common around here. I’ve always liked the fact that you trim the whole outboard out of the water when you are done running around, just seems like it makes good sense, especially here in Seattle where it rarely freezes!
Installed a diesel heater in our “camper boat” this week. Temps in the mid 30’s, but we're now set to keep going until December.
did it come with that basket, or is that something you rigged up?
What engines are those, and why the whale tales?
Cheaper than tabs?
Sweet Dory. Looks like a Western Downeaster
Twin Tohatsu 50’s with permatrim plates to keep the bow down when headed into it. Simple bolt on, no electronics or hydros. Seem to work well enough but doesn’t do anything for side to side trim. Boat came with them when we bought it.
Its a C-Dory 22’ Cruiser... essentially a VW camper on the water, nice for what it is. Our Grady White rides better and faster but for camping this thing works out better with the enclosed house.
^^^
Can’t. Wait. Best of both worlds for me.
So this...Ummmm...yeah...

Nordhavn yacht btw. Pretty badass boats.
It's a fuckin' embarrassment. All you need in FL is $$ to drive a boat. They started changing that a couple years ago. My daughters will need a Power Squadron or USCG cert. to drive a boat, but the rental boats and tourists will still be a problem. Good thing is, the side of the boat usually has a HUGE ad fro the rental service that you can see from far away. Wide berth is advised.
There used to be a nude beach at Haulover inlet, I'm not sure if it's still allowed there.
When I lived in NY and would take friends out fishing (or just for a ride) a lot of times I'd go past the nude beach at Fire Island far enough offshore to see unclothed bodies but no detail, usually by the time someone noticed and grabbed a pair of binoculars we'd be past the mixed section into the gay part and all they'd see is naked guys.
Yeah, the rule grandfathered in all the older idiots. 16 to drive a boat now, and you must have proof of passing a certification course. Started 2 or 3 years ago, so it will take a while to weed out the maroons. Haulover and Jupiter Inlet can be a challenge for the most experienced boater on certain days. I consider myself seasoned enough to know when to turn around and just settle for an ICW cruise day. Luckily, we don't get seas like that over here very often. Nobody goes out on those days either. Shallow ass gulf can throw some nasty seas at you quickly on those days.
I think it's the whole country? I know my kids would need to pass a test for Mass. and they're in their mid-20s A few years ago I looked into it in Maryland and same deal.
