That was a pretty simplistic view on why it costs more IMO. Yes lobbyists are a problem but even if you went back to lodge doctors and co-ops for primary care and hospital visits that doesn’t address specialty surgical care and intensivist physicians. Things have changed somewhat since WWI.

It would help if lobbyists didn’t have so much say in how the rules are written for access and reimbursement. Many(most) physicians that I work with would readily change to a universal single payer system or a very regulated insurance system like France.

You obviously have a beef with doctors and dentist and that’s understandable but some of your anger might be misdirected.

Totally agree, and I’ve stated that in this thread.

As a longterm poster I sometimes (wrongly) assume that my dry humor will get recognized or assumed. A bit like Highangle I guess, I’ll post a table with ‘40% Other’ in there and assume people will also find that amusing.

My doctor friends in the US earning hudge salaries do work long hours. Would they work 40 hrs & be happy earning 100 or 120k like an equivalent doc in many first world countries? Doubtful.

I went into this thread thinking we were all a bit glazed by all the well-researched studies and articles attempting to break down why things are so fucked up here. So many primary factors. For example, a few yrs ago I read a study that compared Texas to some other states & concluded that the insane number of diagnostic centers there reflected the doctors’ strategy of over subscribing to all diagnostics in order to (understandably) protect themselves from insane malpractice lawsuit awards common in that state.

The fuckery of insurance companies is legion & it’s good to see it spotlighted—AOC had a pithy quote today—but in addition to serving the capitalist beast they’re also being asked to function, in their sick way, as a panel making the ethical judgements that ideally would be decided by groups not directly tied to the gravy train yet also educated about & accountable, broadly, for the costs.

Something we can all agree on: McKinsey sucks. McKinsey will pay $650 million for opioid work after settlement with DOJ. The consulting firm McKinsey has entered into a deferred prosecution agreement to resolve a Department of Justice investigation.

With more CEO's needing security, now is a good time to open a security company. But if the CEO you're getting paid to protect gets shot and killed will your insurance cover your losses or will it get denied due to negligence?

You have to hedge by taking out life insurance on the subject. The security company hedges by taking out liability insurance in case they fail to uphold their contract. Then you securitize the whole thing so we can bet on the outcomes. What a wonderful time to be alive!

It's a crazy job. Something I know zero about, but it seems like if someone wants to take a CEO or whoever out, they're going to. It's not like SS who secure every step ahead of time and jump in front of a bullet for the president...which is another thing I can't comprehend. They'll probably take the killer out and in this case probably would have saved his life as he wouldn't have got all those shots off.

It comes from hospital and other types of consolidation deriving more revenue from owning the facilities etc. Industry consolidation makes it possible for hospital groups to jack up prices.

A pretty good hint is that, just a month ago, a narrow majority of Americans (no doubt including many who celebrate Luigi and what he stands for) voted for a man and his cabal that will work to give United Healthcare greater latitude for denying claims, while also steering people who would otherwise escape their clutches at age 65 back to being at their mercy via Medicare "Advantage" plans (which will suck even worse when they're no longer competing against actual Medicare).
