Failing to disclose that stuff until the end of the meal is crap, and while I agree with those who suggest you should try not to punish the server for management's shortcomings, having $22 slapped onto the bill without warning--even if $18 of it is money I was expecting to pay--would really piss me off.

I think I'd be more inclined to ask for the manager than to go to the ATM, though, and if they refused to adjust the total, I'm not sure what I'd do. If they did paper receipts, I'd be tempted to pay with a card and dispute the amount.

I'd definitely be looking to bitch to the credit card company, though--merchant agreements usually frown on crap like that, even if it's in a jurisdiction where the ability to apply a surcharge for the card is protected by law.

In general, credit card surcharges piss me off. It's 2023, FFS, paying that is as much a part of doing business as paying the electric bill. Build the cost in and move on.

FWIW about 30% of restaurants fail in their first year. It's a tough business.
My favorite breakfast and lunch place recently started charging a cc fee. I still can't get a table.
Another favorite doesn't take cc's at all. They have a free ATM on site.

We're flying to Germany in two weeks on CC rewards miles--miles paid for by the businesses where I use my CC.

4% + 18% = 22%

22% of 110 is 24.20

to my reading, the claim was $20. was being added unnecessarily to the dinner bill
( tipping was unnecessary - to my reading )

four bucks is a pretty-standard ATM fee around here ( some less, some "free" )


I don't believe for a minute that 18% goes to the waitstaff -
- the business documents it as income, so it is taxed ; and
- it is paid as labor so it is taxed ;
- business takes an administrative cut ,,,

around here, about half the eateries call for 50% of tips to go to the kitchen staff ( Policy ).

I believe the waitstaff is lucky to see 5% -10% of non-cash tips.

Yeah $120 tab and that 18% was after tax, I only tip on pre-tax. The food was marginal at best and the service sucked. We had apps on the table before the guy brought silverware, the salad came out with the main course and I was almost done with my dinner when he came to ask if we wanted a drink and my wife had already run out of water. I was planning on tipping him $10, shit service gets a shit tip. I'm not going to change because the current thing is a trophy for everyone. Because the guy was bad at his job, didn't communicate anything to us and I felt like I got baited they got nothing. Oh and yeah, the atm was 2 doors down so it didn't take any longer than going to the bathroom, worth the time if you ask me.

Sounds like a zero tip experience to me, if not a complete waste of money.

I think tipping should never be expected. It should only be used when the service is hooking you up, or you are trying to get teh service to hook you up E.g. slipping the bartender a tip so you get immediate service ahead of others, tipping when the burger joint tosses in free fries because they accidentally made a double order for someone else, tipping restaurant staff because they hooked it up with a free off-menu app the chef is working on, etc. That would be nice. Unfortunately that is not the world we live in here in the USA.

Its not that hard to use common sense when and how much to tip because the workers depend on the tip for a livable wage (restaurant staff, guides, food delivery, etc). If you think you would need to justify not tipping, then you should tip.

I agree with that 100%.

Coworker today from the South was talking about the low minimum wage in the Southern states makes for better service due to the requisite effort for tips…. Or is it just the “southern hospitality” culture….
