Back in the glory days of airtravel, when they were all making good bucks.
Pre frequent flier miles, you had to wear a coat and tie to nonrev, which I despised, but you almost always got to sit up front. Nothing like starting/ending the vacation w/ a 1/2 dozen or so bloody marys. The food upgrade back then was significant. Now days unless it's a redeye coming back from AK or early am flight I feel blessed just to get a seat.
I've been on that bus (I believe, it's been almost 20 years) and feel your pain. As a new grad from MN on his first trip to New York trying to make it in the big city, this was one of the main reasons I got on a plane back to MN. Of course that was before they started making an effort at cleaning up the subway and I was told the bus system was the safe route. Wow I saw some freaks that still haunt my nightmares.
Hey, nice marathon time!

Odin, free wine in coach on int'l flights is pretty standard issue, or at least that's my experience.
I got hooked on the International Business Class when working an international sales job where I was able to upgrade on flights to Europe, Asia, Australia 3/4 of the time. Really makes a difference when taking 8-16 hour flights.
Even got the upgrade to first class a couple times - I sat in seat 1A on a flight from Seoul to LA. I could literally see down the runway out my window.
Then I had the miles for a few years to take a few frequent flier paid business class trips for free.
Now its quite painful to ride in coach with your elbows bashing some fat guy from Hackensack for 10 hours.
To add to the bus stories -
A friend of mine in China took an overnight bus in China from Tianjin to ... somewhere exotic, I forget where. Long trip, seats didn't recline much, standard China crap (smoking), etc. Anyway, there was a cute Chinese girl next to him - he ended up getting a handjob out of it. Apparently made the trip a bit more tolerable. I still took the plane when I was over there, though.
