It wasnt all that bad at the wood. It was mashed spuds but totally skiable and really good in some spots, of course in other spots it was really horrible.
OOps was good. Dan cliffs was good. Lower cirque was really good.
Waterfall was the least fun Ive ever had on skis 1/4" crust on the spuds.:nonono2:
Even Kirkwood was not spared. Avy control continued through the morning. Turns were made on lift 5 until almost 10:00 when 6 (Cornice) opened. The wall opened just before noon. Wet sloppy sierra cement with avy chunks the size of trucks. Left at 2:00 with darkening wet skies, warm temps. If this stuff freezes, bring the ice skates.

The wait for chairs to open. First ride on 5 at 9:30, 6 didn't open until 10:00. Lots of explosions above the wall and backside were heard all morning and into the early afternoon.

Once on top, you had to dodge these snow boulders. Huge crown lines under Sentinel, and the entire wall was avy debris later in the day.

Thanks for the Kirkwood updates!! Today was QUITE different than yesterday at Mt Rose :eek: ...not horrible though...I got a few hours of good turns in and some exercise hiking over from the lakeside lift....
34 in the parking lot, light misty drizzle down low and needlelike sleet up high...it seemed the "snow level" hovered in the high 8's all day...there were pockets of good windbuff here and there up high and down low the untracked stuff was fun....
...then the wind picked up, the sleet turned into buckshot and lifts started closing!!
Jim, it was nice making turns with you ...and your boys seem like two cool kids....let me know when your getting up there again - I'm thinking Thurs or Fri for me...
ok... i think we can blame my family for this. normally i've been blowing out of Tahoe for Christmas to go to Maui to visit my parents and my sister's family. This year, my sister's family came to Truckee and arrived this past Saturday.... just a few hours before this past storm started. my parents arrive tonight, so that might not be helping. of course the in-laws arrive from Boston this Friday, so maybe they will bring the cold air.Quote:

gold coast was running at squaw today. as well as later yesterday.
the water content of the snow was around 75% if you want to get down to science. the 9000 ft. snow levels last night manked it good. it was slow and sticky even with warm temp wax on the spats. its just too flat up there. the groomers were fun and soft and flat. did two laps, and then did some racing with the crew on mtn run. i totally won. tomarrow looks like more rain.
i might go to mt. rose and see what happened there tomarrow.
What will the cindtions be like at kirkwood on tuesday? Will it be worth the drive from SF?
there will be wet snow to ski on.

took 2 runs off powderbowl and 1 face run at the heave and deemed it not worthy of missing more then an hour of work so i bailed. might go back for another few runs tomorrow if they open the top. track is punched on waterhouse proper but don't know about powderhouse and the 2ndhand word is that the top half is pretty good and the lower half downright sucks. prolly check out powderhouse pre-work wednesday for the exercise if nothing else.
my bud w/ the waterhouse report also said shit was whoomping and cracking all over the place so be afraid.
Yeah, Lego and I went to Sugarbowl on Sunday, and it was exciting to finally ski while it was "snowing", but once we went into a steeper tree section, it was deep and extremely heavy. I couldn't ski this crap worth shit, so we left after an hour and a half. Too bad, I should have stayed longer to actually learn how to ski the deep wet shit, but it wasn't fun for me and I was getting tired of seeing Lego waiting for me at the end of the runs - he recovering from an ACL tear and all.....:rolleyes:
It was absolutely dumping rain Sunday night at the lake and the base of Squaw. Forecast for tomorrow has snow level at 8500 feet and up to 3-4" of water content by the end of the week.
If you're still up there, could you please leave your refrigerator door open? Thanks.
i pray conditions improve by next week, might be my only week in the sierras this year.:frown:

Well, it wasn't powder, but Kirkwood was surprisingly good today.
AKA dragged my ass out there, I really had no interest in skiing frozen mashed potatoes, but, as it turns out, we didn't have to.
First run, as always, was oops where the snow had become chalky goodness. Hit some east facing trees and found a soft corn like material. I reported this find to AKA and we hit an east facing ridge in Palisades that was smooth and fast corn, huh, that was good. We repeated that run and then headed out past the boundaries to another completely untracked east facing ridge and scored some really good corn.
Finished off the day by hiking vista for some west facing snow. On the way out we had some beautiful chalky turns on The Wall. Vista was a combination of wind deposited soft stuff, corn and some slightly crusty glazed over snow, that was easy to break through. It was fast and smooth.
Yup, definitely a good day at the wood.
Back at AM today. Had to take 3 yr old skiing. She only cares that the Meadow chair is running.
Good News: she had fun.
Bad news: Top of Alpine got very warm. It looked like everything below 8000 got significant amount of rain last night. Snow was very hard first thing this morning. The stuff in the Sun soften up by 11.
Keyhole/lower Saddle did open today. All other hikes were closed.
It's going to be rock hard below any new snow we get. If the wind forecast holds (80+mph), I'm probably not skiing tomorrow
