InThayne Owners... anymore feed back? Tell me more about these skis!!!

I love 4FRNTs straight shapes, damp layups, and progressive mount points. Trying to justify a pair of InThaynes for a slackcountry pow/jib setup.

Heavy rig, but that frictionless feel of 4FRNTs EHP/Renegade straight shape in soft snow cannot be classified as anything but other worldly. EHP 186cm with a twin tip at around 1800-1900gm with Shift/Tecton binder is still my ideal slackcountry/jibby setup for the Wasatch Back. That or maybe a Faction CT 4.0 188... but no actual experience riding Faction

I bought a pair and skied them all last season. They're pretty much exactly what you're expecting, which means they're awesome. I was hoping for a looser, goofier renegade, and these delivered. They still seem to appreciate the same style of skiing as the Rens (i.e. neutral, but still athletic type stance), and they still do well at speed thanks to the flex pattern. They like to be driven, but will obviously still let you shut it down or throw the skis sideways because there's so much rocker. Not as much fun in tight trees as something really soft like a hellbent/chetler type ski, but certainly still manageable. If a pair of renegades and bent chetlers had a kid, this would be it. I also toured on them a bunch up in BC and they did alright on the skin track, but nothing to write home about. I think this is exactly the ski Thayne had in mind when he started messing with the shape/flex, and I'm interested to see what the changes for this year end up feeling like.

Summary:

Pow - Surfy, buttery, and loose like a bent chetler, etc.
Soft resort snow - they still like to ski fast, but definitely aren't overly demanding
Hardpack - I mean they're fine. You could probably everyday these at the resort but I'm not sure they'd be choice #1 for me.
Trees - As long as things don't get super tight they're tons of fun
Backcountry - The way down makes everything worth it, and we could all use a leg workout anyway, right?

Factory and yes. I wouldn't mount any further back. They don't like to be ridden in the back seat, much like the renegades.

As always, I'd measure it out just in case. Never trust the graphic.

I had last years model and they weren't for me. Too stiff for me and surprisingly hooky for a ski with a 35m turn radius. I really like the hoji but the thayne just didn't do it for me.

Just bought a pair of the this years 181cm InThaynes. Didn’t have a rockered ski in the quiver last year and I missed that.

I’ve owned/skiied Hojis, YLEs, Rens and Kyes. This one looks to be a perfect size/combination of each. Will be a great Baker ski.

Ship date is not until Nov 12. Mounting with bright red Jester Pros.

Will post a quick review when I ski em.

So....ya I have a pair of this years 4FRNT InThaynes. So does my older son. I bought a pair and then bought him a pair for Xmas cause I frickin’ loved mine and am a good Dad (my younger son has my 2015 Rens). Also got free 4FRNT stickers, free 4FRNT thermos and free 4FRNT strap and free 4FRNT carbon poles with his purchase. Plus free shipping to Canada right to North Van, no duty or taxes either. Simple.

We’re both 5’7”, 155-160 lbs. We both got the 181cms. I mounted at -5.5cm (+0.5cm from the -6cm rec) and my son mounted at -4cm (+2cm which is Thaynes mount?).

Previously I’ve owned/skied 186 Rens, 187 Hojis, 181 NAS Pows, 184 Bibbys, 187 YLEs, 185 Opuses, 181 Meridian 117s, 181 Kye 110s, 181 Nomad 115s as my pow ski. I’ve also skied Devastators, Lib Freerides, Moment PBJs.

Bought the InThaynes as I’ve been missing rocker since I sold my 2015 Rens and 2013 Hojis. At 5’7” and 160 lbs I kind of got away from 185cm+ skis >120mm waist so was pumped when the InThaynes came out with a 181cm. Specs of 137-117-129 are perfect.

I have 8 days on these so far this season. Some at Baker and some at Whistler. All pretty soft snow days.

All I can say is I love these skis. And I’m a ski whore. They kind of feel like a fat devastator? Stiff but maneuverable. But not too stiff. Not hooky at all. 25m radius seems right.

I also have last years Moment Meridian 117s (which I just bought too) and 2018 Icelantic Nomad 115s....which are both great skis in that 115-117mm waist size but I always grab for the 4FRNT InThaynes now.

Some quick random thoughts:

Groomers - The InThaynes rip on the groomers when you lay them over on edge. Great in soft snow. And also ok I found when you hit sudden sheets of ice. Surprisingly good grip for a rockered ski. Like the Devs.

Packed Pow - They are so so easy to ski really fast on?! In packed pow conditions they excel. They allow you to just fly over bumps, with that Ren/Hoji “other-worldly” frictionless feel and their tapered tip shape allows you to scrub speed when going mach looney (unlike my Meridians or Nomad 115s with big tips). So fun to ride the stiff tails. Easier than Rens to ski, but just as fun as the Rens.

Pow - In pow they “porpoise” and surf like they should. Almost Ren like. Love my mount at -5.5. Seems perfect. My son found no tip dive at his -4 mount. He’s more jibby and skis backwards. I don’t.

I find I am skiing way faster all over the mountain on these things. My son’s quote last week at Baker....he looks at me and says: “Dad I can’t die on these things. I can do anything”.

It’s weird but when I took out my 181cm Nomad 115s with only 2mm of camber, and a super fat 150mm tip, after being on the InThaynes (137mm tip) those Nomads (a great ski) felt “off” for a few runs. Then I realized it was me. As the InThaynes make you ski centered but when you want control you just pressure the stiff tails a bit and you’re back in control. So fun. Whereas the Nomads make you have to know how to ski? Haha.

Yesterday I hiked Spankys with them and picked my way across some sketchy lines and got to the high entrance to Ruby Bowl. Felt confident on these even being rockered skis.

Don’t really want to use the rest of my 5 ski quiver now....likely selling my 181cm 115 Icelantic Nomads. The 181cm Meridian 117s will be a rockered ski for super deep days. I also have 181 Nomad 105s and 182 PBJs.

The InThayne is really like the Ren had a baby with an Opus or YLE. You get all the nastiness of the Ren, but in a fun twin tip shape like an Opus or YLE. With that Ren and Hoji feel in a twin tip.

Sorry for going slightly off topic here, but you since you have had both, perhaps I could get your 5cents on the topic; how does Lib Pows and nomad 115s compare? Their dimensions are earily similar. I used to love my Pows, but of late find that I prefer my ON3P over them. I used to have my Pows mounted a cm or two back, where they were absolutely killer, where the fat back end makes em feel a bit unbalanced in dense pow when mounted at recommended. I enjoyed w108s in 184 more than the Pows the last time I rode my Pows (/they back to back), which was in deep, dense coastal pow.

edit: dammit, now you made me have Inthayne cravings...

Really want a pair of the 188s.

Now I'm thinking of them as well. Any comparison to Goats?

I’ve got a seasons pass to Mt Baker. So LibTech NAS Pows are like my home ski. Love them. This is my first year in many without any NAS Pows in the quiver. Almost bought another pair recently just to have them for Baker legitimacy.

I’ve owned and thrashed two versions of the 181cms NAS Pows (2012 and 2015) and both were mounted at rec at -6cm and I really liked them there. Put lots and lots of days on them. I took them everywhere.

Specs on the NAS Pow were 151-115-141 with a 17m turn radius.

Last year I got my Icelantic Nomad 115s which are 150-115-140 with a 19m tr. I actually tried the Nomad because it was so similar in dimensions to the nas pow. Both are great skis. The Nomads feel a bit more playful due to less camber than the nas pow and no magnetraction. But they ski pretty similar. Lots of shape and burly but not too stiff. Both skis rip, I could ski them both anywhere, on any snow as both rip groomers and are great in pow. I also love the old style big tips on both.

But man I frickin love rocker again. Especially in soft snow when you have your big skis on. So the nomad 115 and nas pow are becoming obsolete with the InThaynes and Meridians 117s I have.

But if I had to choose, Nomads over NAS Pows. By a slim margin.

I still have my 2012 Pows with 18m radius and bomber construction. I will probably hold on to them, if nothing else to use em every once in a while to reexperience the first pair of skis I bought when making the switch back from snowboarding. I also bought a pair of wreckcreate115s, that were significantly lighter and less sturdy, and slightly changed geo (in spite of the Lib saying they were the same). Sold those pretty fast iot try ON3Ps instead.

I am still fond of skis with camber, but I find that skis that are a bit narrower at the extremeties works better in variable conditions. As for Libs, wünder106s are quite a bit of fun - even if the build quality on my pair is/was not exceptional. Ufo100s are also a pretty decent ski imo, but ufo115s were frighteningly unstable at speed on hardback - too soft to hold an edge on hardpack, but fun in soft snow (probably better with the current version) - not recommended. Anyway, enough Lib.

Back to 4frnt: it is a bit funny, but perhaps this years Inthayne are closer to the ski everybody was wanting the Ren to be, than the Ren itself :)

Just skied Baker.

Was 7” of pow on crust up top and manky, crusty shit conditions down low.

Skied the 181cm InThaynes in the morning. They ripped it. Put on 182cm Moment PBJs in the afternoon.

InThaynes handled the tough crap better. Shocking actually.

They look an aweful lot like a twin EHP (tip and tail shape and splay) with a Renegade rocker profile, and a Devastator sidecut.

1) straight pull length on the 181cm? (You don’t have the 188cm, correct?)
2) actual weight?
3) rocker pics?
4) again, recommended mount vs true center? -2cm like others have said or something else?
5) the website makes the flat spot underfoot look substantially longer than the Dev or the Ren. Does that seem true to you? Almost EHP like?
6) how much of the damp ride quality of the EHP/Dev is in the InThayne? I had 2nd gen Rens and liked the shape, but eventually sold them because they didn’t ride very damp to me. This was versus the EHP and Dev which I find both have a very dampened ride quality.

I’ve wanted a twinned up, slightly lighter EHP forever... this sounds very close

Re 4). Rec is -6 from true center. There is a dent for rec on the ski 84.5cm from tail, so -6.

If I run a tape all along the base (how I like to measure), they are approx. 180.5cm

2) don’t know the weight. They feel same as my Icelantic Nomad 105. Not heavy. Not light. Just right.

Anyone able to compare a 196cm ren vs 189cm kye 120 vs 188cm inthayne ?

Been skiing the kye 120 recently. Digging the frictionless feel, ease of pivoting through trees, stability through chopped up soft snow. Miss the hold my dick top speed of the renegades and retarded shut it down/tube yourself at 40-55 mph; however, the kye 120s are much easier to ski particularly avoiding tip dive in less than ~35 degrees pitch and way easier through bumps.

How do the inthaynes compare? Note: I don't ski switch for shit.

Had my InThaynes out in deep at whistler today. So fun. So good in deep pow, packed pow, soft bumps.

Thinking of selling my Moment Meridian 117s...they’ve only been a skied 2x....InThaynes don’t let the Meridians get out of the truck. Haha. And I don’t see that changing soon.

You're really making me want to pick up a pair of Inthaynes. I'm about your size and also ski mainly at Whistler. Could you compare the Inthaynes to the 184 Devastators? I tried the latter and didn't quite get on with them, partly because they don't have much tip taper and weren't keen on being thrown sideways to scrub speed in the heavy snow we get up here.

Were they really sharp? That doesn’t sound right, IME. I find the 94 and 84 Dev are relatively easy to flick sideways in heavy snow. I don’t like either with really sharp edges, they felt more demanding and hooky without a tangible benefit even on firm. Ymmv

Factory tune, and tip and tails seemed to have been pre-detuned a bit, but they may have benefited from further detuning. Should've tried that, but ended up unloading them before doing much experimentation.

Picked up a pair of 188s, new B grade from Sterbenz's stash a couple day's ago for $399. I assume that means there's some blem issue. Report back when I get them mounted and break them in at Disco.

Ya that was me. Baker stickers give me away. You were on left side of the chair, I was sitting beside your buddy. I asked how you liked your Hojis.

InThaynes were so good in the conditions yesterday. I love being in the snow with inThaynes vs on the snow (with my Icelantic Nomad 115s.)

This was first tracks on Harmony yesterday....InThaynes under the surface doing their job.

I’ve owned 184cm Devs and REALLy liked them. I agree the 184cm Dev (at -5) felt a bit long at times. Then I had an epiphany about 3 yrs ago and asked myself why a 5’7”, 160 lb guy is skiing skis >184? Sold my 184s. 181 is my size now. 3cm matters. I’ve even skied my fiancé’s 174cm Devs, they skied fine. I’ve recently asked 4FRNT for a 180cm Dev? Haha

Re the InThaynes. They’re not as burly as the Rens, and I’ve never skied the EHPs but I would say the 181 inThaynes are similar in stiffness to a Dev. Just slightly more scrubable than a 184 Dev? Not sure if it’s the 3cm shorter length (vs 184 Dev) or the tapered tip shape on the InThayne. I just feel that when skiing the InThayne centered they are a super versatile ski. So far I haven’t had any issues in deep pow, old wind blown pow, packed pow and crap conditions (heavier pow on crust) or icy patches. I don’t think the InThaynes are super damp....more like super nimble?

I honestly had never really looked at the Inthayne as I figured it was a symmetrical pow jibber ski based on Thayne's ski movie segments but looks like I was dead wrong. The lower tip rocker is appealing... can't remember if I mentioned it to you on the chair but the Hoji as too much rocker for an all arounder for me, and the Renegade is just too big if it's not deep pow (but it rules in that).

One caveat for this thread.... I got in decent shape this year. I’m 160 lbs and fit. The last five years I’ve been skiing at closer to 180 lbs. Maybe if I was the 20 lbs heavier the 181cm Inthayne would feel/ski different for me?

I do think skiing the Inthayne at -5.5 to -6 (rec) makes it more versatile ( less jibby). I don’t think it’s a super burly charger (ie. a Renegade replacement), but the shape is fun and easy to ski everywhere as so far it seems good on groomers, steeps, bumps, pow. It’s been my go to ski this year in my first 20 days (and I also own PBJs, 105 & 115 Nomads and 117 Meridians).

Got my blem 188's in today - measure about 185cm on the dot. Didn't notice any blems besides some divots in the topsheet that are only noticeable in certain light. These skis seem solid and where an absolute deal from the stash. Attacks come in monday to mount em up, way stoked.
