Samwich, I really don't think there are anymore republicans. Here's my idea of a conservative. They want: 1. small goverment. Government is there to provide you w/ the means to make a living. Roads, courts, legislature who represents you etc. What we don't need are useless offices/divisions that don't add anything constructive to your daily life. This doesn't mean too little gov't, just effective gov't. 2. Low taxes- this goes w/ #1, if you have effective gov't you don't need a ton of taxes. 3. Gov't to stay out of your shit. You should be able to do what you want when you want as long as you don't infringe on other people's rights or laws. This goes for your business as well. You should be able to conduct your business free from gov't regulation (again, as long as you don't infringe on other rights- this is where environmentalists take issue. No one is advocating for the forrest, we may well infringe on the rights of the forrest but no one is there to call us on it.) These are all generalities and it goes much deeper than these. However, like I said, there are no conservative representatives that adhere to these ideals anymore.Quote:

Liberals generally: 1. Want to help out the less fortunate and beleive that the gov't is an effective (or appropriate tool) for this. I don't think anyone here will try to sway you one way or the other. The other thing you need to realize is that this is politics. I had a professor one time who told us a little story. It's quite a proveocative look into politics and I thought did a good job of getting the point across.
He was running for a city council position in a reasonably sized city. There was a tract of land in his district that was on a corner. It had always been zoned for residential. The locals did not want a gas station there. He stood behind them and stated he would fight to keep it from being rezoned. He was falling behind in the polls and needed $ for his campaign. The owner of the business who wanted to put the gas station in approached him and offered $100,000 for his campaign. He had a moral dilema here. He could take the $$$ and maybe win the election but then he'd have to break his word and allow the gas station to go in. Or, he could refuse the $$$ and lose the election. Pretty difficult decision. He really wanted the position, even if he had to break his word, he could have done a lot of good while in office. I think he chose not to take the $$$, that's not the point. The point is that every politician is pulled in a number of different ways. They owe people for getting elected. Its not good to turn your back on the people who got you there otherwise you won't win the next time around. Politics are pretty shitty all in all.
And remember, if you're 19 and not a liberal you don't have a heart, if you're 39 and not a conservative you don't have a brain. :D

I've never met a republican who was actually able to defend their beliefs. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's political director has told a group of prominent conservatives that the president would soon publicly endorse a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Bay Buchanan, sister of former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, told Reuters she was one of several conservatives who heard the message from political director Karl Rove two weeks ago.
"We were told by Karl Rove that the president would support the constitutional amendment -- not just that he would endorse it but also that he would fight for it," Buchanan said.
Specifically, Rove told an alliance of conservatives known as the Arlington Group in a telephone conversation that Bush would back the amendment being put forward by Colorado Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave and that his statement would come "sooner rather than later."
The debate over gay marriage has heated up recently with a decision by San Francisco's mayor last week to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and a decision by the highest court in Massachusetts to strike down a ban on gay marriage.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush had not yet decided whether to support a constitutional amendment.
"It's something he continues to look at very closely. He has indicated that, if necessary, he would be prepared to support a constitutional amendment if activist judges continue to seek to redefine marriage," McClelland said.
"The only alternative would be the constitutional process, and the president has specifically said the legislation introduced by Congresswoman Musgrave reflects the principles which he has talked about."
The proposed amendment would reserve marriages solely for "unions between a man and a woman." It would allow state voters and legislatures to determine if they want to legalize civil unions between same-sex couples but would state that no court can require states to accept such civil unions.
Buchanan said she and colleagues were a little concerned that Bush had not yet spoken out in favor of the amendment.
"We had expected it by now. There have been several opportunities for the president to speak out since that time. We're not sure what he's waiting for," she said.
I guess my biggest question is what the hell the Rev is doing posting this stuff. Living in Idaho you could end up missing for this type of literature. Better watch yourself. :D
Wait until you earn more money. Then you may appreciate tax cuts to an extent, especially if you are a sole proprietor. Maybe Bush should not have gone so high up the income scale, but many people did get some needed relief.
