Teahupoo is ridiculous. It looks like that wave would kill you, how do they even get out there?

Do people sometimes paddle when it's not at it's biggest? Still seems like you'd die. I know nothing about surfing, just wondering about this wave.
Jeez, look at the balls on that one guy.Quote:

Finally got to see it tonight! Great flick!!!
I'm actually with you Tuffy, not sure why it was soooo revolutionary. to me in many ways some of the giant stuff at Jaws or for sure Noll at Waimea and really at Makaha are more amazing.
Teahupoo is an absolutely beautiful wave and he was in there deeep. Duct Tape, I agree with you that when that lip hits the water, the explosion is pretty intense. WOuldn't want to go over the falls on that one.
Ice, people have and do paddle surf Teahupoo regularly, just when its a wee bit smaller. As far as getting out, they boat out around the break and then there is a channel on either side of it, so its not like you have to paddle through the thing.
Great flick. Go check it out!
Damn I want some waves now...
Finally it came back to SLC; saw it last Friday night.
SICK!! Everyone should go see it.
Few things stick out in my head:
1. Dick Noll was/is the mang; stepping up to chit waaaay back in the day
2. Loved when they compared the heights of Mavs vs. Waimeai; you could really tell just how Wam pales to Mavs.
3. In the beginning of Laird's tow in sequence, one ride looked so saiiiiiiiiiiiiick; a big carving bottom turn up a super glassy face. Looked like he was arcing 'em up in AK.
A must see with alot of similarities to riding in AK; skiers will have no problem relating/enjoying this one. JUST GO!!!

Good movie - loved it. Great to see the piece on Mavericks - my hood. There was actually a shot of whole harbor from above that is the exact view I get when I hike behind my house. I see Jeff Clark in the local coffee shop now and again. Seems like a good guy (though has a rep with the ladies...). Grant Washburn used to date my housemate/landlady from the cool beach house I lived in down the road. Fun to see the local spots.
Mavericks is nuts. I have trouble surfing the tiny waves at Surfers Beach down the road, and the thought of being out in that nasty, scary wave, with reef and sharks and freezing temperatures...well, let's just say there's a reason only a handful of people surf there.
See the flick if you haven't - and see it on the big screen!

another thumbs up from me.... i saw it in SF last week with my cousin who is a big time surfer (read: surf bum, not some rockstar) earlier that day we had driven down the coast, though not as far as mavericks. now i really want to see mavericks in person!
