    Riding Giants

Saw Stacey Peralta's new flick about big wave surfing today at Sundance. It's super good.

Pretty much goes through origins to present day. Not sure why Hamilton's Teahupoo wave was the greatest ever, or why it "changed everything," but it was indeed sick. And amazing how glassy that wave was.

Anyhoo, when this film makes the rounds, y'all should see it.

    Thumbs up yes suh

saw it last night... mmmmm [lil jon]yyyaayyeeahhh!![/lj]

those 3d, diarama-esque shots really gave so much dimension to the wave, esp. seeing the mist hovering over the surface of the water from all the tumult. beautiful. and man that sidelong heli shot of hamilton was nothing short of sick. you get a perfect feel for the ridiculous amounts of speed he was travelling whereas with most angles it only seems like the rider is traversing and you forget about the forward momentum.

i bet everyone here who saw the movie was grinning when laird et al. were lamenting those long spells with no waves, and the only respite came when they were out on again. reading captain zero and seeing this movie is definitely hitting home as i and most people here translate their passion for surfing into our passion for skiing.

I haven't seen the movie, but some friends that love surfing have explained the Teahupoo wave being sooooo sick because, the way it jacks up so fast making it very difficult to catch. Also take a look at that pic again, that thing is breaking fucking 5 foot thick, talk about consequnces? jesh

I am pretty sure this wave was shown on Letterman last week. Hamilton was saying in the interview that there is live coral 6" under the water and a fall would rip you to shreds. I also saw a 60 Minutes interview with him, he said the same thing. That wave is nuts, he gets shot out like a bullet at the end.

Find a copy of "Laird" on DVD. Abso-friggin nuts. Not being a surfer (yet), I'm not up on who is cutting edge, how big has been surfed, etc., but the stuff he surfs is just insane. I get the feeling that others may be going bigger now, but Laird's really the pioneer in this stuff. And his foil-board-thingy is really crazy.

Also, on that Teahupoo wave, it looks real calm in that shot, but in about a second, the whole innards of that thing just explode and the blast of wind and water coming out of the tube is unbelievable. Somehow, Laird emerges out of all that still on his board.

You gotta see it, mang. 'Cause it ain't 5 feet thick, it's like 50 feet thick! Serious. When they show the Teahupoo wave from the side, it looks like no other wave in the world. It's a friggin' 40 foot tall CLIFF of water that just falls over. It really looks like one of those big Navajo plateaus from the side, then the lip starts going, and the whole cliff of water catapults over. I just saw the flick the other night. Two tips up.

I dug the Mavericks footage too. Jeff Clark surfed there for 15 YEARS BY HIMSELF??? What? That footage of him clinging to that big rock (forget the name) was nutso. All you see is the tip top of this rock, then the water sucks out and Jeff Clark is stuck to the side of the thing like Spiderman - leash and board holding him down.

I haven't been into surfing in many many years, but this flick rules.
