While I love the admiration; I have a couple of quesitons in mind.
1) The fact that you don't have to register to post is cool, but any old newschooler could log on and put a bid in. That could be good or bad. Good because it might raise the price of the item, bad because we might get a bunch of frauds. Most likely it will be the first comment....I don't think we'll get a lot of frauds.
2) I like the idea of doing it here on TGR because people know it. Others may think differently, however.
Not trying to be a downer, just throwing out my opinions.
I've had a few good thoughts on how to do this. I'll keep most of the details to myself until we decide this is a go; but right now I'm thinking I'd post a general thread about the auctions, ask Owens to make it sticky and post links to the actual autctions inside that thread. Then in gear swap, I'm thinking I'll make a distinct generic title like AUCTION #1. Start the bidding and stop it when I think the price is high enough and bidding seems to settle a bit.. That way there will be no sniping and people will simply bid what they can afford or want to pay.
Are we still putting stickers on the auction block too b/c I'd be down for some of those.
Maybe we should get an "auction" sticky, or make this thread a sticky.

Cool. Here's my current plan for the next 24 hours. I would like to give this thread some time to develop and get some more responses. So at 8:30 tomorrow am (eastern time) I will check this thread one last time, get the general concensus on using Steve's forum or TGR.
Then I'll make a completely seperate thread about donating gear/stuff and how to go about getting me good information. Seeing as this is developing very close to the 4th, I'm guessing lots of people will be away from the board (myself included)....so I'll keep the donation process going until after the fourth.
For now, I'm watching this thread develop for another 15 hours or so....then I'll report back. I'm interested to see what people think about using steve's forum....

Just another Idea for Raising Money, a local cyclist got hurt pretty bad with no insurance, so they started the Falllen rider fund, http://www.fallenriderfund.com they had a few group rides in which they raised a lot of money. One was a ride in Jim Thorpe PA which is famous for sick single track, although a lot of it is now shut down, the locals led rides of epic proportions on there reserved stashes, some of the sweetest single track i have ridden to date. I think we could put together a Fallen Skier fund site.. and do some similiar stuff with bike and ski events... Id be willing to put the site up and get it together. Thoughts???

Some thoughts
(1) we are coming up on a holiday weekend. Lots of peeps are taking off for vacation.Maybe plan on getting this rolling like July 6th or so.
(2) gear shipping...It seems to me that a large part of the proceeds are going to be eaten up by shipping first to a central location and then to the buyer.If at all possible, why not have the donator ship directly to the buyer, providing a tracking #. If payment is made through paypal, I'm pretty sure there is some protection for the buyer. Plus, maybe alot of donators will eat the shipping thereby sweetening the pot or maybe the seller will offer to split shipping costs.
(3) maybe have some regional coordinators to call the donator after the sale has been made. If one guy is doing this it could get overwhelming.
(4) take a page from ebay and put a" buy it now option" on all gear.
When you have all the deets, make an official Sticky thread, please. I'll do whatever you guys decide, with whatever logistics are easiest. I can donate gear, or money, or whatever - just make a new thread, por favor, when you decide.

I don't have a strong opinion on which website is used, I'd lean toward my home away from home - TGR.

- Donator Ships Item. Perhaps we'll set up a follow up system so we can assure goods get delivered in a timely and fair manner....though I don't think we'll have any problems.

edit: I would be happy to act as the central collection point for funds from the auction winners (paypal would probably work best), send out checks to the donators for their shipping costs if applicable, and then get the accumulated money from the auctions and the straight-up monetary donations to Nils.
