Still, point of thread: every time I go to Squaw I never fail to say "Holy schneikes" in response to a line somebody skied or drop in the park.
The simple answer is a little chair called KT22. When hauling ass, you can ski 6 laps per hour, or over 10,000 vertical feet of excellent training grounds per hour. Alot of us Squaw graduates feel Squaw is a great mountain to prep you for the big leauges. Also, what other mountain has an extreme bench designated for rad people only?
Squaw has the ripper crew going on a pow day more so than any other resort I have been to. It is absurd sometimes. However, I think Jackson may be equal or greater in total ripping factor, but in a mountaineering, hippy, high consequence, death line nowhere near the lift kind of way.
Hey, where's that #6 there located? I'm pretty sure I know but maybe it's just a coinsidence.Quote:

I've spent time skiing all over and every time I come home to Squaw I realize that the Squaw local scene smokes all other local scenes (w/the exception of Grand Montets). No where else do you consistently have your random local ski bum, doctor, attorney or real-estate agent throwing backs off of 30 footers and skiing technical lines. Jackson, Alta, 'Brid, CB, WB all produce really great skiers but not nearly as many great skiers as Squaw. SV has 400" to 500" of snow that sticks to 55 degree pitches, technical lines with decent run outs, viewable lines that can be scoted out, the 'sades and of course - KT. On KT you can log 70k feet a day of good terrain (from high speed open lines to billy goat technical lines).
Here's a quick reminder of what Squaw is all about:

yeah thats sooooooooooo much fun, skiing with 10,000 bay area dickheads you cant even buy a fucking cabin for a family getaway for under 300,000$$ fucking dollars
yeah squaw rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

alpental is much gnarlier terrain, ask squirrel99
It's gotta be the race/freeski coaches BBQing at the shack!
I thought about mentioning that too, but Basom skis Squaw...Quote:

what i don't get about squaw is . . . how the fuck do you drop $1200 or whatever for the pass every year?
i mean i guess they probably give basom one to maintain status as best resort
but if you're not a dentist bogner dragging your fur-coat laden trophy wife down the 'blue square that really should be a black', to get to the ice rink and shopping promenade, wtf?
Squaw rips more than K'wood I think... I have to give WB top ranks of the places I've been (all out West - no rockies yet) Alpental has some rippers, but it is so small! So here's what I think...
1. WB - if you get tired of inbounds/park rippers, there's the immense BC & so much vert. it is insane. When it is snowing down to the base, this place is untouchable - P to C just a bit off the boundary line is nutz-o, CBC on Blackcomb side = hotsnozz. And they're putting in another quad in the Alpine!!! Piccolo will open that whole area up - can't wait...
2. Squaw - Pretty sick riders all around park/pipe/huckminsterfullers/big lines off KT etc.
3. Mammoth - SICK park riders, best I've seen hands down.
4. K'wood - saw this year's World Extreme Ski Champs... but I think like at Mammoth, this mountain is squat & wide
5. I like Alpine, but even I can do most stuff there, so it barely cracks the top 5
6. Crystal/Stevens WA - tied, I like 'em both, Crystal req. more hiking/waiting for the shuttle to bring you back up to the base! At least at Stevens, people will pick you up along Hwy. 2!!!
7. Alpental - Crazy lines and close to Sea-town, usually some pretty hot park riders next door, but so small!
As you all can tell, I gotta check out WY, CO, UT etc...! Oh, and I don't like Heavenly.

That's pretty much it. Squaw skiers get comfortable in rowdy terrain because of the steepness, the relatively stable snowpack that puts them in that terrain every pow/windbuff/corn day, and the short pitches with good runouts. It's a playground. That breeds a lot of players, and when others come and see the raised level, they see that as the standard and want to ski harder. It's a standard progressive cycle. Some don't like the sense of competition for lines, but it makes you charge hard from the opening bell, and that simply makes you better...I like having lines to myself in the backcountry, but I also like ripping line after line with the mindset of 'if I don't get it now, someone else will.' That type of day ends with a lot accomplished.Quote:

So often at the beginning of the season I imagine being someone who just moved to Squaw, witnessing what's going on around them on the first powder day. It can be impressive. More than anything, I view Squaw as a training ground, and for that it is ideal.
