I can't fault those epic guys for their obsession with angulation. We have our technique gurus, like gordy and nobis and moles, over here. And at camp they all talk about angulation, but with regards to more than just groomers. Their perspectives on angulation are Olympic caliber insights applied to big mountain skiing. And it all makes perfect sense.
I dunno Leeroy - I'm sure that alot of the epic dudes are really awesome skiers. After all- Highway Star posts on Epic
In all honesty i bet alot of those guys could ski circles around me - but i am still rather sucky

You're flat wrong. I stand up for TGR, but you fail to see how similar the Bears can be. Right now, they are holding the Epic Ski Academy at Snowbird and Alta. Starting 2/3/06 they have the "gathering". It starts at Snowbasin Friday, and continues at Deer Valley, PCMR, Canyons and whereever for the Saturday - Tuesday. A large number of "bears" are also "maggots" and ski Bros, Mantras, Gotamas, Legends, Volants (Spats are notably under-represented) and can ski you into the ground. I give you the same advise I give them. Get to know the community before you dis them.Quote:

Being banned from Epic wouldn't matter much right now. Yesterday was my b-day, I ate too much cake, was up until 4am with a sugar high. Not much was going on here so I surfed around over there. I got pissed reading the threads because they have their heads in their asses sometimes. I mean, if you like your salad tossed thats one thing, but some of what they spew is mindblowing.
Leeroy, yeah, I reposted that. I shoulda made it more obvious that the topic had been played out already... I was trying to get at that.
I've only met one mag (baseweldr on tuesday) and it was a humbling experience, I've meant to post about it. Even though I haven't skied with many of you, the stoke, the insight, the shootin the shit... thats good times. I wish I had the time and money to get out more and contribute to the stoke because half of what I say is useless anyway.

I don't know much about Epic other than that the majority of them seem to like groomers. And I would probably go there for advice on ski technique, but I'd definitely come here for advice on gear. And again, that's just my perspective.
My problem with a lot of EpicSki folk (doesn't apply to everybody there) is that they are so focused on technique and equipment. Technique and equipment are means to an ends. If you chase after technique/the "best" equipment endlessly, you lose sign of why that stuff matters at all - that "I'm so stoked I want to shiz in my pants" feeling you get when skiing.
TGR is a collection of people who care more about that sweetness you feel that makes skiing what it is than technique. I'm already a better skier that I used to be because mag posts about their powder trips, backcountry adventures, etc. in order to chase that feeling leave me so STOKED. When I ski now, I chase after that same feeling instead of worrying about how to "angulate my skis properly".
Technique and equipment should always be secondary to getting stoked. That's why for me, EpicSki will always be secondary to TGR.

This I agree with. "Anal". I have skied with maggots and bears. Both communities share in common gapers and skiers that make me look like one. I love the stoke over here. A trip report over there gets one or two responses and a comment like "You seem to be too far back". If you want to get the EpicSki equivalenet of Jonged, post a picture or video. Here, its like the cheerleading section at the biggest game of the year. Shit, those guys were dissing Jamie Pierre's huck. Huge difference. Get your game on, its ski season!Quote:

My ego got taken down at least twenty notches on Wednesday when I had a clinic to get ready for my cert 1. Cert 1 is not all that, I thought it would be the easiest thing ever.
But - I have to ski slow for them. Tidy was the word used, which made me feel a little ill to my stomach. Tidy? I really did get chewed out for how fast I skied - in front of everyone else in the clinic. And this is on my small park skis which will hardly even run. I look at the skis they ride, grown men on 160 length and it turns my stomach too. Park skis is as far as I can bring myself to go in that direction. They even have a giant pile of snowlerblades that we can check out to teach on if we like. :rolleyes:
And I simply despise a wide stance. Sorry, but that's the truth, I think it's just gay. And I don't like arms wider than elbows. It feels and looks gay to me. And I like my thumbs in, not up. But I don't take pole plants all that seriously.
On the bright side, I'm practicing this thing called a "carved uphill arc" and it's a pretty interesting feeling when your skis hook up and start railing. Pretty cool.
And they are into good independant motion in the lower body, from the hips all the way down to the toes. This is an area I can improve for sure.
Anyway, being told I don't ski right for an entire day made it neccessary to go and ski a couple of feet of blower as fast as my Explosivs would go. Now that was fun. I haven't done smaller hucks that you can just carry all the speed down without bombholing too much lately either. So that was really fun too.
We do our thing, they do theirs... I did a season last year in Zermatt, which is a resort infested with EpicSki types. They never leave the piste and spend hours videoing themselves honing their techniques. "Man you gotta get some carving skis" is one of the first things somebody said to me there. They'll kick your ass on moguls and as you burn down a red/black run they'll be well behind you but doing it in a hellofalot more style. At first I thought they were all a big joke, now I can sort of respect that some of them love to ski as much or more than I do, they just get into different sides of the sport. And even learned from them and my skiing has improved because of it.
A chaotic, anything-goes forum like TGR is bound to come from a group that likes the chaotic, anything-goes nature of freeriding whereas a highly moderated, boring, and anal (but also highly informative) forum like GapicSki from a group that likes the groomed and patrolled, uniform nature of pistes.
Look at it this way: when everybody does freeriding, you get Chamonix - it gets tracked out in 10 minutes while the pistes stay groomed all day. Or go to Zermatt - the pistes are jam packed but the off piste is pow pow pow all the fucking time. Thank god for the pisters.
Most know me as a (very) active member over "there". I was somewhat active at the old Powder site and just re-regestered here not too long ago after lurking for a while. I like both sites and I think there is a place for both. Do I have Metrons? Yep and I love them. I also have my Fat Bastards. My history with Flexons and Kryptons is well documented and have helped quite a few from both sites.
As far as the quality of skier at either site, I am sure the 80/20 rule applies. 80% of the posters at both sites talk more shit than they can back up. 20% can actually ski well.
LOL, what is funny is this is the type of thread that would usually have gotten blasted here years ago. But with the success of this site and it is a great site, it has gotten toned down a bit, a result of its success.
We don't have to do hugs and kisses, do we?
I still thank my lucky stars every single day that I'm here and not there and that maggots taught me about really skiing. The heart of it.

from your reaction, I'd say that you're off the mark in some ways, and right on target in others.
off the mark -- teenagers or juvenile adults. no, they are just people who have a different flavor of humor than you seem to prefer. nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't make them immature. some people prefer the bland comedy of someone like Ellen deGeneres, while others prefer more insult-laden humor. if you don't like the insult humor, probably not a good idea to stick around there.
right on target -- you are inclined to avoid that place based on your experience there. I'd say this is a dead bull's eye. it sounds like a bad fit for you.

I feel you on the PSIA shit. I had to go through it a couple of years ago, and I hated it. They ski like pussies. But the payoff is pretty big, you get paid more to ski with kids. And the better your certification level, the better skiers you get to ski with. And believe me, kids that are taking lessons have no desire to learn how to seperate everything perfectly, or to angulate, they just want to rip. So you can throw most of that crap out the window and just ski with people and help make corrections where you see them.
But yes, carving can be fun, especially when the entire mountain is a sheet of ice from a never ending rain/freeze cycle. But it is nowhere near as fun as just going out to the mountain and doing whatever it is you want to with your day.
I used to be on Epic a lot. Now, I hardly go there at all. Too much bullshit and spewing. Everybody is a critic. Too much politics. At least, here, things are said with "a grain of salt" and in a joking manner. Over at epic, the "technique" people think WTF they are, the "witty" people think that they are the "cat's meow" and there are many personalities that I don't identify with (although, there are some good doods there, too). Here, everyone knows where everyone else is coming from, and people don't personally fuck with others...unless they really deserve it. Just my $.02
