What is wrong over at TGR?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It may be me, or my advanced age, but I don't really understand the mentality of some of the posts at TGR. Are they are 20-something punks, or just juvenile adults??

from your reaction, I'd say that you're off the mark in some ways, and right on target in others.

off the mark -- teenagers or juvenile adults. no, they are just people who have a different flavor of humor than you seem to prefer. nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't make them immature. some people prefer the bland comedy of someone like Ellen deGeneres, while others prefer more insult-laden humor. if you don't like the insult humor, probably not a good idea to stick around there.

right on target -- you are inclined to avoid that place based on your experience there. I'd say this is a dead bull's eye. it sounds like a bad fit for you.

i think someone should copy and post that in the epicski public forum, then we can all answer "nyskier"s question.

I'm a member too. Posted what I posted a few months ago in response to another thread on the same friggen topic.

    http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=32971

There is a world of difference between here and TGR. I used to be an avid reader of Epic ski. Daily, hourly, Heck, every minute. I tried TGR, thought they were crazy, always bickering, couldn't stand it.

I tried again about a year later. This time I really sat and read for a while and everything started to make sense with time. What I realized is that TGR is more about friends giving each other some crap. What they have is a community. A super close knit group of friends who ski together, hang out together, eat Thanksgiving dinner together. They open their doors to anyone and are excited (stoked) to get out and make turns with fellow mags (maggots, forums members).

Its true, they don't do alot of the things that go on here on epic. They don't constantly talk about technique and up-unweighting. They don't rely on administrators and time outs when people get out of hand. From what little I've been reading here I've gathered that Gonzostrike and wbroun have had to take some time off. Thats petty, childish even.

The age is, on average,a touch younger at TGR. There are College Kids, Ski bums and highschoolers. But a large part of them are computer tech's, dentists, your average joe and the occasional pirate. You might think they are irrational, but when a highschooler complained about his parents they gave him very real advice. The members are also of a different mindset. Their knees can still take harsh landings. They run Extreme ski camps (Gordy Peifer) They have tons of pictures posted in Powder (Grant Gunderson). They have lurkers (just hang out and watch, don't post much) like Chris Davenport, Kent Kreitler. There are many more industry superhero's who I don't know about and who probably don't care to be named because, when the lifts close, all they are skiers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, I can only try to read epic ski. I'm a supporter and I have a hard time sticking around this place. Why? Because every post is about the same thing. You try to do a good thing like the free gear thread from TGR and people mess it up by having conversations. Its a listing of free gear that no one can see because people ask questions, give thanks for what they got, bla bla bla. No wonder no one posts in it and it gets lost.

The language maybe different, but the words mean the same thing. I'm sure you all went through it just the same. You may think they are arrogant or mean to newbies (new posters), Gapers (same thing, people who stand around with their mouth hanging open staring at things) JONGS (Jerk off newbie gapers). But thats how they police. Instead of making Dchan move half the threads on the General ski page, they flame. People learn where to post.

Is faster better? whats your favorite shell? Come on people. How many times can these questions be asked without them getting old? Honestly. Tell them to do a search, don't let people be lazy. Best wax for ESA? Softening Boots? DO A SEARCH JONG.

Its two different worlds. You may fit into this one, they (we) might fit into that one. You like your metrons, they like their Bro Models. You like Resorts with nice hotels, they like backcountry. You read ski, with its refined tastes, wine lists, car reviews and instruction. We like Powder, with its powder, Trip Reports, and amazing photos.

    Its neither here nor there.

They live to ski. People here ski, but do you LIVE TO SKI? Forget about making a perfect turn, forget about how fast you are going, what color your coat is and does it look good on camera.
Go jump something, Go straight for a bit. Turn if you want to turn.

    Do what you want,
    not what your instructor wants,
    not what epicski wants.

    just go out and ski

Please tell me the dirt was brushed off your shoulder after making that post.

That's a pretty good explanation of who we are, mang. Most good, sire, most good.

I used to subscribe to SKI. Then a few issues later, I realized it sucked. Now I wear my Powmag hoodie almost everywhere. I used to post at Epic, too. But there's no sense of community, as Xtr pointed out. Good show, xtr.

There is no real sense of community- people aren't super interested in skiing with other "Bears" and on top of all that- all they do is discuss why most skiers can't "carve" as well as them.

Yet somehow I'm willing to bet I can carve on fat skis better tham most of them on race boards. I'm a pretty crappy skier by this places standards too.

Oh, and Pickels, your explanation of the TGR mindset seems really familiar. I think I actually found it one of the three or four times I've taken a look at epic. (For some reason I think this topic was brought up here before and maybe your post was refered to then) I thought it was insightful then as now. I also think that the "bears" do not live to SKI. Instead of dedicating large chunks of thier lives to spending as much time on as best snow as they can get too, they would rather enjoy a nice meal and a good wine at lunch, enjoy the view, ski a few runs, head down if it gets a little cold and snowy, and spend some quality time with their family in the evening at thier fine resort. I have no problems whatsoever with people like this. They are enjoying themselves and having a good time. They also are the people that pay for the timeshares and hotel rooms (even if they are driving up real estate prices) that allow the resorts to have enough well trained patrol to safely open steep burly areas the day of a storm, not to mention put in such things as high speed lifts.
Besides, I think epic will be a great place to sell some of the short soft skinny skis I have lying around.

Indeed. I tried reading their 'instruction and technique' thread one day, all the talk of angulation and weighting and turn initiation taught me nothing and left me sort of woozy and needing a beer.

Is it wrong to get frustrated with all the kids who "think they like might be going snowboarding once this weekend"? Is this an immature characteristic or will I continue to shake my head and sometimes grow angry with people like this?

I feel bad about doing this, making a distinction between skiers, and people who just call themselves skiers. Is this wrong, or do any of you guys feel the same way?

[/semi-hijack. a lot of the "skiers" here at cu would likely fit in at epic, not here]
