They (the FTC, FBI, and local police) don't really care to catch anyone. The person who tried to buy a computer lives in apt 4c on East 138 St, NY NY. How about that? I called every law enforcement agencies, but they don't care to bust one dude, they only want the big fish who distribute stolen identities by the thousands.
I have a lot of detail about the guy who tried to buy the house, but once I obtained it, I was already aware that the law didn't care. I told the cops, but didn't waste too much energy.
The whole identity theft thing is a real ratfuque.
If some bastard tried to steal from me, and I knew their address, I would ensure that they'd get inundated with mail/products they didn't want. Fill out those "Sweepstakes" cards they have in Chinese restaurants. They'll be swimming in junkmail in no time.Quote:

Find out their phone # - since you know where they live - and crank call at all hours of the day. Post this story and their name/address/phone # on as many internet sites as possible. Alert Howard Stern - he'll get some of his idiots pestering this dude as well.

My roommates recently signed me up for a bunch of junk mail (there was a pretty funny joke going on). they are now both members of the Nation of Islam, and they recieve plus-size lingerie catalogs.
Afterthought: the reason i havent fuqued with the guy is that he can really break me if he wants to. i'm hoping that he got scared when he tried to buy the computer, and is now stealing a different person's identity. if i pss him off, who knows what will happen to me.

Our apartment was broken into about a year after we moved here. Among other things they stole three books of checks.
We made a police report when we discovered the burglary. (We were on a houseboat on Lake Powell when it happened.)
Soon our checks started showing up all over town. We received a telephone call from a grocery store. Someone had attempted to pass a check but walked out when asked for ID. They had this person on video. I called the police gave them the case number and this information.
Soon more and more checks started coming back. Over the course of a week or so I attempted a bit of investigation myself. I started calling the places that had taken my check. After about a week I got a check back from a chinese restaurant. I called the place and asked them about. Turns out it had been a delivery order. I eagerly asked them if they had an address, sure enough they did.
At that point I hit the internet and found the telephone number to this address. I called up and immediately asked the person who answered why they were passing my checks all over town. "That was my roomate!" the woman stammered out. I politely told her, "that's ok, the police will straighten it out."
I called the police and told them my new information. Two weeks later I get a call from them asking the name of the grocery store. I tell them.
I call back a week later and it seems they were too late getting to the grocery store, they had taped over the tape. I asked them about the delivery. Apparently the had gone over there and questioned somebody to no avail. And that was the end of their involvement.
Anyways, yeah Cross, it sucks. My wife was making trips to the bank just about every day. As people have mentioned you have to get an affadavit of forgery on EVERY check. Hopefully they haven't written too many. We ended up having over 40 checks written on our account.
It's really amazing how easy this is for the people that do it.

Short version. Go to Dan's today to buy some chow with my debit card. They say the account no longer exists. What?? Yep I had something similiar happen to me. In 1988 at Camp Pendleton my wallet got stolen at the JRC (Joint Reception Center) before I shipped out to Okinawa. I really didn't think anything of it. I spent darn near 2 1/2 years over seas. Durning Gulf round 1, I got a chance to call home. My mom told me that the Sheriff was at the house the day before with a warrant for my arrest and with papers to take me to New Jersey to stand trial for attempted murder. Seems the dickhead that stole my wallet went around the country impersonating me. The following is what he did.
1. Got loan out of Dallas Texas for 5K
2. Got 4 student loans for a JC in Phili
3. Got a DUI
4. Got a speeding ticket in Iowa
5. Had an affair with a married woman in New Jersey. Wife moved out of the house and in with the guy pretending to be me. Husband came over. Guy pretending to be me went back to husbands house and beat the living shit out of the guy with a baseball bat, putting him into a coma for 2 weeks. Guy pretending to be me fled after being released on bond. Guy pretending to be me was 5'8" 172lbs black hair and brown eyes. (I was 6'5" 225 at the time with blonde hair and blue eyes).
*NOTE* dumbass NJ cops never sent the info into the federal system. Since there was a war going on they would have found out that this idiot was using someone elses ID
6. Husband that got the shit kicked out of him tried to sue me in 1992 for 3.5 million large (suit got thrown out, duh)
So ya I feel your pain. And to this day I'm still dealing with ITT financial out of Dallas for that stupid loan. They are still trying to claim it was me.

I hope you followed up on these clues... and arrived with baseball bat in hand.
