Correction, he's been grinding them so that they hike better for years. I don't think there's ever been any indication that they approximated DIN.

Note that RR also spends most of his time in lightweight tele boots. He's a fine tele skier, but he doesn't put anywhere near the stress on the boot/binding interface that today's agressive telemarkers do.
