Snowboard equivalent of TGR?

Oh man, I totally disagree. I've found a ton of differences in snowboard equipment. For example:

Boards: cap vs. sidewall, sidecut, taper, swingweight;
Bindings: durability of ladder straps (btw, some of them grind down a lot faster than others), ankle strap construction and comfort, toe strap, cap strap, fast-fit strap, metal vs plastic vs. carbon fiber, ratchet effectiveness, highback adjustment; not to mention step-ins which vary significantly by manufacturer
Boots: boa vs laces vs speed zone

I think skiing equipment is a lot more standardized than snowboard equipment. So while snowboarders may not talk about pre-release, we've still got a whole lotta tech to talk. Its just that the numbers here don't support frequent or in-depth conversations.

there, i'm helping :D

and i think there's tons of snowboard techie talk that could happen...such as. . . my friend was trying to explain the nose of the burton fish to me, and i think i'm gonna need to see it to understand.

edit: what about biglines?? i don't really read the forums there, i just check in for the articles once in a while, but they are both ski and snowboard forum as well, is that no good?

and still feel that the differencies are more subtle (but no less relevant)
than on the twoplank side..
As more people wander around this board,the more people will eventually mingle up.
That the board exodus(ied?) from the Powdermag forum to here TGR is perhaps making it easier for some to open up here, since perhaps this board is not as "ski" as the former one.

mmmmmmmm, Burton Fish. I love my Burton Fish! Best powder board ever!

The Burton Fish has an extra wide nose, a wide waste, and a pin tail. The bindings are mounted very close to the tail. You also ride a Fish much shorter than any other board. For example, I ride a 168-68 all mountain board, a 160-162 freestyle board, and my Fish is a 160.

Here's a picture (you can't see it in the picture, but the nose is a little pointy.):

Not cupped, and I wouldn't say rounded. But the nose is turned up at a slightly higher angle than a regular snowboard. Combined with the super wide nose, the pin tail, and the set back stance, it keeps the nose up in deep powder without the usual back leg burn that you get from overweighting the tail on a regular board. It also gives it a super surfy feel and it turns on a dime. Equally great for bowls and trees.

and for the rest y'all, i'm all for tech snowboard talk....too often boarders don't embrace the tech discussions. seems like we've been getting a few more boarders around here who know their stuff (bcrider, edub, baconzoo, etc) and are willing to chime in. it just takes the initiative to get the ball rolling.

WHAT? you've never heard of Dr. Monata? His writings from the late 80's changed the way people looked at snow surfing. They had a revoluionary effect on riders such as Tom Burt, Craig Kelly, Peter Line, Noah Salasnek, and Terje, to name just a few.

Dr. Montana's thoughts on nose/tail design, his analysis on sidecut radius permutations, his personal notes regarding "soul riding" and "immortality".....simple poetry, I tell you. Of course, no mention of Dr. Montana would be complete without mentioning his tireless work against the baseless binding. Boy, he saved us that time.

lynx - sounds like your friend thinks he has a spoon nose. that is cupped. morrow used to make them - not sure if they still do.

have been boarding for a long while now and have had lots of experience with gear. i think skiing gear is more interesting though. i find a wide, high performance freeride board and stick with it (salomon W5/forecast w/carbon torsion thingies for 6 years now). whatever burton freestyle-ish bindings are on sale when i need them. i feel like there is a lot more crappy equipment out there in the snowboarding market and not a clear creme de la creme (no volkl type manufacturer - and yes, i know volkl makes boards - i think they suck). i guess part of it is that board width is really just a factor of foot size and because of that, sidecut can't really be f-ed with dramatically. stiffness is more a personal taste/feel issue than a function/speed/blast through poop issue like it is with skis (although obviously you are not going to be able to rail carves through crud on a noodle)...at least that is how i look at it.

i used to be super up-to-speed on board equipment...i.e. when they put kick on tails or stopped making swallowtails standard or mass-produced boots just for snowboarding...but once airwalk freeride boots and burton freestyle bindings came out (must be 12ish years ago now), i have basically been trying to find the closest match to those i can. just bomber and functional and well built. i have cycled through various boards along the way and just find whatever works for me. burton was the clear leader for a while, then i was on o-sin, then nitro, then lib techs for a long while, now salomon.

the only real step forward i can see within the last five years are those toe-cap binding straps - although i hear that your forefoot comes up a bit though, so no good for me. i crank em as tight as i can. and palmer plates are pretty cool, although i can't really tell if they are helping me out or not.

i think beyond basic functionality - i.e. those bindings break, these don't - snowboarding gear is very much a personal preference thing - just getting used to your ride and how to work turns, etc. - while ski gear is more technical in a basic construction sense - i.e. more parts, functions, etc. - but also more technically designed for certain conditions, circumstances, and preferences.

also the fact that carving boards are about as versitile as mopeds plays into it...

what do you mean? for example, i see all kinds of inconsistent sidecuts on wider width big mountain boards (168-174 cm and 25cm+ wide). long big mtn. single radius cuts like 10-11m+ on Salomon's and Glissades, and then the same length board by Burton or Nitro with a 8.3-9m sidecut and anything from single to triple radius sidecuts.

yet most people don't make this a pivotal part of their riding/buying decision. or talk that much about it. bummer, i think it's interesting.

i kind of disagree on stiffness not affecting function/speed/poop blasting power. i totally think that you can change the performance of a board with the stiffness. i could be wrong though. i'm open....

There was a thread on Couloir a while back where someone had split a Fish. It looked sweet - but no inside edges. Wish I had the disposable income to try it.

edit: ahhh, holy crap. I'm a moron - it was bcrider: Couloir -Split Fish

I also talked to a Burton rep, (geez, it may even have been JG, but I can't remember now) and I know someone at Burton did one in house. No further info on that.

I've been testing Burton since 92. I'm still rocking these step-in hybrids for a second season. Because the step-in gets me there first, beyautches, you be like "Damn, he gutted this chute" It's a great challange to beat players off the line on a pow day. Being a boarder means I have to represent even more. :yourock:

There was a thread a while back on Couloir that showed a split Fish. It was a friend/poster that did it himself and it doesn’t have inside edges. (no biggie in pow, just not as durable over the long haul)

The thread you linked is mine from last year and it shows my Burton Split Fish, with inside edges. Ironically I also work with JG and this board is probably the board you heard about. I’ve been stoked on it! It’s a really fun board if you like to turn and rip the f*ck out of powder. :the_finge
