It wasn't meant to be interpreted as just a money decision. This accident cost him a lot more than money. His life was screwed up for quite a while after he decide to drive home that night. Taking a taxi while not cheap monetarily speaking it is a better choice than taking an unnecessary risk with life.
Drinking & driving isn't anything to take lightly (nor is driving under the influence of other psychoactive substances), but I am having a hard time beleiving that those who are ready to crucify bag's friend aren't guilty of the same behaviors.

IMHO, this thread should turn more towards prevention than blame; and yeah that means smokers as well as drinkers even though I think the effect is less of a factor.
Unless, you've never been in a situation where you could have done the same no throwing stones. Not saying that some chastisement and words of wisdom aren't in order from bagtagely but I've driven when I shouldn't, I've aged and I don't do as much stupid shit anymore.
If you've never driven when you would have been legally DUI then by all means let 'er rip. If not, I think bagtagely can handle it.
Let all of us use the pics as a lesson.

T-dave I think there is a difference with being leagally fucked up, and driving the wrong way on the free-way, fucked up.
People get leagally fucked up pretty often, but not being able to negotiate a freeway--that is like puking out the window drunk.

But I know there's a lot of drinkers here and I for one know that I've been a little more over the line than a little less over it a time or two. Clearly wrecking a vehicle into oncoming freeway traffic qualifies as drunk a lot too far over the line. Time for him to do a serious reassessment of his drinking and driving decision matrix. The law in many places will hammer you for drinking as little as ONE BEER and driving.

I view DUI as just one of the many hazzards of navigating the nation's roadways. I for one was almost killed just a week ago in my aging and not so safe (seatbelts no worky) BII when a woman completely blew a red light and had I not looked over and not driven into the intersection that would've been it or at least really painful. How about the stupid people that try to avoid hitting squirrels and rabbits and mice etc... driving TOO FAST on icy roads? Bottom line, everyone's got to take some responsibility for knowing their surroundings and driving DEFENSIVELY 100% of the time. Your safety is in YOUR HANDS! My dad always told me that there is NO accident that isn't just a little bit your fault.

I can honestly say I have never driven while under the influence. That being said I have willingly rode with someone who should not have been driving and said nothing. Therefore I do not think can rip on anyone who drove under the influence.

I can stand some guy yapping on his phone or whatever, but what I cant stand are this macho steakhead tough guys who think they can make it home if theyre drunk. My good friend was hit head on by a drunk driver, my girlfriends dad broke his legs and multiple ribs from a drunk driving accident and will never walk normally again, and I know countless friends of friends who were killed in drunk driving accidents. I'll have to disagree with your dad on this one. And yes I am speaking from experience,all 3 million+ miles of it. Sometimes your just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
bagtagley - I'd hold off on railing on your friend. I'm sure he knows how badly he screwed up. Talk with him about the accident and if he's not COMPLETLY full of remorse about it or doesn't express that he knows how badly he screwed up, then lay into him. While I certainly don't condone drunk driving, people make mistakes. I've definitely made my share. Try to look at the situation from his perspective. He totalled his car. His insurance will most likely drop him and he'll have a very difficult time find another insurance company to take him on. He'll most likely lose his license. He has a DWI on his driving record. He's injured.
If all of the above hasn't opened his eyes to how big a screw up he made, then you have every right to let him know what you think. On the other hand (and this is what I'm hoping), he is most likely doing a pretty good job of beating himself up about the incident and you don't want to kick a friend while he's down.

We've all (yeah, most likely even you) done stupid stuff in our lives (it's not just drinking and driving that can cost lives, remember. If you're going to dump your friends when they've done something stupid, you'll likely be facing a long, lonely life. Since I wasn't the only one to comment negatively on your post, I hope you absorb the fact that EVERYONE makes mistakes and some actually deserve a chance to redeem themselves, not be ostrasized by the people close to them. I do believe that drinking and driving is a major problem and we, as a society, need to address it, but having an attitude like yours isn't going to accomplish this. Oh, and about my not having any real life experience - I lost my little brother to a drunk driver.
Well, he got served the papers for the DUI. Also, found out the the bus only had 2 people on it, the driver and his son. Apparently there was a 3rd vehicle semi-involved (the bus swerved to avoid my friend and cut off a van in the right lane). Apparently the people in the van were a band on their way home from playing that night. They know a buddy of mine and told him that my friend (the drunk driver) was apologizing non-stop and his only concern (until he passed out from injuries) was the condition of the other people. Not that any of that makes the situation okay, just some background info.
Looks like there won't be any laying into any time soon (if ever). 2 days after being released, he is back in the hospital. Infection has spread rapidly, and so they're leaving him open to try and get rid of it. I'm no doctor-type, but apparently it's pretty serious. I've spoken with the him a few times, and he never really gets off the subject of how he could have killed those people. He's really hard to talk to, and obviously knows he's fucked up, so I didn't really need to go into that. At this point I just hope he's able to recover.
That's shity Bag. I hope he recovers soon.

ok ok I had a shitty/stressfull week last week and I kind of took out a lot of my anger here....so im sorry I was a dick and all, but that doesnt change the fact the drunk driving pushes my limits of tolerance for other people.

As some of you know, my mother and oldest brother were killed by a drunk driver 2 years ago. They both had lots to live for, but someone else made a choice that took their lives away. It really seems so senseless. We all like high risk activities, but we should only put ourselves at risk.

Also, really sorry to hear about your loss.
I'd just like to state for the record, that I'm not looking for sympathy from anyone (for me or for him), or even answers. This is just an extremely tough situation for me, and I felt like sharing.
