Snowboard.com or Freeskiing.com have good category layouts for gear review, age groups, travel, resorts

I want to have users upload one trick wonders. I'll have to create dropdowns for inputting keywords like:

1080

BS
Ect. It's tough to standardize everyone's keywords. I have a 5mb limit due to a PHP server config set by my host. It was a 2mb and I got em' to up it.

Scary how much alike those two sites are....especially as one of them claims itself as "skiings independent magazine".....
TR section by region would be pretty sweet. Divide it up by state and date or location. This would be kind of cool for institutional memory or quick research on an area you would like to ski.
I like the idea of having a representative from various resorts/states give a snow report. Kind of like how steamboat and jackson hole do their snow reports. I think it's called the "straight talk" snow report or something like that. It's basically a local's take on the snow conditions.

I would think an interesting addition to resort reviews would be a "local's info" section. Not the usual resort marketing but actual input from locals where the best spots to hit are. That way they limit how much info they want to divulge yet we still know something other then just hitting those extreme double blacks...

Yep - eq reviews, Blurred. We lost countless thousands of firsthand reviews over at Pooder. Some of that was invaluable.
Pretty easy to create navigation for it. Rather than breaking it out by equipment TYPE, break it out by Manufacturer. Sub-menus from there. ie:
A."Select a Manufacturer" (insert list here) = Rossi
B. "Select a Category" (skis, boots, poles, misc)
C. "Select Model" and/or "Search Model" (maybe just keep current-year eq up top) and have the ability to search by keyword for specific models or previous years..Clicking here would take readers to user-written reviews and the ability to add their own.
Give users the ability to add a Manufacturer, category and/or model.
It would seem to me that this section would comprise a large portion of the initial work for the site, but once the structure is in place, users will "build" it - should rapidly become (relatively) self-sufficient.
I've extended the offer in the past to the PM Gear guys as well as others, and it still stands..You need a hand with HTML or any OTHER part of site building and/or structure, lemme know.
You do realize this is an absolutely ginormous project in terms of development time, storage requirements, bandwidth and maintenance, right?
And when it's done, it's going to have a ton of overlap with a lot of established sites (pic hosting = biglines, etc.) and it will take a lot to make those sections work as well as the pre-existing sites do.
Just a heads up that this project is going to be way bigger than you think, if you do it well.

As far as putting in time, I have basically 7 months before next winter to get it fully fired up and working. I have 1558 posts here, you very conservatively say that each one took 5 minutes to write up, etc. That's 130 hrs that I could have used for the website....this does not include the 400 hours I've probably spent ready AKPM posts....;)
If the site will be successful with all these factors, it is worth the time. Were there's a will, there's a way....

Is that 5mb imposed by upload_max_filesize? If so, look at the PHP documentation, it can be changed by either the ini OR PHP_INI_PERDIR - so you can get round it using .htaccess (I'm making presumptions on the part of your host here though, they may not allow .htaccess files).Quote:

If they do, however, just create a file called '.htaccess' with 'php_value upload_max_filesize <byte value, eg. 100mb =104,857,600>' and you should be able to overide those restrictions.
2Mb isn't a suprise though, that's the default setting...

I know this is two posts in a row, but different topics. I'd help if you need - I'm perfectly happy doing backend stuff (No jokes, biatches) but not so hot (right now) on the design front. I think despite Phunk's pessimism, as long as you take a good amount of time planning the technical details (What language your going to use, what d/b software, how are the different parts of the site going to interact, how is data [such as images] going to be sorted, how are you going to impose administrative control), then the actual implementation shouldn't take too long, especially if you get a lot of the help from the community.
If you don't mind sharing, what are the specs of your host? As long as they give you access to PHP and MySQL (And of course you have enough space) this should be relatively easy to do :-)
