Thread: Your website is coming......

    Your website is coming......

I've asked this question before, but procrastinated getting the website afloat. I have the domain. I have the host. The designer is waiting on my final requests.

I've taken your input, and I plan to have a website with-

    1. lots of, YOUR PHOTOS! LOTS!

    2. kiss that Denmark website video host goodbye, I'm paying out of my own pocket for a place to host SKI VIDS free, with enough bandwidth to not worry about limit usage per day.

These are a few things that will make the website truly usable and worth while. Please offer me some more of your suggestions, I'm building it to serve the Maggots/Minions, and the like minded.

I'm serious, if you want a ski related service along with the above listed items, please respond. This site is going to be built in the next month, and I want you guys to get the most out of it. Thanks

    Blurred,

Is it going to be just Ski Vids?

Organizing vids by geographic region would be cool, some sort of filing system ya know?

I don't know anything about programming but, it would be cool to acces files, by date, region, submitter's name, etc.

How are photos and vids going to be listed?

    Cool idea, good luck.

Hopefully the site will be the most comprehensive ski site you've ever visited. I want it to cover all things skiing-I.E.-weather reports, snow depths, ski history, and everything other ski sites don't have.

Actually, I haven't figured out the filing system of vids and pics yet. What would you like to see? What do you think could be improved upon when it comes to the way other ski websites organize their media? Thanks for your input Caddy. You going to be around this weekend? I'll be around Durango.

I think if you are going to organize it like you said, and what sounds like it would be pretty comprehensively, it will be amazing.

I guess You have to set up quick links to things like Ski pics and Vids and then step-down menus below that for additional subjects that fall within each category. Once again, I am totally out of touch as to how this works, but maybe a bubble diagram would help to map it out????

    Skiing
    |___Pictures
    | |_____________Action
    |_ _____Videos |
    |____Scenic

I guess a lot of it falls into site navagation, how easy it is to find what you are looking for, I suppose it's trying to figure out what the logical progression of the subjects and categories would be???

Sorry, not in D-town at the moment, a bit further south, have fun, weather's been nice there.

Allowing you to view videos/pictures by region would be pretty cool. I'd try to keep it basic though. Overcomplicating sites with strange menus and flash/java screws up sites IMHO, but I will admit I have seen some damn cool stuff done with php.

I think if you navigate through newschoolers.com, they've got it down pretty well. However, their 5mb max for vids is kind of annoying. I'd like to improve on all angles of this great site too.

yea, not a lot of graphics, simple layout, easy access to everything from one screen=awesome

Organization by username would be good, as well as a rating system people can use. Also a raw footie/edited split. And have a monthly contest or something of who can do the best 5 min. vid from the footie on the site or something.

So what are you going to call it?

I'd make sure to add a voluntary PayPal button somewhere so that folks can kick down a few bucks (if they can) for the ability to host videos. Bandwidth is expensive, and sharing the burden amongst many might help, economies of scale-wise.

I may keep raw footie to a minimum, to maximize good footage for others. What kind of contest prize would you suggest monthly? Some sort of special access to the site maybe?

Lane-I'll probably let the site flow without donations for a few months to see what kind of consumption of BW is being used. If it gets too out of hand, I may take you up on your suggestion. Thanks!

    Keep the suggestions coming!!

How about a music section - music to ski to. Bands to check out.

You bring up a very good idea. How would you like to see the page of music presented?

That could work, but I'd bet given your location, you could find some new upstart company (lsomething like Sublux in Boulder, as an example) to donate some low-level SWAG (sweatshirt, hat, etc.) that you could offer to the maker of the video that gets the most votes (like the polls we have here, maybe).

In exchange for the swag, you could put the company's logo and a link to their website on the contest page of your site. So not as far as banner ads or antyhing like that, but maybe just a small logo placement as a trade for the SWAG. The company would be stoked to get the exposure, I bet, and your winner will be stoked on their prize.

    Not sure -
Maybe album reviews, maggot playlists, trading mixes with other maggots.

I say you do a section like skiingmotion.com.....Get a comprehensive list of tricks and find the best videos you can to show em.....and no arguing over it like newschoolers

also maybe find reps for the weather/snow conditions in different areas/resorts to give the real scoop on whats goin on.....Also like a calendar of events would be cool, free concerts, and a competition section too...

this could be a sick site if you hit it right....

Thank you for your input Lane, you've got some very good ideas that I'll keep in mind. Also, it sounds like Ira is doing better.

McWop-Thanks, however the whole file sharing thing could bring the a Napster type conclusion to the site....That would be cool though.

I've talked to a certain maggot who has a SWEET trick tips part of his website, but he's ditching the website and others have bought the content. We will be working on our own version of this. Any help would be very appreciated.

I would love to have a menu in the site that could have a location/site/zipcode/ski area blank to be typed in, for a weather report/snow conditions report.....any help tech/web maggots? Thanks

Glad you like the idea. Let me pose a question to you.

Is there anything ski related that you've wondered about that you found yourself googling for extended amounts of time only to sift through a bunch of nonsense for minutes/hours on end to find what you were looking for? I want a site that is so comprehensive about skiing that you'll go there first to answer your question and/or help you find what you're looking for. Thanks, Brett

Reviews. This forum is good for them, but I like a site that simply lists skis by manufacturer and diplays all the reviews that have been added. The way mtbr.com does it is real nice.

Yeah. I want gear reviews. Have people submit them and have them categorized under the specific products. Include all the stats but instead of the ultra-useless blurbs that the companies provide, put up the best review you have read and have all the others below it. Thats one of the ways I originally stumbled onto this forum was for looking for info on gear before I took the leap.

I think without a doubt, you've touched on something lacking elsewhere. I will definitely be incorporating reviews of ski gear, etc. THank you for the line on the mtbr.com way of reviews!!
Do you think reviews on ski resorts should be included as well?

    Thank you!

OMG can you have a republican bashing forum on your website and disguise it as a skiing forum??? I think that would be soooo cool. I mean, EVERYONE wants to hear my opinion!!! I need to be heard!! I am oppressed by this tyrant Bush! OMG OMG OMG

    Bush sucks! OMG!

    OMG

Someone else got to my earlier comment faster . But I definitely think a maggot-review system of ski resorts would be great... Though places like Alta and Jackson would just top it out...

Not only would I include resort reviews, but also BC info. I would love a site that lists and reviews popular BC areas around the country. Directions and gps information about the BC places would be pretty cool too.
