I get it. As you said, you spend a lot of time in your whip and having a nice one is good for business. But try and make a good non emotional decision based primarily on the money.

If you aren’t set on a Toyota, check out a f150 with a ecoboost v6. My father went from a yota to a f150 and will never look back. He is getting 23-26 mpg. The V8s all still chug gas no matter what make. I just had a ford f150 “powerboost” for a loaner which was some hybrid thing… 19mpg was not impressive at all, plus it did all the weird electric crap like no idle or reverse was electric. I dunno. Didn’t seem worth it to me. The 1500 silverados with the duramax do seem like a killer truck and motor combo. Couple buddies have them and love them for a half ton truck.

no, it’s because there are multiple motor options for a model. There is zero room under my hood for anything on my f250. Both the 6.7 diesel and the 7.3 gas stuff the engine bay absolutely full. The smaller gas motor has space in the engine bay though. Not much but some. Not all people who have a truck can run a midsize motor, and in fact if you are running a midsize motor in a big truck, you probably don’t need a truck of that size.

Have you considered the benefits of fractional ownership?

I was referring to a Car & Driver article that showed someone standing up in an engine bay of a Ram 1500 as I recall. The point they were making was that the 1/2 ton trucks were trending (sales percentages) to smaller engines like the 2.7 EB etc but marketing retained the ‘looks more like a HD truck’ goal.

Maybe they are planning on stuffing a bunch of batteries in there soon?

I totally hear you and understand. I think it’s ridiculous to offer small motors in a body of that size. It just shouldn’t be an option due to the fact that as soon as those motors are strained by any actual weight the fuel mileage drops to absolute garbage. RAM has also worked themselves into a corner because they are the only manufacturer that doesn’t offer a 1/4 ton truck. GM, Ford and Toyota have that option. RAM would be smart to bring back that Dakota they used to make. It’s interesting how quickly ford dropped the ecodiesel out of the lineup.

on another note, the ford dealer I use was delivered 7 mach e’s and 4 lightnings, all are being bought back by ford because they can’t sell them around here.

I donna know, horses for courses. I can think of plenty of applications where a 4dr. 6' bed Ram with the V6 is a more practical choice than a Tacoma. I mean you can't have it both ways, if 95% of people don't need a truck why criticize a truck that is less of a truck.

That's pretty much what I am looking at getting for my next work truck. I don't need to haul a ton of weight, but need the truck bed and 4wd. Also would be nice to be able to fit a third employee to ride along for some jobs, which you can't get in a van w/ a bulkhead.

I am actually in the process of becoming an s-corp right now. My accountant is getting me all set up.

I did start to look at the diesel versions of the Chevy 1500s last night. Are all new versions of the Duramax complete shit though? I've heard some horror stories. My brother bought a brand new 2018 3500 Denali (or whatever the best one is) a few years ago. He tows large tractors a bunch. Was a lemon since day one. 500 on the odo and he had to pull into the dealer. Problems ever since. He finally got rid of it this year.

I do like the idea of an "in town" RE vehicle.....but I do more business up the canyon than actually in Bozeman. Gallatin Canyon is nothing cement trucks etc most of the time now. I honestly wouldn't really want to even drive a sedan in the canyon if I didn't have to. At least in the winter.

My 2014 A4 wagon was the perfect everyday car when not hauling stuff.......but the maintenance on those is obviously a huge stumbling block.

yeah RAM does not have a midized Tacoma/ Colorado/ Ranger class of truck so who knows how much that costs them ?

Ford thot they could just stop making the ranger which was a good truck ( but dated design ) and the f-150 platform would pick up the slack but obviously they realized they were leaving too much money on the table and re-introduced the new Ranger

I'm not really a fan of the small motor/ big truck i think the 3.5 in the Ford is as small as I would want to buy

OK so now I'm giving you business advice. The IRS mileage deduction is $.67 per mile for 2024. If your person owns your vehicle(s) you can be reimbursed by your S Corp at this rate.

What I do is 80% of all miles. If you drive 20k miles a year, that is a $10k deductible expense for your business paid to you as cash that you don't pay income tax on. If your actual expense in > than the $10k you are better off having your business own the whip and deduct all expenses inclusive of gas, car washes, insurance and so on.

If you are gonna go that route, get something like an HRV or a CPO Q5 and go live your life. Don't buy a 60k Tundra, put a camper on in, take in hunting and biking in the desert and then polish it up when for when you take Chad and Colleen out to lunch.

Yeah, because the insurance company won't cover the camper on the Tundra on a business policy. Ask me how I know.

Oh I know. I get rolled on my commercial policy because its really the only to insure tools, materials, equipment and so on. Hauling $20k in tile up I70 is stressful enough without thinking about the risk exposure.

Just had a chance last weekend to drive my BIL's F-150 Lightning Lariat. Damn nice rig. Handles great. The acceleration is off the hook. It's something you need to experience. He hasn't had any issues with it yet. About 8k miles on it. Doesn't haul too much in it or tow anything. Real world driving range is about 250 miles on a charge. The charging stations are a bit of a PITA, since there still aren't a lot of them out East apparently. I can definitely see the appeal in a truck like that if you aren't doing a lot of towing. He has a Ford Bronco as his everyday work rig, which he uses for HVAC jobs in NYC. I didn't ask him what he paid for it, but he said he paid about 10k over a comparably priced F-150 Lariat ICE. He's always been an early adapter on the latest tech, so not surprised he bought an EV.

^The new ones are $70-100k and the used ones are popping up starting at $50k.

You didn't mention it, but did you look at the hybrid Tundra? Toyota specs state 20 mpg city/ 24 mpg highway.

RE: owning vs leasing vs company, if you do decide to have the company own it, you will have to depreciate it. That could have ramifications when you go to sell.

Since we just drove ours into the ground, lit it on fire, and pushed it off a cliff, the fact that we had depreciated it to zero ended up being moot.

The Ecoboost is Eco or Boost. Running down I-90 at 80 MPH put me into boost on the best days; add a headwind or an incline at all and the mileage goes way down at interstate speed.

Driving 60 MPH roads, the mileage is excellent for what the vehicle is. I'm at 16ish in that scenario, maybe 17 if I'm lucky at this point, but mine is six years old and not exactly stock. Keeping it at stock height with highway tires would make a big difference but it will still drink fuel on the interstate, especially if you have a heavy right foot.

That said, I do think a crew cab, 6.5'-bed EB is one heck of an all-around pickup.

My stepdad's work truck is an F-150 EcoBoost, and although I hate it, I will admit it gets much better mileage than both our Tacoma and 4Runner.

Junior ditched the Chipped Cumins crewcab/ 8ft box which would shudder from stop sign to stop sign and tow stuff like it wasn't there for the 3.5eco boost a real nice truck but its just off warranty and he really doesnt trust it

its coming up 5 yrs for the Taco and so I may just lash out and get a Tundra ... cuz I can
