MAKE TAHOE DEEP AGAIN ~ 2016/17 OFISHUL SNOW/FOOD/WHINE & STOKE THREAD

Me'n Thudder convened today (7.2.17) for some mid-morning Ski Rose action.
"Beehive", in The Chutes, still goes top-to-bottom.
We made our first run around 10 am and the snow was soft and supple, albeit with interesting "forced" moguls and runnels; one's line ended up being a bit cherry-picky.
Thudder had to bail to tend to domestic matters and I was gonna call it a day, but I managed to score a shuttle ride back up from some Rose employees for a second go-around.
They hit "The Saddle", which, despite appearances, did not go all the way (they had to down climb in the middle choke). Me, I played it safe/cool, and re-did "Beehive". Second run at around 12:45, still skiable, just a bit softer and turns were a bit more slidey.
I also booted up the bottom 2/3 of "Hornet's Nest", which was similar to "Beehive" in terms of conditions.
Guessing that this particular chute should/might stick around for the next week, so get it soon.

Ebbetts pass opening weekend was a little burned out. Probably the last weekend you can get up there. Highland peak is bare other than the tiniest, shadiest little slots. Tryon peak bowl is the same. We skied the shady north bowls of ebbetts peak which was fun for novelty's sake. The only place looking fat are the bowls above highland lake but I don't believe the road will get you very far right now.

Tons of fun nonetheless. Unless I make it up to tioga these might be the last turns of the season.

What day were you up at Ebbetts? There was still quite a bit of floating ice there on Saturday. It sure melted off quickly.
Your first photo looks like either Hungarian Horntail Dragon Chute or Swedish Short-Snout Dragon Chute. Beautiful rock faces on the sides there.

was up the whole weekend -- camped at the upper lake up the fire road. didn't see a soul around camp all weekend. it was amazing

Edit: OH YEAH I think we ran into you guys on saturday when I arrived, I was just pulling up in my beige on beige 4runner with skis on top and bikes on back. We skied your chute, but accessed it by bootpacking up from below and cut a huge party ledge right below the tree. best one turn of the trip.

the chute I posted a photo of was really cool, we called it "dragons tongue" or something because it was this little narrow spit of snow that kept snaking further and further up the chute.

Last call for the 4th of July Chutes .. Made the trek up yesterday and I don't think they'll last much longer

Still a couple patches of snow left on the road and a handful of downed trees that the forest service still needs to clean up before they open that second gate.

Overall the skiing was actually still really nice. I skied the lookers left chute, same one as two weeks ago and the difference in snowpack is very noticeable.

I think where blue lakes road is closed you can access the nipple/lost lakes pretty well----- but getting to blue lakes is a good 4 miles on pavement, then another ~3 to deadmans, not really feasible as a day trip.

Has anybody had eyes on crescent/round top lately? Or just the Carson pass area in general? Hoping to head down Monday for some turns

There's a lot of dry hiking but continuous snow from about winnimucca lake to the ridge and sisters. Crescent coolie is looking thin but still covered. I wouldn't do it in these conditions.

Awesome, might just go poke around in that area on my day off this week. I appreciate the insight. The pics I saw of the coolie looked a little hairy which is fair since it's almost mid July.

Last Thursday (July 6) Hiram and Folger looked like this from Ebbetts Peak (the road was passable in a Subaru Outback until a mile or so beyond the campground):

I noticed how nice that looked on July 1st. It is holding up pretty well. I wonder when the road will go beyond the bridge up to the cabins.

Went up gazex to the summit on rlp yesterday and was able to ski down w 2 small portages. Gazex is worthy on its own w 15 min dry hike from pullout

What's the word on highland lakes rd?

As of yesterday evening (7/11) off the Mt. Rose Hwy:

The first ridge of Tamarack is burnt, but "Hourglass" is still looking decent, as well as spots on Houghton.

The Chutes at Mt. Rose ski area are cooked, at least from the top (if one was so inclined, one could park at the entrance to the Slide side and dry-hike in and then boot up the bottom 1/3 of the likes of "Hornet's Nest", 'Beehive", and "Yellowjacket", though.

In the Castle Peak area (as of 7/10):
There's still some long swatches lurking on the West face (overlooking the Peter Grubb Hut basin), and there's still a few decent enough swatches on the SE face (overlooking 80 and Donner Lake). Got to imagine that there's still some skiable/rideable lines on the N facing aspect (Coon Canyon) and all the way to Basin Peak.

How's the slide path off of chickadee looking? Skied real well a few weeks ago, but haven't been up the pass in ~14 days.

still holding (drove past it today on my way home from banging out the avy chutes in the hairpin just down from the Mt. Rose TH parking lot).
you can clearly see somebody's tracks up there, too.
i keep thinking about hitting it before it gets cooked.
what is the approach like (mileage/timewise)?

Yesterday (7.13.17) me'n Vets did a semi-massive late afternoon/dusk patrol ski fest out by "The Nipple". We hit some nice swatches above Lost Lakes, one above Blue Lakes, and then a back-to-the-car/truck shot just under the shade of "The Nipple". Snow was smoovy-smoove, with minimal sun-cups and a few runnels and wonky moguls in spots, but they just added character to the runs.

Highlands Lakes road clear to the lakes with only one problematic snow drift you needed 4x4 to get through yesterday, but should be completely clear in a couple of days.

Buddy of mine said that he heard that Barker Pass Road is now open to the top.

In other news, Hourglass and Broken Glass off of Tamarack skied rather nicely this morning. Hit it up with Corky, Mrs. Corky, Corky Canine, and Thudder.

Broken Glass is skiable--in a manner of speaking--all the way down to the meadow and waterfall, though you will have to navigate a pretty substantial avalanche debris field...
