3.9 earthquake this morning, centered in Truckee.
Woke me up a tad after 2 am (USGS is stating 2:09). Followed by an aftershock about 9 minutes later (I swear by my clock the first was at 2:03, the aftershock @ 2:15).
there was another rumble/shake @ about 5:15 (not sure if this was another quake or a delayed aftershock).

*by rumble/shake, I mean substantial enough to move/rattle my house.

Longshot, but anyone here want/need Yak Forklift QR fork-mount roof trays? I have two trays and one 15x100 TA adapter, would let them go at pretty low cost.

glad the quakes didn't happen mid-winter with all the roofs loaded and heavy!

regarding castle peak. the w-bound rest stop is the way to go to access those S/SE exposures. ime, you can hit them and traverse (or just climb/descent the fall-iine route) w/o dealing with a water crossing. i have also skied fall line all the way to the highway and walked back adjacent to the highway rather than deal with a more hazardous water crossing.

I park at eastern side of the lot. There are often others doing the same in the spring. I'd suck to get your car towed

I've been told (by a crazy old German lady) that it's ok to park on the shoulder of the entrance ramp from the rest stop to the freeway. We did it for an all day hike without consequence. We could have just been lucky. Please try it and report back.

My favorite hike in the area--once the snow melts--is to park on Castle Pass Rd, bushwhack towards the rest area, hitting the PCT just north of the little pond at the rest area, following the PCT to the junction with the Warren Lake Trail, following the Warren Lake trail around the NE basin of Castle and Basin peak, taking the Devil's Oven branch at the far end of the basin (which no longer seems to go to Devil's Oven Lake), follow the use trail up the ridge of Basin Peak a short distance, the following the old jeep road/trail contouring around the north and west sides of Basin Peak until it descends to join the PCT, follow the PCT S past the Grubb hut, over Castle Pass, and back to car. About 15 miles. More if you park at the PCT trailhead south of 80 and hit the PCT from there.

Lottsa decent options off of the Mt. Rose Hwy.
Althought The Chutes are pretty much cooked, there is one that still goes from top-to-bottom--while I've skied most of The Chutes, I don't ski Mt. Rose all that often, so I'm not super familiar with all of their names--the one that still goes is looker's left as you're driving up from Reno. Gonna hazard a guess that it's not gonna go all that much longer.
Tamarack is still decent looking.
Ditto for Houghton.
Across the way and back towards Incline, Chickadee Ridge still has a nice line that goes from top-to-bottom.
And there's still some lines out near Relay Peak.
And there's a few enticing looking strips lingering on Mt. Rose proper.
My buddy and I ended up skiing this short chute just below the Mt. Rose Summit TH parking lot. Snow was firm at 9:45, with sun-scales. Softened up a tad by the time we'd left around noon. Given the firm nature of the snow here, I think we made a good choice in not skiing the Mt. Rose Chutes today (they were in the shade). Thinking the cooler temps has kept the snow at that elevation firmer, so a little later start in the morning would be good.

Solid snow and good skiing on the pass yesterday. Dropped at 1045 and 1245. Good skiing with no summer caveat. Top to bottom runs. If this tour had been late April instead of June there would be no complaint. Fairly easy driving access (ravioly) to the bench and bootermcgavin from there.

Why did they close the road? Also I think the busted images is a tgr issue. I've been seeing busted images all over the forums this morning but they're working on my end now

I think where blue lakes road is closed you can access the nipple/lost lakes pretty well----- but getting to blue lakes is a good 4 miles on pavement, then another ~3 to deadmans, not really feasible as a day trip.

edit: so i'm bailing from that plan since ebbetts pass is just open!

Decided to stay close to home today because of the eventual onslaught of toolorists. Summited Hawk's Peak in my 'hood and secured 4 runs on 2 different strips and 1 patch of smooth N facing soft-serve.

For those into beta, here's what eastsides of Castle Peak and Basin Peak look like right now (picture taken facing west from the top of Hawk's Peak; Frog Lake Cliffs in the foreground). Still plenty of goodness up there...:

probably not 5-star, but definitely 3-star, in terms of ease and toolorist avoidance.
got side-tracked today and ended up doing chores around the house.
but by 6pm I felt like I'd wasted the day, so I loaded up the gear and banged out a quick--1 hour from truck to snow and back again--session on Sunrise Bowl.
For a spot that is directly east facing and considerably low in elevation (≈7500ft), and considering that I skied it at 6:30 pm today (temps were in the 80s all day), the snow was great: smooth and only mildly sun-cupped.
Have out-of-town guests the next 2 days who do not ski/ride, but now, given the ease and quickness of this shot, I'll definitely be hitting this in the early AM while they get coffee and wake-up.
