Today was epic, and I was at Northstar, yes that is right, Flatstar was actually amazing, it was some of the best tree/glade activity I have experienced for quite a while. Face shots were everywhere and it stayed light and fluffy all day.

rolled into alpine at 8:15am, was in line for third chair on summit. saw grant (3pin) in line, one chair behind me. first chair up and we both head to d chutes...can you say wind buff? winds whipping up top blowing snow straight up the chutes, untouched and waiting to be had, drop in and ski by brail for first few turns, as wind is creating a white out, big buttery turnss on the Spats, throwing massive contrails, sooo schweet...repeat twice. then peel out to palisades and lower yellow, cold smoke turns. keyhole traverse pops, up and over to the saddle, whoa, winds almost blow me off the traverse, billowing massive snow plumes over the ridges, it was an awesome site, head to high yellow - BOOYA - best run of the season, a few big turns and down to Scott - but its on wind hold - so keep going back to Summit all day.
hit Wolverine, Our Father ($$), Beaver, Palisades....by 1:45 I was cooked, vis was geting worse, winds picking up even more and it started to snow again :yourock:
Tmrw should be good: Scott was closed when I left and probably did not open today (anyone?). Upper Beaver and Estelle also off limits today. And a rumor is floating that they may pop the backside for the first time this season tomorrow....see ya'll same place same time then.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
dang - wish I could have stayed today! Sounds amazing. Git it Ta-hos!
I'm super happy others got to experience Kirkwood in Fat Thursday like conditions. It'll be one of those days you'll remember forever. And it couldn't have happened to a better person than the one who posted the above report.Quote:

I think you saw how much I like my new Thrashers... kinda gave up turning after the first few. BTW, right after turning into Three Sisters, I let loose a small slab behind me, just past where you dropped in, but that broke above me, rather than from my track... little sketchy.Quote:

Hit Motts over Lunch, timing was good, they opened around 11:45, good but not bottomless Epic Kirkwood Good.
and I thought I was being excessive with 3 laps via 9 chairlift rides....Quote:

Anyone got a first hand on Mott or Killibrew?
Damn Ja Surf, ESP! ^^^^

Not much to add except that Eagle Bowl opened about 1:00. That side of the mountain took the wind and was buffed into a 4-inch breakable slab. It was nice to ski, and of course any air was well cushioned breaking through into the deep soft snow. The cornices along the wall were big and lots of people were droping into the soft pow below, at least until the traverse lines started to establish. Saw the guy get spit out of Heart Chute from 10 Chair. Really impressive to see that snow spraying horizontally like a firehose.
Backside never did open, so should be good tomorrow.
Edit: to add picture of Elephants Back and Roundtop from 8:30 AM. The spindrift coming off the peaks was impressive, and caused significant slabs and wind deposition. Be careful in the BC. This was also the cause for some consolidated powder conditions.
All this Maggies talk makes me think high school, skiing on GS Races, and skiing countless runs of untracked even on the most crowded weekends.
Next you guys will start talking about skiing OB off Gate A of Killebrew and then cutting back into the traverse to Mott at the last possible moment ;)
Kirkwood.
WOW. Very Fat Tuesday-esque. I don't even know what to say....Just totally, totally epic.
as usual, its tough to start out w/ the desert course and today was no exception. started shaking too hard at work and hit the the heave round 2:30ish, or just enough time to make it through the mott gate for 1 lap in promised land/north 40. decent turns, but fuck me running if it wouldn't have been 1000 times better if they woulda popped that sucker yesterday. the wind has buffed and crusted most everything. still good skiing but nothing like yesterday (or this early am on powhouse). was stoked to spot a pair of bros as i was getting on the mott chair and rode up w/ vets so we hooked up for some mellow untracked goodness before i bailed off to maggies and back to work for an hour. maggies was no comparison to yesterday and pretty wind hammerred and there's a good windslab forming w/ all this recent wind. joesnow and i both commented how it was so weird yesterday to be nuking so hard w/ little to no wind, but i guess the wind was just late to the party and reared its nasty slab forming head today:nonono2: . tallac isn't sounding nearly as sweet right now and sheltered trees be where its at (shocker i know).
and they were still blasting a sweet looking closed killebrew when the mott gates closed so its still untouched and looking real sweet but prolly bitchslapped by the wind i'm sorry to say.
gimpy has it right. I was at KW today and it was absolutely bomber for throwing down cornices and chutes, but bottomless....no way. The slab effect from all the wind deposition was just overwhelming, not to mention visibility issues in the wind areas. Good knee deep in the protected zones, and compared to the rain nuking we received over the holiday, it felt great, but I've been around a while, and there has been better. I took 100 pics today, (Canon A620 on 2 shot/second) and almost nothing worth posting. Bummer.
One of these days when I ask for change, I'm going to get it. Skied with some pretty hard core guys today anyway. Nice to get pushed a bit.
Edit: picture added for wind effect (NOT complaining):
Monday, Go to work downtown. Power is off. Hang out for two hours w/ the crew. Tell them all to go out and ride, I'll hold down the shop for holiday rental returns. Sacrifice. :nonono2:
Tuesday. Go to work at 8a. Power still off. Out the door to Kirkwood 8.05a.
Arrive Kirkwood 9.30A. Ride great snow with great friends 9.30a - 4.00.
Somewhere around 2 on the afternoon, I hook up with the crew to go for the runs with a sizable posse. Plake is in the house. After a chair ride together and some personal instruction, I throw my first backflip ever.
I eat shit. Back for another round and get the biggest, loftiest backflip of the day amongst some great schralping partners.
I am so happy right now. I love snowboarding.
Amazing how a few weeks of hardships are forgotten after an epic day.
See you early tommorrow!!!!!
I know gimpy thought the Heave was beat today, but for this cubist, that 3" of crust that was banging against my shins, amidst some slightly lighter fresh made a day for me much as ridefree described it:

woaaaahhhhh splat. i didn't mean it waas beat by any means, it just wasn't nearly as light and deep as yesterday. still damn good skiing in my book and you and vets got into mott much earlier then i. my only bummness comes from the fact that the bc will be a bit sketch now w/ windslab in open areas.
Oh, gimp. You mean it was better than that? You lucky bastid.
Frankly, I was ecstatic just to be skiing again. Get some for me out there, bro.
yeah, the slab is def there.
Who will be at Kirkwood tomorrow? I should roll into the parking lot at 8:45 or so.
What a great day!
I am blissfully exhausted.
Great skiing the deep pow with Splat. We managed to find some well protected soft deep snow.
Here is one example:

More later. Also great to meet and ski with Gimpy. I also enjoyed the 179 Brototypes. More on that later too.
Cool pic Vets. :)
Protected trees is the best bet for deep snow right now...although with today’s vis I’m sure deep snow will take a back seat to more burl lines.
Today is going to be "the" day as far as visibility, wide open from the foothills to the Sierras, only one small cloud. TFBB. Stuff will go down today no doubt. So stoked to be at work!
Ps. no reports from lph, hop, or aka…was it that good yesterday? :D
BCR, "the world needs ditch digger's too Danny".
Man, this thread has taken more turns than a mountain road....glad it's ending with some good skiing to be had!
Freshies, I'm so glad you didn't delete this thread, it's definitely hall of fame material :D
*cough cough* The powdered medication was just what I needed. Tuesday was a sick sick day with lph, shoe, crack, hop, hardrider, with guest appearances by the mohican terrorist, original badboy and star of maltese flamingo, a low budget dirtbag ski-movie.Quote:

It was that good yesterday. SP and I made the drive up from my house at 2200 and pulled into lph's driveway at 0200. Up at some early-ish hour, drive to KW, and get, oh, 50th chair? Apparently it's not as epic fluffy as yesterday but it's super smooth and fast, so we do what any normal people would do in our situation and start skiing pow on the way to and from things to jump off.Quote:

I do have pics but they're mostly of driving and stuff. I couldn't quite master the ski pics thing yet. lph has some video.
Edit for Shirk: SuPu was really convincing on the phone when he called in sick. I even heard him coughing outside the car! Hopefully those avy bombs going off in the background were drowned out by his sick performance. ;)

Wow Kirkwood sounds like it has been sick.
Late report from Monday but......
I wanted to throw props out to Lego and Divegirl, for their Sunday Sugarbowl recommendation. We went there on Monday, and it was a great storm day. It was my first powder day of the season and it was pretty awesome (a good foot plus of wet snow, entire mountain open, and just dumping).
Good to see Pu still knows how to fake a sick day.
One of the saddeest moments ever was getting in my car - in my work clothes - and leaving lph's driveway yesterday morning as everyone else is hooting and hollering and heading to Kwood for a day of fun. Very, very sad :(.
But so glad you guys got the goods after hauling ass in the middle of the night. Hilarious to wake up and see Hop and Pu out in the game room up and ready to go after just a couple hours of sleep.
Did you guys leave any for the rest of us for this weekend??
Hey! Look who's alive!
Sick and ashamed and happy (and nothing more to say at this moment),
d.
Thanks for the report hop!
Way to get after it!!! :yourock:
Ahhhhh yeah, redemption day. For Tahoe and myself.
Me and my buds made the super duper ultra secret non-KT early morning call and got first chair and lapped Granite Chief 3 friggin times before the masses made their way over to the back bowls of Squaw Valley. It was friggin amazing. It was a private ski area for about 1 hour. Not more than 20 people on GC for the first 3 laps. Insano.
Also, the air I got absolutely played on (30 feet to dry rock) last year I got redeemed on today. No turn for the camera, no pretty spray, just point and stomp. Felt good, especially with the images of last years splat still on my mind.
YES!!! Good job man! Love that shit.Quote:
